Arizona Interscholastic Association (AIA) football is organized into conferences from 1A through 6A, with an additional Open Division for the strongest 5A and 6A teams. A school’s initial conference is based on enrollment, but football performance can move it up or down under AIA rules. Playoff qualification then depends on the conference: some fields are filled entirely by the AIA ranking, while others reserve places for region champions or crossover winners.

The 2025 State Football Administrator/Coach Tournament Guide sets the bracket sizes and qualification rules described here. AIA has also published active conference and region alignment for 2026–2028, so always check the alignment for the season you are following before relying on a school’s region or conference.

How AIA creates football conferences

Enrollment is the starting point

AIA bylaws initially divide schools by enrollment. For schools with enrollment at or below 1,000 students, 1A is the smallest-enrollment band, 2A is the next band and 3A is the largest band in that group. For schools at or above 1,000 students, 4A is the smallest band, 5A is the middle band and 6A is the largest band.

That structure means the number in a conference name is primarily an enrollment classification, not a direct rating of a team’s quality. A smaller school can be highly competitive in its conference, and a large school can struggle in 6A. The classification establishes the normal competitive pool before the football-specific movement rules are applied.

Performance can change a school’s conference

Football placement starts with the school’s prior conference. Except for 1A, AIA uses multi-year average MaxPreps rankings and standard-deviation thresholds to determine whether a school should move up or down one conference. The intent is to keep unusually strong or weak programs from remaining indefinitely in a classification that does not reflect their sustained football performance.

This is a conference-placement rule, not a weekly playoff-seeding rule. A school can be moved for a future alignment period, while its playoff seed during a particular season is determined by that season’s qualification and ranking procedures.

Alignment is season-specific

Region membership can change when AIA publishes a new alignment cycle. The current AIA alignment publication lists conferences and regions for 2026–2028. Use that publication to verify which schools are grouped together; do not assume that a region from an older season still has the same membership.

What the Open Division is—and how it changes 6A

Open is an additional tournament

The Open Division is a three-round, single-elimination tournament for the top eight teams drawn from the 5A and 6A conferences. The selection uses the overall AIA rankings powered by MaxPreps, with conference multipliers included in the Open selection formula. Open is therefore not a ninth enrollment conference. It is an elite bracket layered over the 5A–6A structure.

Open selection removes teams from the 6A field

The Open qualifiers do not simply play an extra tournament while remaining in an unchanged 6A bracket. After Open qualifiers are removed, the 6A field is rebuilt. Four teams return from Open—those that lose in the Open first round—and they join teams ranked Nos. 13 through 20 in the relevant AIA ranking. That produces the 12-team 6A playoff field described in the 2025 guide.

In practical terms, a 6A team can be good enough to reach Open but still have a route back into the 6A tournament if it loses its Open opener. The Open bracket therefore affects who is available for 6A and how the first 6A round is arranged.

Arizona football playoff fields by conference

The following figures come from the AIA 2025 State Football Administrator/Coach Tournament Guide. Bracket formats and qualification rules can be revised for a later season.

Conference or division Field size How teams qualify Seeding and byes Rounds Minimum regular-season games
Open 8 teams Top eight teams from 5A–6A using AIA rankings with conference multipliers Open bracket is selected from the ranking; no conference-region automatic berths are specified 3 single-elimination rounds Not separately stated in the guide summary
6A 12 teams Four Open first-round losers plus teams ranked Nos. 13–20 after Open qualifiers are removed Teams ranked 13–20 play the opening 6A round; winners meet Open first-round losers. The field is re-seeded after that round using individual ranking and first-round results Single elimination; opening round followed by quarterfinal path 8 games
5A 24 teams Teams ranked Nos. 1–24 in the overall AIA ranking Top eight receive first-round byes; remaining games follow the overall ranking 5 single-elimination rounds 8 games
4A 24 teams Teams ranked Nos. 1–24 in the overall AIA ranking Top eight receive first-round byes; remaining games follow the overall ranking 5 single-elimination rounds 8 games
3A 16 teams Each region winner receives an automatic berth; remaining places are filled from the overall top 16 All qualifiers are ordered by the overall AIA ranking after automatic berths are accounted for 4 rounds 8 games
2A 24 teams Five Week 10 crossover winners receive automatic bids; remaining places are filled from the ranking After crossover games, the top eight ranked teams receive byes; the rest of the field is filled from the ranking 5 rounds 8 games
1A 12 teams Each region’s top team receives an automatic berth; remaining places come from the AIA ranking Top four receive first-round byes; the field is seeded by ranking 4 rounds 6 games

5A and 4A: ranking determines a 24-team field

In both 5A and 4A, the 24 highest teams in the overall AIA ranking advance to the state tournament. The top eight receive first-round byes, while the other 16 teams play in the opening round. The tournament has five single-elimination rounds, and a school must have played at least eight regular-season games to qualify under the 2025 guide.

The AIA guide describes the rule this way: “Based on the overall AIA rankings powered by MaxPreps, the top 24 teams will advance to the state tournament with the top eight (8) teams receiving a first-round bye.”

3A: region champions are guaranteed entry

Each 3A region’s top team in the standings receives an automatic berth. The AIA guide states: “The top team in each region based on standings will receive an automatic berth to the state tournament bracket.” After those automatic places are secured, the remaining positions are filled from the overall top 16, and the complete 16-team bracket is seeded by the overall AIA ranking.

An automatic berth guarantees participation, not a particular seed. A region champion can enter the bracket because it won its region, while its position against the other qualifiers is still determined by the overall ranking process.

