Salt Lake Stadium—officially Vivekananda Yuba Bharati Krirangan (VYBK)—is Kolkata’s landmark football ground, in Bidhannagar, West Bengal. Its story is written in two very different crowd figures: FIFA reports a 131,000-attendance Kolkata Derby in 1997, before the 2011 renovation, while a West Bengal government plan lists the modern venue’s capacity as 85,000.
Where Salt Lake Stadium is and what it is called
Vivekananda Yuba Bharati Krirangan is the stadium’s full name; VYBK is its common abbreviation, and Salt Lake Stadium is the name most widely used. The West Bengal disaster-management plan places it in Bidhannagar, Kolkata, on the city’s eastern metropolitan bypass. Why capacity figures vary
There is no single figure that describes every era and event configuration. The 85,000 figure in the West Bengal government plan is the venue’s general listed capacity. FIFA’s 2016 profile gives 66,600 for the stadium’s configuration for the 2017 FIFA U-17 World Cup, an event-specific figure. These modern figures should not be confused with the larger pre-renovation seating capacity or historic attendance.

The renovation installed bucket seats and reduced capacity from well over 100,000 to around 80,000, according to the state plan, which lists the venue at 85,000. The record crowd and today’s listed capacity are therefore not competing estimates of the same configuration: one is a reported historic attendance; the other is a modern capacity listing. A multipurpose stadium built for large events
The government plan describes three tiers of concrete galleries and roofing made from metal tubes, aluminium sheets and concrete. Its main football arena measures 105 by 70 metres and is surrounded by a synthetic athletics track, reflecting the ground’s use beyond football. From Kolkata Derby nights to a World Cup final
VYBK was inaugurated in January 1984 with the Jawaharlal Nehru International Gold Cup tournament. FIFA’s stadium profile records later events including the 1985 Pre-World Cup Tournament, Super-Soccers in 1986, 1989, 1991 and 1994, the 1987 South Asian Federation Games, the 1988 USSR Festival, the 1992 Charminar Challenger Trophy and the 1995 Jawaharlal Nehru International Gold Cup. The ground is especially associated with the Kolkata Derby between Mohun Bagan and East Bengal. FIFA identifies the rivalry as central to the stadium’s reputation, and its later venue article notes that VYBK hosted the final of the FIFA U-17 World Cup India 2017. The Indian Super League venue listing puts Salt Lake Stadium Metro Station approximately 1.5 km from the ground, Sealdah Railway Station 6 km away and Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose International Airport 13 km away.
