Start with airport management or its leasing office at airports within a realistic travel radius. Ask about hangar and outdoor tie-down availability, the application or waiting-list process, and written lease or permit terms. If a hangar is unavailable, outdoor parking can be an option—but the aircraft must be secured according to its own instructions and the airport’s rules, with a plan for severe weather.
Where to start looking for hangar or tie-down space
Availability, prices, eligibility rules and wait times are local. There is no reliable nationwide inventory or standard waiting period to use as a substitute for asking the airport directly. Begin with airports you could reasonably reach on the ground, considering how often you expect to fly and how much travel to and from the aircraft is practical.

Contact the airport manager or leasing office
Ask airport management or its leasing office which organization handles hangars and which handles ramp tie-down spaces. Request current availability for both. The airport may keep an official waiting list, but processes vary: find out whether a list exists, who can join it, how offers are made, how often it is updated, and how quickly you must respond when space becomes available.

Use an FBO as an additional local contact
A fixed-base operator (FBO) may know who manages local hangars or tie-downs, or be able to point you toward the right office. Its role differs from airport to airport, so verify availability, price and terms with airport management or the actual lessor. Do not treat a referral or informal indication of space as a confirmed offer.
Ask about tie-downs if no hangar is available
If the airport has no open hangar, ask whether it offers outdoor tie-down spaces and whether those spaces have restrictions that apply to your aircraft. Find out how the anchors are arranged, where the space is located, whether it has adequate clearance, and what the airport expects in severe weather. A nominally available spot is useful only if the aircraft fits and can be positioned and secured under the applicable instructions.
How to compare actual spaces
Use the same questions at every airport so that you compare real offers rather than a hangar at one airport against an incomplete description of a tie-down at another. Request current amounts and requirements in writing. There is no general hangar rent, deposit or average wait time established here; do not assume one airport’s terms apply elsewhere.

| What to compare | Questions for the airport or lessor |
|---|---|
| Availability | Is a space open now? Is there a waiting list? How are offers made, and how quickly must an applicant respond? |
| Fit and movement | Does the bay or outdoor spot accommodate the aircraft’s wingspan and tail? Is there adequate door clearance, access and room to move the aircraft without obstruction? |
| Total cost | What are the current rent or fees, deposit, utilities, taxes and any separate airport or FBO charges? Ask for the complete written amount and how often each charge recurs. |
| Access | What are the gate, building and operating hours? Are escorts, advance calls or call-out arrangements required? |
| Lease or permit | What are the duration, renewal, termination, subletting, maintenance, permitted-use and move-out requirements? |
| Protection and site conditions | What security, weather exposure, drainage, fire rules, emergency access and tie-down facilities apply? |
| Insurance | What coverage and proof does the airport or lessor require? Ask your insurer whether the proposed storage arrangement affects your aircraft’s coverage. |
These questions are a practical comparison checklist, not a claim that every airport must offer the same features or use the same lease. The FAA says sponsors may manage hangar rules and address matters such as emergency access, fire codes, insurance and vehicle traffic; local rules and the written agreement determine what applies at a particular facility.
Check the physical fit, not just the listed dimensions
Confirm the aircraft can enter, fit inside and be moved in the proposed space. Ask about the clear opening at the hangar door as well as the space within the bay. For an outdoor spot, check the available wingtip clearance, the position of nearby aircraft or obstacles, and whether the aircraft can be aligned with the anchors. If the airport’s description does not answer these points, arrange to see the space before committing.
Read the written terms before paying
Obtain the lease or permit and any associated rules before paying a deposit or moving the aircraft. Make sure the written documents identify the space, state the charges and payment schedule, and explain access, permitted use, maintenance responsibilities, insurance, renewal, termination and move-out requirements. If a verbal assurance matters to your decision, ask for it to be included in the agreement or confirmed in writing by the responsible party.

Hangar or outdoor tie-down: which suits your situation?
| Consideration | Hangar | Outdoor tie-down |
|---|---|---|
| Weather exposure | Provides shelter; the FAA identifies aircraft storage as a hangar’s primary purpose. | Leaves the aircraft exposed to weather and requires correct securing procedures. |
| Availability | Ask whether a space is open or whether the airport maintains a waiting list; timing varies locally. | Ask whether a suitable tie-down is available and whether the airport places aircraft-specific restrictions on its use. |
| Cost | Obtain the current written rent, deposit and other charges from the lessor. | Obtain the current written fee and any related charges from the airport or operator. |
| Access and location | Check building access, hours, door clearance and the route for moving the aircraft. | Check gate access, hours, anchor layout, clearance and the spot’s location. |
| Owner’s procedures | Follow the agreement and airport rules for use and access. | Follow the aircraft manufacturer’s tie-down instructions and airport requirements; plan for changing weather. |
A hangar is not automatically the right choice at any price or distance, and an outdoor spot is not automatically unsuitable. Compare the actual offer against how often you will use the aircraft, how far away it is, what access it allows, the terms and cost, and the aircraft’s storage needs. The available evidence does not establish a universal insurance discount, maintenance reduction or aircraft-life benefit from choosing one arrangement.