2A: Week 10 crossovers can override the normal cutoff

2A uses five Week 10 crossover games between top-seeded teams from the regions. The winner of each crossover receives an automatic bid, including when that team would otherwise sit outside the normal top-24 ranking cutoff. Once those games are complete, the top eight ranked teams receive first-round byes and the remaining places in the 24-team bracket are filled from the ranking.

This makes the 2A field different from a simple “top 24 advance” model. A crossover winner can claim a place through that game, and the ranking then determines the rest of the field and the ordering of teams that did not receive an automatic bid.

1A: region leaders and a six-game minimum

Every 1A region’s top team receives an automatic berth. Other places are filled and seeded by the AIA ranking, producing a 12-team bracket. The top four teams receive first-round byes, and the tournament runs for four rounds.

The regular-season eligibility threshold is lower in 1A than in the larger conferences: six games are required under the 2025 guide, compared with eight games for 2A through 6A.

6A: a two-stage field shaped by Open results

Six-A qualification begins only after the Open Division has been selected. Four teams that lose in the Open first round return to the 6A field. They are joined by teams ranked Nos. 13–20, creating 12 teams. The Nos. 13–20 teams play the first 6A round; the winners then face the four Open first-round losers.

Unlike the other listed brackets, 6A is re-seeded after that opening round. AIA combines each team’s individual ranking with its first-round result before setting the next round. This means the opponent a team receives after the first 6A games is not locked solely to its original seed number.

How AIA rankings become playoff seeds

MaxPreps supplies the ranking foundation

AIA rankings are powered by MaxPreps, which describes itself as AIA’s official statistician. AIA uses modified MaxPreps rankings for playoff seeding. The ranking is therefore the central comparison tool for at-large qualification and bracket order, rather than a simple win-loss record or a single region table.

The exact ranking can change as results are added. A school’s seed should be read from the official bracket or ranking release for that season, not inferred from an early-season position.

Automatic qualification and seeding are separate decisions

Automatic qualification answers whether a school gets into the tournament. Seeding answers where that school is placed once the field is assembled. In 3A and 1A, region leaders receive guaranteed places; in 2A, crossover winners receive guaranteed places. Those guarantees do not automatically make the teams high seeds.

For 5A and 4A, the ranking directly supplies the 24 qualifiers and their order. For 3A and 1A, AIA first accounts for the automatic region berths, then uses the overall ranking to fill and seed the remaining field. For 2A, the crossover results are handled first, followed by ranking-based selection and byes.

6A is the exception after round one

Most brackets keep the published ranking order as the principal seeding input. Six-A adds first-round performance to the individual AIA ranking before the quarterfinal-stage matchups are set. A team’s result in that first 6A game can therefore improve or worsen its next opponent relative to what a fixed bracket would have produced.

How to determine a school’s playoff path

  1. Confirm the season and alignment. Check the AIA conference and region alignment for the applicable year. The 2026–2028 alignment publication is the current reference for those cycles, while the detailed bracket figures above come from the 2025 guide.
  2. Identify the school’s conference. Start with its AIA classification—1A through 6A—and remember that enrollment placement can be adjusted by the performance-movement rules.
  3. Check the regular-season game minimum. The 2025 guide requires at least eight games for 2A, 3A, 4A, 5A and 6A, and at least six games for 1A.
  4. Look for an automatic qualification route. In 3A and 1A, check the region standings. In 2A, check the Week 10 crossover result. In 5A, 4A and the ranking portion of the other fields, check the overall AIA ranking.
  5. Account for Open selection. For a 5A or 6A school, determine whether it is among the eight Open qualifiers. If it is 6A, remember that Open first-round losses return to the 6A field.
  6. Read the published bracket, not just the ranking. Byes, automatic berths and the 6A re-seeding process can make the bracket order differ from a casual reading of conference standings.

Common points of confusion

“A” numbers are not a national ranking

Arizona’s 1A–6A labels describe AIA conferences built primarily from enrollment bands, with performance-based movement in most conferences. They should not be read as a statewide ranking in which every 6A team is automatically better than every 5A team.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Winning a region does not always mean a top seed

Region results can guarantee entry in 3A and 1A, but the overall AIA ranking still orders the field. The same distinction applies to a 2A crossover winner: the win secures a tournament place, while ranking rules determine the rest of its bracket treatment.

The 6A bracket cannot be understood in isolation

Because Open takes the top eight 5A–6A teams and returns its first-round losers to 6A, Open results directly alter the 6A matchups. Looking only at the original 6A ranking omits part of the qualification process.

Numbers from one season may not carry forward

The 24-team 5A and 4A fields, 16-team 3A field, 24-team 2A field, 12-team 1A and 6A fields, eight-team Open field, bye counts and minimum-game requirements are all figures in the 2025 guide. AIA can change formats or alignments in a later season, so verify the current guide before treating those numbers as permanent.

What the system means for players and fans

The AIA model combines three different ideas: enrollment-based classification, performance-based conference movement and ranking-based tournament selection. Region standings matter most where AIA grants automatic berths; the overall ranking matters most for at-large places and seed order; and the Open Division creates a separate elite tournament whose first-round results feed back into 6A.

To follow a team accurately, track its conference and region, its AIA ranking, its eligibility-game total and—if it is in 5A or 6A—its Open status. Those four pieces explain why a team can qualify through a region or crossover, receive a bye, move into the Open bracket or be re-seeded after a 6A opening-round win.
