How Automotive Companies Test Connected-Car Infotainment and Dashboards

Automakers validate connected infotainment and dashboards in layers rather than with one final road test. They define expected behavior and safety requirements, exercise software in simulation, connect production-like electronic control units (ECUs) on hardware-in-the-loop benches, measure driver interaction in usability labs, probe cybersecurity, and then drive instrumented vehicles on proving grounds and public roads. Fleet monitoring after launch closes the loop on failures that controlled tests cannot reproduce.

This combination matters because a screen can render correctly in a laboratory yet fail when a cellular network disappears in a tunnel, a phone reconnects during an over-the-air update, or a driver must interpret an alert while moving. Each test layer supplies evidence the others cannot.

What connected-car infotainment validation covers

The system under test is larger than the center display. It includes the head unit, instrument cluster, touch and physical controls, microphones and speakers, voice assistant, navigation, media services, smartphone projection, telematics modem, Wi-Fi and Bluetooth links, and the vehicle networks that exchange data with other ECUs. Testers also verify that settings and user data persist correctly across sleep, wake, ignition cycles, profile changes and software updates.

ITU-T H.552 (2024) describes performance-testing scenarios for vehicle multimedia connectivity, HMI and voice-assistant interaction, media control, smartphone integration, and WLAN/WPAN behavior. In practice, teams turn those capabilities into measurable requirements: a boot sequence must reach a defined state, a steering-wheel button must invoke the intended function, a spoken destination must be understood or rejected clearly, and a lost connection must produce a safe, comprehensible result.

The layered test stack

A mature program assigns each question to the environment that can answer it most reliably. Simulation provides breadth and repeatability; benches expose integration faults; human studies reveal comprehension and workload; tracks and roads reveal environmental and network behavior.

Layer Primary question Typical evidence
Requirements and scenarios What should happen in normal, boundary, fault and attack conditions? Traceable requirements, scenario catalogs and safety or security cases
Virtual and software testing Does software behave correctly across many modeled conditions? Automated test results, logs and repeatable regressions
Software-in-the-loop and hardware-in-the-loop Does production-like code interact correctly with ECU hardware and vehicle signals? Network traces, timing measurements, fault-injection results and failsafe behavior
HMI laboratories and simulators Can drivers understand and operate the system without unsafe distraction? Glance behavior, reaction time, task success, workload and standardized usability metrics
Proving grounds Does the integrated vehicle work repeatedly under controlled motion, terrain and weather? Telemetry, coverage maps, update logs and correlation with simulation
Public-road fleets Does it survive real networks, devices, drivers and long-tail conditions? Field logs, incident reports, beta feedback and in-service monitoring

1. Requirements become scenarios before a vehicle exists

Engineers first identify use cases and convert them into scenarios with observable pass criteria. A normal case might be pairing a phone, selecting a route and receiving spoken guidance. Boundary cases include a weak signal, a full storage partition, a nearly empty vehicle battery or a sensor that reports degraded quality. Fault cases include an ECU restart, a corrupted map package, a microphone failure or an interrupted update. Attack cases cover unauthorized access, malformed messages and attempts to move from the infotainment domain into safety-relevant networks.

UNECE validation guidance organizes this work around scenario catalogs, virtual testing, track testing, real-world testing, audits and in-service monitoring. The catalog is a living artifact: a field failure or a software change adds or revises scenarios, and each requirement remains linked to test evidence. Mode transitions receive special attention because many defects occur when the system changes from online to offline, from a user profile to guest mode, or from an update-ready state to a recovery state.

2. Virtual testing and software-in-the-loop

Digital prototypes let teams run large numbers of combinations before production hardware is available. Simulators can vary vehicle speed, position, network latency, packet loss, satellite visibility, sensor quality, user actions and ECU responses while capturing every signal. Mercedes-Benz describes digital prototypes that test many driving situations before a real vehicle exists.

Software-in-the-loop (SIL) executes the intended software against modeled ECUs, vehicle networks and services. It is efficient for regression testing: the same route, phone behavior or update interruption can be replayed after every code change. SIL is especially useful for checking state machines, data validation, timing, localization, error messages and recovery paths. It cannot prove that a physical processor, bus transceiver, display panel or radio behaves identically, so passing SIL is an early gate rather than a release decision.

3. Hardware-in-the-loop exposes integration faults

In hardware-in-the-loop (HIL), production-representative ECUs and infotainment hardware communicate with real-time simulators that generate vehicle signals and network traffic. The bench can imitate ignition cycles, wheel speeds, steering inputs, battery voltage, sensor messages, cellular conditions and neighboring ECU behavior while engineers observe the device under test.

