The report says an ultrasound and CT scan showed severe intestinal obstruction, and endoscopy confirmed a large accumulation of hair in her stomach and small intestine. Doctors reportedly removed around one kilogram of hair.

Onmanorama’s same-day report likewise described the removal of a one-kilogram hair mass and said she was discharged in good health. It identified the treatment as led by Dr Biju IG Nair, senior consultant in paediatric surgery at NIMS Medicity. Hair is difficult for the body to digest. Strands can become tangled and collect in the stomach, forming a mass. News coverage attributed a general explanation involving repeated hair pulling and swallowing to Dr Nair, but it does not establish that this was the child’s behavior or explain how the mass formed in her case. How can doctors identify a hair mass?
In the Kerala reports, ultrasound and CT were used to identify obstruction, and endoscopy confirmed hair accumulation. Medical literature describes ultrasound and CT findings that can help identify a trichobezoar. Endoscopy can show a hair mass in the stomach, but it may not establish on its own whether the mass extends into the intestine; imaging and, where relevant, operative findings can help determine its extent. The scans and endoscopy described in the news coverage are details of this reported case, not a complete medical record.
