How Are Lunar Impact Flashes Observed and Confirmed from Earth?

Observers record continuous video of the Moon’s shadowed surface, then assess each flash by its timing, location, fading light curve and motion. Independent simultaneous observations provide the strongest practical confirmation.

Lunar impact flashes are brief bursts of light produced when meteoroids strike the Moon. Observers look for them by continuously recording video of the Moon’s shadowed surface, then checking any apparent flash for its timing, position, brightness pattern and motion. The strongest evidence is a second, independent telescope recording a flash at the same time and lunar location.

Why observers watch the Moon’s dark portion

A meteoroid striking the Moon can release enough energy to produce a momentary flash. The event is brief and unpredictable, so a still photograph is unlikely to capture it. Continuous video gives observers a record to review later and lets them see how a candidate changes from one frame to the next.

Observers concentrate on the Moon’s unilluminated portion, where a flash can stand out against the darker surface. NASA’s Meteoroid Environment Office describes the basic task simply: “Looking for impacts on the Moon is as simple as pointing a telescope at its dark portion.” In practice, a useful observation also depends on a telescope and camera that can record faint events, coverage of enough of the shadowed area, continuous recording, and accurate timing.

The goal is not just to spot a bright pixel. A candidate must be assessed against other events that can look similar on video, including detector hits, electronic noise, atmospheric meteors and reflections from objects in orbit around Earth.

What equipment and observing conditions are needed?

Use a telescope and video recording

NASA’s Impact Flash! citizen-science project, launched in 2026, specifies a telescope at least 4 inches in diameter and video recording equipment for participants. That is the project’s stated threshold, not a universal minimum for every lunar-monitoring program. NASA notes that flashes are relatively rare and says robotic telescope and recording equipment can make the work easier by allowing observations to continue without someone manually operating the setup throughout a session.

NASA’s own Lunar Impact Monitoring Program uses two telescopes equipped with astronomical video cameras. Its ALaMO facility is described as using two 14-inch telescopes; those instruments illustrate a professional setup, not a requirement for an amateur observer. The cited NASA materials do not establish a specific camera model, frame rate, exposure setting or commercial equipment combination as necessary.

Balance sensitivity and coverage

A more sensitive system can reveal fainter flashes, while a wider field of view can record more of the Moon’s dark area at once. These aims can compete: changing a setup to cover more sky may affect how faint an event it can detect. NASA frames system design around that trade-off rather than giving a universal best configuration.

For a practical setup, prioritize stable, continuous video of the shadowed lunar surface and a field that covers as much of it as the system can record without losing the sensitivity needed to see brief flashes. The recording must also preserve enough detail to locate a candidate on the lunar disk and review its behavior across frames.

Choose suitable observing nights

NASA’s Meteoroid Environment Office says its monitoring program observes about 10 nights per month, when lunar illumination is between 10 and nearly 50 percent. This describes NASA’s schedule as stated on its program page; it is not a promise of a fixed monthly observing calendar or a rule that other observers must follow. The useful principle is to observe when a substantial shadowed portion is visible and the conditions allow the camera to record it.

How an observing session works

  1. Set up the telescope and video camera. Aim at the Moon’s unilluminated portion. Check that the recording shows enough of the dark lunar area to make a possible flash’s position identifiable.
  2. Record continuously. Because impacts are unpredictable, a short clip or single still image can miss the event. NASA describes low-light video recorded at roughly video-frame cadence, followed by review or automated searching. The materials do not specify a single required frame rate for all equipment.
  3. Keep reliable time information. Record when the video was captured and preserve timing information with the footage. Accurate timing lets another observer check whether a candidate appeared simultaneously in a separate recording.
  4. Review the video for candidate flashes. Search manually or use an automated process to flag brief bright events. Treat an apparent flash as a candidate until its duration, location, brightness change and apparent motion have been examined.
  5. Compare independent observations where available. Check whether a second telescope or observer recorded an event at the same time and lunar location. Separate cameras and sites can help distinguish a real lunar event from a detector hit or an object moving in Earth orbit.
  6. Preserve the original recording and its context. Keep the relevant clip together with its time information and observing details so the candidate can be checked against an independent record. NASA’s project asks participants to share video footage for research.