HIL makes timing and interface defects visible: a message may arrive late, a watchdog may fail to reset a process, or a display may show stale vehicle data after a network partition. Testers deliberately inject missing, duplicated, delayed or out-of-range messages, then verify diagnostic logging, graceful degradation and recovery. Connected-vehicle methodologies also include overstress tests, in which traffic or requests are increased to find capacity limits, and failsafe tests that verify the system reaches a defined safe state.

The SAE connected-vehicle study cautions that laboratory tests cannot represent weather, tunnels, basement topography or mountainous terrain completely. HIL therefore complements rather than replaces vehicle-level testing. Its strength is repeatability and precise fault control; its limitation is that the surrounding physical world is modeled.

4. HMI labs measure whether drivers can use the system safely

Conformance reviews compare layouts, alerts, terminology and interaction sequences with applicable regulations, internal rules and human-factors best practices. Usability studies then test representative drivers performing realistic tasks. Researchers measure task completion, errors, time, glances away from the road, reaction to alerts, subjective workload and comprehension. A peer-reviewed BMW procedure combines use-case identification, heuristic assessment and empirical studies with standardized metrics.

Static usability sessions

Participants can evaluate menus, touch targets, voice prompts and physical controls while seated in a representative cabin. Moderators record whether users find a function, interpret an icon correctly and recover from an error without coaching. These sessions are inexpensive compared with road work and are useful for comparing design alternatives before software is frozen.

Driving simulators

Moving-base simulators add steering, motion cues and a controlled driving scene. BMW reports a Munich facility of 11,400 m² containing 14 simulators and usability labs. Mercedes-Benz describes a 360-degree moving-base simulator on a 12-metre rail that measures driver reactions. Such systems can repeat an identical traffic event while collecting glance and response data, without exposing participants to road hazards.

Simulator results still require interpretation: motion fidelity, display size, participant expectations and adaptation can differ from a customer vehicle. Designers use the findings to identify risky sequences, then confirm critical behavior in instrumented cars.

5. Connectivity is tested as a changing system

Connectivity testing covers cellular registration, provider changes, Wi-Fi and Bluetooth pairing, smartphone projection, backend handshakes, navigation data, media streaming and telematics messages. Engineers vary signal strength, latency, packet loss, roaming, authentication failures and service restarts. They verify what the driver sees, what data is retained, how long retries continue and whether the system returns to normal without a manual reset.

Environmental routes are essential. A vehicle may leave coverage in a tunnel, enter a basement, cross a national border, travel through mountainous terrain or encounter a congested cell. The test records radio conditions and vehicle location alongside UI events, so teams can distinguish a network problem from an ECU, antenna, software or backend defect. The expected result is not always uninterrupted service; it may be an honest offline indication, cached navigation, queued messages and a clean recovery when coverage returns.

6. Cybersecurity testing reaches beyond the screen

Security work begins with an ISO/SAE 21434-style risk analysis: identify assets, trust boundaries, attack paths and potential impact, then derive requirements and controls. Functional security checks verify authentication, authorization, secure boot, key handling, update verification, logging and isolation between infotainment and safety-relevant domains.

Penetration testers then attempt abuse through diagnostic ports, wireless interfaces, paired phones, media files, backend APIs and malformed vehicle-network messages. Operating-system hardening, privilege separation, memory protections and patch behavior are assessed separately from application features. IEEE 3130-2024 defines security requirements and test methods for connected-vehicle operating systems.

IAMTS reports that original-equipment manufacturers commonly test at ECU level, while full-vehicle and infotainment/telematics targets are less common. That distinction matters: an ECU can pass isolated checks while an unexpected route through a gateway, modem or service account remains exploitable. A complete program therefore combines component evidence with vehicle-level threat scenarios, regression tests after fixes and monitoring for newly observed attack patterns.

7. Over-the-air updates are tested as safety-critical workflows

An OTA campaign is validated from eligibility through recovery, not merely for download speed. Before installation, the vehicle must determine whether it is in a safe state, confirm sufficient energy and storage, authenticate the package and obtain clear user permission where required. During installation, testers interrupt power, connectivity and user interaction at controlled points. Afterward, they verify version reporting, restored settings, diagnostics, rollback or recovery behavior and the absence of unintended actuation.

ISO/TS 20003:2026 specifies OTA-HMI concerns including safe vehicle state, update success and failure, alerts, low-battery handling, prevention of inadvertent actuation, and clear user permission and results. Test cases include a driver declining an update, an update postponed repeatedly, a battery falling below the allowed level, a package that fails verification, and a vehicle that loses network service midway. The user-facing message must explain what happened and what action is safe; a cryptic error can turn a technically contained failure into a support and safety problem.

8. Proving grounds connect repeatability with physical reality

Tracks let engineers repeat a route, speed profile, traffic pattern or weather condition while instrumenting every subsystem. They can compare radio logs, ECU messages, display events and driver actions with predictions from simulation. Controlled repetition is valuable for fixing a defect because a team can rerun the same sequence after a software change.

