Neither is automatically the better buy. A phone with longer software support can be better value if you will keep using it through those extra supported years and its price premium is less than the cost of replacing a cheaper phone sooner. A cheaper phone can win if you expect to replace it earlier and its remaining support is enough for your needs.
Compare the exact models’ remaining security and operating-system update windows, the net prices you would actually pay, and how long you expect to keep each phone. Support matters only while the hardware remains useful.

How to compare the value of two phones
Start with the models you are actually considering, not a brand’s best-known support promise. For each phone, find the manufacturer’s official support terms, note when that support period began, and calculate how much remains on the day you plan to buy it.

Confirm the device name and the version sold in your market. Support terms and update delivery can vary by model, region, and carrier.
- Separate security updates from OS upgrades. A security-update promise does not automatically mean the phone will receive the same number of major operating-system upgrades.
- Calculate remaining support. Use the manufacturer’s stated start date, not simply the date you buy the phone. This is especially important for used, discounted, or older inventory.
- Compare net prices. Subtract only discounts and trade-in values you can actually claim from the prices you would pay.
- Set your ownership horizon. Estimate how long you realistically expect to use the phone. Support years after your likely replacement date may have little value to you.
- Check practical longevity. Consider battery condition and replacement cost, repair access, performance, storage, and likely resale value.
A rough starting calculation is net phone price ÷ years you expect to use it. This is not total cost of ownership: it leaves out repairs, battery replacement, resale, financing, and the value of features. If the cheaper phone might need replacement sooner because its support ends, compare a second scenario that includes the cost of that replacement.

What current Google and Samsung policies say
Google Pixel: check the model and support start date
Google’s support page says Pixel 8 and later receive seven years of OS and security updates, counted from when each model first became available on the Google Store in the US. It lists five years for the Pixel 6 and Pixel 7 families and Pixel Fold. Check the named model and relevant market in Google’s Pixel update policy rather than applying the longest period to every Pixel.
Google says updates roll out gradually and delivery can depend on the carrier and device, taking a few weeks. Its October 4, 2023 announcement said Pixel 8 and Pixel 8 Pro would receive seven years of Android OS upgrades, security updates, and Feature Drops, with hardware support and parts availability aligned to that commitment. Samsung Galaxy: verify the security schedule and OS promise separately
Samsung says Galaxy security-update support can extend up to seven years. Its security scope page lists devices on monthly or quarterly schedules and says availability and timing vary by market, network provider, and model. Confirm that the exact phone appears on the page and note its cadence.
The security page is not, by itself, a promise of a matching number of major Android upgrades. Samsung’s 2022 announcement described four One UI upgrades and up to five years of security updates for select eligible models at that time; it is historical policy for those devices, not a universal rule for current Galaxy phones. Why a nominal support period can mislead
- Some of the window may already have elapsed. A discounted older phone may have fewer supported years left than a new model with the same advertised duration. Google, for example, counts the Pixel 8-and-later period from first US Google Store availability.
- Update types are different. Security patches help address vulnerabilities; OS upgrades bring newer Android versions. Check both commitments where they matter to you.
- Delivery is not necessarily simultaneous. Google notes gradual rollouts and possible carrier- or device-related timing differences; Samsung notes variation by market, provider, and model.
- Supported hardware can still become inconvenient. A long update window cannot compensate for a battery that no longer lasts through your day, poor repair economics, inadequate performance, or insufficient storage.
When each option is likely to be better value
Choose the longer-supported phone when
- You expect to keep it long enough to use much of the additional support period.
- The extra amount you pay is reasonable compared with the cost of replacing the cheaper phone earlier.
- The device also meets your needs for performance, battery life, storage, and repairability.
Choose the cheaper phone when
- You expect to replace it before the longer-support model’s extra years would matter.
- Its remaining security support is adequate for your intended use and ownership period.
- The savings are meaningful after comparing net prices, and the phone’s hardware suits your needs.
There is no current, universal price premium for each extra year of phone support. The answer depends on the two models, the prices available to you, and how long you will use them; without that information, naming one as the better-value choice would be misleading.

The Federal Trade Commission’s February 2018 report, Mobile Security Updates: Understanding the Issues, found average support of 1.3 years for sampled phones priced below $250, 1.4 years for phones priced $250–$500, and 1.9 years for phones priced above $500. Those are historical averages for the report’s sample, not estimates for phones sold in 2026 or predictions for a particular model. The FTC also found a broad spread within each price band, so price was not a reliable stand-in for support duration. FTC report.
