There is no single setting or image filter that can guarantee your art will not be collected or used to train AI. A practical approach combines limiting what you publish, expressing a machine-readable preference where supported, and—if you choose—using tools designed to make style imitation harder. Each layer has limits: it works only when a site, service, or model operator recognizes and respects it, and legal options depend on where you are and the facts.
Choose which kind of protection you need
“Protect my art” can mean reducing access to image files, communicating that you do not permit training, making style extraction less useful, or seeking a legal remedy after misuse. Those goals require different measures. None of the technical options below makes an image universally undiscoverable or impossible to train on.

Reduce the amount of art available to scrape
Decide which pieces to publish publicly, at what resolution, and on which sites. A portfolio can show selected work rather than every finished piece or the largest production file. Limiting exposure may reduce opportunities for collection, but it also reduces how easily clients and audiences can view or share your work.

Website operators can use crawler controls, and platforms can restrict scraping through contract terms. These measures depend on the operator’s choices and developers’ compliance; a control or prohibition does not itself prevent every party from accessing or using an image. Attach a machine-readable preference where supported
The Coalition for Content Provenance and Authenticity (C2PA) specification describes a Training and Data Mining assertion that can be included in an asset’s manifest. It can indicate preferences for data mining, general AI training, and generative AI training. The specification explains: “A C2PA Manifest include a Training and Data Mining assertion that can be used to indicate that the asset should not be used for either training or data mining purposes.” See the C2PA Explainer, specification 1.3.
This is a way to communicate a preference, not a universal block. The preference matters only to systems that read and honor it; it does not remove copies already made or establish that every AI developer is bound by it.

Adobe Content Credentials preference
Adobe documents a preference embedded through Content Credentials that is currently supported by Adobe Firefly and Spawning. Adobe says you need a verified name or at least one connected social media account to select it. Enabling the preference also prevents Adobe Stock upload and blocks use in Firefly features including Style Reference, Structure Reference, and Generate Similar. Check Adobe’s current instructions for preventing AI training before changing your workflow, since recognized services and product behavior can change.

Consider image-protection tools for style mimicry
The University of Chicago’s Glaze project applies subtle changes intended to leave an image looking similar to people while making it appear to AI models to represent a different style. The project cautions: “Glaze is not a panacea, but a necessary first step towards artist-centric protection tools to resist AI mimicry.” It also says alterations may be more visible on flat colors and smooth backgrounds, and that future techniques could overcome the protection. The UK government report also discusses Glaze and Nightshade as tools that alter training signals or disrupt style extraction. Their purpose is not the same as hiding an image from a crawler, and the cited evidence does not establish that either tool makes training impossible. Consider the potential effect on image appearance and your production workflow before applying one to work you publish.

Copyright and AI-training policy are active areas of debate, not one settled global rule. In the United States, the Copyright Office’s Part 3 report addresses generative AI training; its overview says a pre-publication version was released May 9, 2025 and that a final version will be published in the future. The Office also says its August 2023 notice of inquiry received over 10,000 comments by December 2023. In the United Kingdom, the government says a broad copyright exception with an opt-out is no longer its preferred approach; it plans to gather more evidence and consider other policy approaches. See the UK government’s copyright and AI policy update. Applicable rights, exceptions, and remedies vary by jurisdiction and by the details of the use. A preference embedded in an image should not be treated as universally binding legal notice.

Build a layered approach around your priorities
- Choose your exposure level. Publish selectively and consider whether each site needs a full-resolution file or every work in your archive.
- Set an explicit preference where available. Review the service’s current support and workflow trade-offs before embedding a machine-readable preference.
- Evaluate protective image processing selectively. Test its visual impact on copies intended for publication, especially images with smooth backgrounds or flat colors.
- Keep useful records. Preserve originals and documentation that helps you identify your own work and its publication history.
- For a specific suspected misuse, get local advice. The relevant rights and possible response depend on the location, work, and use involved.
