Bennu is a rubble-pile asteroid assembled from fragments of a much larger, water-altered parent body. Its ingredients date to the early solar system, nearly 4.6 billion years ago, but Bennu itself came together much later, roughly 1 to 2 billion years ago. Returned samples have clarified that history; they have not solved every detail, including why Bennu has its distinctive spinning-top shape.
How did asteroid Bennu form?
Bennu’s story has several stages, and the age of its material is not the same as the age of the asteroid. NASA says the rocks that make up Bennu formed nearly 4.6 billion years ago on an ancient world that no longer exists. Much later, fragments of that larger body gathered into the roughly 500-meter-wide asteroid we see today. NASA estimates Bennu coalesced from leftover rubble about 1 to 2 billion years ago. NASA’s Bennu facts and a 2025 Nature Astronomy study of material accreted by Bennu’s parent asteroid describe these different milestones.

- Ancient ingredients: Dust and other material formed in the early solar system, including grains that predate it.
- Accumulation and alteration: A parent body gathered ice and dust. As the ice melted, liquid water reacted with the dust and formed new minerals.
- Breakup: A collision in the main asteroid belt shattered the parent body.
- Reassembly: Fragments from the disrupted body later came together as Bennu, a loosely bound rubble pile.
What did the Bennu samples reveal?
Spacecraft observations can map an asteroid’s surface and measure properties remotely; laboratory work on returned material can identify components and examine their signatures directly. NASA’s OSIRIS-REx spacecraft surveyed Bennu from 2018 to 2021, collected a sample in 2020, and delivered 121.6 grams to Earth on September 24, 2023. NASA announced the total mass in February 2024. The OSIRIS-REx mission timeline records the mission milestones.
A mixture of materials with different origins
Analysis found a variety of ingredients: presolar grains that existed before the Sun formed, organic matter likely formed in interstellar space, and minerals that formed closer to the Sun. In NASA’s account of the sample findings, planetary scientist Ann Nguyen said: “We traced the origins of these initial materials accumulated by Bennu’s ancestor. We found stardust grains with compositions that predate the solar system, organic matter that likely formed in interstellar space, and high temperature minerals that formed closer to the Sun.” These findings show that the parent body accumulated material with diverse histories; they do not identify one exact birthplace for it. NASA’s sample analysis summary describes the results.

Evidence of extensive water-driven change
The parent body did not remain an unchanged pile of primordial dust. NASA researcher Tom Zega described it as having accumulated ice and dust; after the ice melted, the liquid water reacted with the dust and produced minerals now found in the sample. In NASA’s account, Zega characterized the sample as “80% minerals that contain water.” That figure is his quoted description, not a separate measurement presented here. The broad conclusion is that water altered much of the parent body’s material before the collision that broke it apart.
More recent findings broaden the picture
In an update published December 2, 2025, NASA reported ribose and glucose in Bennu’s returned sample. The same update said an analysis of presolar grains found six times the amount of supernova dust observed in other studied astromaterials. These discoveries add detail about the material Bennu inherited, but neither establishes the precise location where its parent body formed. NASA’s December 2025 update reports both results.

What is solved—and what is still uncertain?
The evidence supports a coherent broad history: early-solar-system ingredients accumulated in a parent body, water altered much of its material, a collision disrupted it, and the debris eventually reassembled as Bennu. Scientists have not settled the exact location of the parent body or every step in Bennu’s evolution. NASA also says the origin of Bennu’s spinning-top shape is not fully understood. Its facts page notes that organic matter can form without life, so the detection of organic compounds is not evidence that Bennu hosted life. NASA’s Bennu facts page discusses these limitations.