Mercedes-Benz’s Immendingen Test and Technology Center has more than 30 test modules across 86 km of roads, according to its 2025 description. Its digital twin supports preliminary simulations and test-bench load spectra before track work. A proving ground can include urban layouts, grades, tunnels, rough surfaces and high-speed sections, but it still cannot represent the full diversity of public networks, devices and driver behavior.

9. Public-road fleets find long-tail failures

Instrumented fleet vehicles expose combinations that laboratories did not predict: a particular phone firmware, a regional carrier, a crowded Wi-Fi channel, unusual map data, extreme temperature or a driver who follows an unexpected sequence. Telemetry is collected with privacy controls, and incidents are correlated with software versions, vehicle configuration, location and network conditions.

BMW Group Labs, for example, lets BMW and Mini drivers test beta services and provide feedback; services may later be deployed to participating cars. Beta programs are not a substitute for safety validation. They are a controlled way to observe usability, compatibility and service reliability at scale, with rollback and issue-triage processes prepared before wider release.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

10. Release gates and in-service monitoring

At release, teams assemble traceability from requirement to test result, unresolved defect, risk acceptance and software version. Safety cases, cybersecurity evidence, OTA approval, regression results and regional configuration checks are reviewed together. A change to a voice engine can affect privacy, network traffic, HMI timing and driver workload, so the impact analysis determines which earlier tests must be rerun.

After launch, monitoring continues for crashes, failed updates, abnormal resets, connectivity gaps, security alerts and customer-reported confusion. UNECE’s framework includes in-service monitoring and reporting. A disciplined response preserves logs, reproduces the condition in simulation or HIL where possible, tests the fix across affected variants, and stages deployment with the ability to stop or roll back.

How Apple CarPlay, Android Auto and phone features are checked

Smartphone integration is tested as a matrix rather than a single “works” check. Engineers vary supported phone models, operating-system versions, cables and wireless modes, account states, permissions, battery levels and simultaneous Bluetooth or Wi-Fi activity. They exercise pairing, reconnection after sleep, calls interrupting navigation, media handoff, voice commands, map guidance, notification suppression and loss of the phone connection.

The vehicle side is measured for boot time, screen transitions, audio routing, steering-wheel controls, message clarity and safe fallback to native functions. Tests are repeated with no cellular service and with the phone connected but unable to reach its cloud service. A pass requires an intelligible state and recovery path, not merely a successful initial pairing.

Choosing the right method for a test question

Approach Best at Important limitation
Simulation/SIL Broad scenario coverage, automation and exact regression replay Physical hardware, radio propagation and human behavior are modeled
HIL ECU timing, network integration, fault injection and failsafe logic Vehicle motion, weather and real coverage remain approximations
Usability lab Comprehension, workload, glance behavior and design comparison Participants and simulator context may differ from ownership
Proving ground Repeatable vehicle-level behavior under controlled terrain and routes Expensive and less representative of every public network and device
Public-road fleet Environmental diversity, compatibility and long-tail reliability Less repeatable; safety, privacy and staged rollout controls are required
Security assessment Attack paths, OS hardening, authentication and update integrity Findings depend on scope; isolated ECU testing can miss vehicle-level paths

Typical failure modes and the evidence that fixes them

  • Black screen or slow boot: correlate power-state transitions, watchdog logs, storage health and network initialization in SIL, HIL and a cold-start vehicle test.
  • Phone disconnects after sleep: reproduce the exact phone, operating-system version, wireless mode and timing; inspect Bluetooth and Wi-Fi handshakes before changing the HMI.
  • Navigation becomes unusable offline: test cache age, map-storage limits, location confidence and the wording of offline prompts on routes with known coverage gaps.
  • Update stops at low battery: verify eligibility checks, warning timing, user consent, safe interruption and recovery without changing vehicle state unexpectedly.
  • Alerts overwhelm the driver: use simulator and road studies to measure glance demand and prioritization, then retest after changes to wording, sound and timing.
  • Security defect appears after integration: map the message route across gateways and services, repeat penetration tests at ECU and full-vehicle scope, and add the exploit path to regression scenarios.

What a credible validation program looks like

A credible program can show traceability from a customer-visible function to requirements, modeled scenarios, bench evidence, human-factors measurements, vehicle tests and post-launch monitoring. It reports the conditions behind each result: software and hardware versions, phone and carrier, geography, weather, battery state, network quality and whether the test was simulated, controlled or observed in service.

No single layer proves that a connected dashboard is safe and dependable. Simulation supplies scale, HIL supplies controlled integration faults, usability work supplies evidence about human understanding, cybersecurity testing supplies resistance to attack, and track and fleet work supplies environmental realism. The release decision is strongest when those results agree and when the manufacturer has a monitored, reversible plan for problems discovered after customers receive the software.
