Their numbers also do different things: the proton count sets an element’s identity, while changing the neutron count creates a different isotope of that element. They have nearly equal masses, and their different charges come from different combinations of quarks.
Proton and neutron differences at a glance
| Property | Proton | Neutron |
|---|---|---|
| Electric charge | +1 elementary charge | Zero net charge |
| Approximate mass | 1.0073 u | 1.0087 u |
| Valence quarks | Two up quarks and one down quark | One up quark and two down quarks |
| Effect of changing its count in a nucleus | Changing the proton count changes the element | Changing the neutron count changes the isotope, not the element |
The mass figures are approximate particle masses listed by OpenStax; a bound nucleus’s total mass also reflects its binding energy. OpenStax’s atomic-structure summary gives the values as 1.0073 u for a proton and 1.0087 u for a neutron, so the neutron is slightly heavier.

Why charge determines the element
A proton’s positive charge gives the nucleus its positive nuclear charge. The number of protons is the atomic number, which defines the element: every nucleus with six protons is carbon, for example. A neutron is electrically neutral overall, so adding or removing neutrons does not change that atomic number. The U.S. Department of Energy’s nuclear physics explainer describes protons and neutrons as the particles that make up atomic nuclei.
How quarks give each nucleon its charge
Protons and neutrons are not fundamental particles; they are composite particles made of quarks and gluons. Their valence-quark combinations differ: a proton has two up quarks and one down quark, while a neutron has one up quark and two down quarks. Up quarks carry charge +2/3 of an elementary charge and down quarks carry −1/3, so the proton’s combination sums to +1 and the neutron’s sums to zero. The DOE’s weak-force explainer gives these quark combinations.

“Valence quarks” names the quarks that determine the nucleon’s overall identity and quantum numbers; it is not a claim that a proton or neutron is just three motionless particles. Both also contain gluons and a dynamic sea of quark–antiquark pairs.
How proton and neutron counts define isotopes
An isotope is a form of an element whose atoms have the same number of protons but different numbers of neutrons. The total number of protons and neutrons is the mass number. For example, carbon-12 and carbon-14 each have six protons, but they have six and eight neutrons respectively. Their element remains carbon, while their mass numbers—and nuclear properties—differ. Some isotopes are stable and others radioactive; changing the neutron count can affect nuclear stability. The DOE’s isotope explainer describes how isotopes differ in neutron count.

When a neutron changes into a proton
Protons and neutrons can transform into one another through the weak interaction, which changes quark flavor. This is distinct from the strong interaction, which binds nucleons in a nucleus. The DOE explains that protons and neutrons are held together by the strong force; that force does not itself convert one into the other.

In beta-minus decay, a neutron becomes a proton and emits an electron and an antineutrino. The mass number stays the same because one neutron is replaced by one proton, while the atomic number rises by one.

Beta-plus decay
In beta-plus decay, a proton becomes a neutron and emits a positron and a neutrino. The mass number again stays the same, while the atomic number falls by one. Because the proton count changes, the nucleus becomes a different element.

In introductory nuclear models, protons and neutrons are often treated as similar particles with different charge and isospin. At higher energies, experiments can probe their internal quark distributions. The DOE’s 2022 account of the EMC effect says quark distributions differ between free nucleons and nucleons bound inside nuclei. It discusses MARATHON measurements using helium-3 and tritium and an analysis suggesting the effect may influence down-quark distributions more than up-quark distributions. The interpretation remains an active research question; it is evidence of in-nucleus changes, not a complete settled explanation. DOE’s 2022 summary of the findings notes that further investigation is needed.