How researchers decide whether a flash is an impact

A real lunar impact is not identified by brightness alone. Reviewers consider several linked clues: whether the event occurs on the lunar surface, how long it lasts, how its light changes, whether it appears to move, and whether another observer recorded it independently.

Duration and brightness evolution

NASA describes an impact flash as having a sharp onset followed by a slower decrease in light. That fading pattern is useful because a point meteor in Earth’s atmosphere may produce a more symmetrical light curve. A light curve is the record of an event’s brightness over time; in video, the reviewer can compare its appearance across successive frames.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Duration matters, but it does not settle the question by itself. A longer event with a fading light curve is more informative than a single bright frame, yet it still needs to be examined for motion and other signs of a lookalike. Electronic recording noise can also create apparent events.

Position and apparent motion

A candidate should appear against the lunar background rather than travel across the field like a nearby object. Apparent motion can point to a satellite or orbital-debris glint. NASA also describes comparing observations from separated sites: parallax, an apparent shift against the lunar background when viewed from different locations, can help reveal an object in orbit rather than a flash fixed to the Moon’s surface.

Independent, simultaneous confirmation

A second recording is especially valuable because some false signals affect only one camera. A cosmic ray striking a detector may create a brief bright event in that camera’s video without any corresponding light on the Moon. NASA’s program uses two telescopes partly to help rule out cosmic rays and noise.

NASA’s FAQ says that when another observer more than about 10 kilometers away sees a flash at the same time and on the same lunar location, the event is probably an impact. The distance is an approximate criterion in that FAQ, published about 2008, rather than a universal boundary. The core test is independent, simultaneous agreement on time and lunar position.

NASA’s published candidate-screening rules

NASA’s independent-observer candidate criteria describe several ways an event may qualify for screening. The page was last updated in 2021. These are criteria for identifying candidates; meeting one does not mean that every event has received definitive physical confirmation.

Recorded event NASA candidate-screening condition
Multiple observers record the event The observations show a decreasing light curve and no apparent motion.
One recording shows a longer event The flash lasts at least three fields or frames and has a decreasing light curve.
One recording shows a bright, very brief event A readily identifiable event lasting two fields or frames has no apparent motion.
One recording shows a single-field or single-frame flash Classified as a cosmic ray unless another telescope confirms it.

“Field” and “frame” refer to the units used to assess the recorded video in NASA’s criteria. The key distinction is that a one-frame event is particularly vulnerable to confusion with a detector hit, while independent confirmation can change how that event is assessed.

What can be inferred from a confirmed flash?

The measured position and light curve can support photometric analysis and help researchers estimate properties of the impactor. The estimate is not a direct weighing of the meteoroid: it depends on how much impact energy became visible light.

NASA calls that fraction luminous efficiency. It varies with impact speed and the nature of the lunar surface, so uncertainty in speed makes estimates for sporadic impacts less precise. Impacts associated with a meteor shower can be easier to estimate because shower members share a known speed. NASA describes hypervelocity experiments on lunar simulants as one way to improve estimates of luminous efficiency.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Monitoring impacts also helps researchers measure meteoroids that are difficult to study by other methods. NASA says the observations inform assessment of hazards to spacecraft and future lunar exploration. Watching during meteor showers can help improve forecasts of periods when meteoroid activity is elevated.

What a candidate does—and does not—prove

  • A bright spot in one frame is a lead, not a confirmed impact. Cosmic rays and recording noise can affect a single camera, and NASA’s screening rules treat an unconfirmed one-frame flash as a cosmic ray.
  • A fading flash with no apparent motion is stronger evidence. Its duration and light curve can help distinguish an impact candidate from some atmospheric meteors and orbital glints, but these clues should be assessed together.
  • A simultaneous match from an independent observer is the strongest practical check described here. Agreement in time and lunar location makes a camera-specific artifact less likely; observations from separated sites can also help identify parallax from orbiting objects.
  • A confirmed event still leaves uncertainty about the impactor’s size. Converting visible light into impact energy and mass depends on luminous efficiency, which varies with speed and surface conditions.

NASA’s published guidance provides a clear method for observing and screening candidates, but it does not establish a current, program-by-program comparison of international monitoring networks or a controlled comparison of commercial cameras. The useful standard for an observer is therefore to preserve continuous, accurately timed video and seek an independent simultaneous record whenever possible.