The FAA’s Frequently Asked Questions & Answers on FAA Policy on Use of Hangars at Obligated Airports, last updated July 30, 2025, says: “The primary purpose of an aircraft hangar is aircraft storage.” It identifies storage of active aircraft as a permissible aeronautical use and says sponsors should manage use through written lease agreements or permits while minimizing time for people on waiting lists.
The policy applies to aircraft storage facilities on federally obligated airports when the facilities are designated for aeronautical use on an FAA-approved Airport Layout Plan. It does not govern privately owned, off-airport facilities. The FAQ says a non-federally obligated airport owner may impose restrictions it considers necessary, although other federal requirements may still apply. The policy is not an individual rental contract: check the specific airport’s rules and the agreement offered for the space.

How to tie down a small aircraft outdoors
Follow the aircraft manufacturer’s instructions for its approved tie-down points and procedure, as well as the airport’s requirements. FAA Advisory Circular AC 65-9A says small aircraft should be tied down after each flight to reduce the chance of damage from sudden storms. It discusses positioning an aircraft as nearly into the wind as anchor locations permit, maintaining wingtip clearance, and using appropriate tie-down procedures.
For small single-engine aircraft, AC 65-9A states that anchors should provide “a minimum holding power (strength) of approximately 3,000 pounds each.” This is FAA guidance on anchor holding power for that aircraft category, not a universal rating for a particular rope, strap or kit, and not a guarantee of safe performance in every soil, pavement or weather condition. The reviewed source does not establish the circular’s version year; consult the FAA document and verify its current status.
Use that guidance as a reason to inspect the actual tie-down arrangement, not as permission to improvise. Confirm that the space’s anchor positions work with the aircraft’s approved tie-down points, and use only equipment and procedures compatible with the aircraft and the airport’s facilities. If the anchors are damaged, poorly positioned or unsuitable for the aircraft, ask the airport operator how the issue should be resolved before relying on them.

Before leaving the aircraft
- Park in the assigned area and orient the aircraft as nearly into the wind as the anchor locations allow, consistent with FAA guidance and the aircraft’s instructions.
- Maintain wingtip clearance from other aircraft and nearby objects as required by the available space and airport rules.
- Secure the aircraft at the manufacturer-designated points using the aircraft-specific procedure and compatible tie-down equipment.
- Check that the tie-down arrangement is properly set before leaving, and comply with any additional site rules.
AC 65-9A provides general guidance; it does not replace the aircraft flight manual or manufacturer instructions. The right points, method and equipment depend on the aircraft. If instructions conflict or you cannot tell whether an anchor arrangement is appropriate, resolve the question with the aircraft manufacturer or a qualified aviation professional and the airport operator rather than guessing.

FAA Advisory Circular AC 20-35C, Tiedown Sense, issued July 12, 1983, says that when there is sufficient warning, moving an aircraft out of the impending storm area is the preferred protective measure; a stormproof hangar or other suitable shelter is the next best measure. If shelter is unavailable, the circular discusses securing the aircraft with tie-downs. It also recommends securing doors and windows and covering engine openings and pitot-static tubes to prevent foreign matter from entering.
This is advisory guidance, not a one-size-fits-all storm procedure. Check the circular’s current status and follow the aircraft’s own flight manual and manufacturer instructions for tie-down and storm preparation. In particular, do not assume that generic covers fit every aircraft or that a cover can substitute for the aircraft-specific procedure.
Make the plan specific to your aircraft and airport
- Ask the airport or lessor what procedures, if any, apply during severe weather, including access restrictions and who is responsible for site actions.
- Know in advance whether you can reach the aircraft and what options the airport permits if a storm is forecast.
- Use only aircraft-appropriate covers for engine openings and pitot-static tubes, following manufacturer instructions.
- If the aircraft remains outdoors, use its approved securing procedure and the airport’s rules rather than relying on generic equipment claims.
AC 20-35C’s publication date is 1983. Its advice should be read alongside current airport requirements and aircraft-specific instructions; the circular alone does not establish which equipment or procedure is suitable for every airframe.
A practical sequence from first inquiry to storing the aircraft
- Set a workable search radius. Consider flight frequency and the ground travel needed to reach each airport. There is no single ideal distance; a remote space may be less useful if reaching it regularly is impractical.
- Contact airport management. Ask for current hangar and tie-down availability, the application process, eligibility, who manages each type of space, and whether an official waiting list exists.
- Clarify waiting-list mechanics. If a list is maintained, ask how it is updated, how offers are made, and how quickly you must respond. Do not assume that joining a list guarantees a space or a particular timeline.
- Contact FBOs if useful. Treat them as additional local sources and confirm any lead with the airport or actual lessor.
- Inspect the proposed space. Check aircraft fit, door or ground access, clearance, movement, anchor layout, and the site conditions relevant to your choice.
- Compare the complete offers. Record current charges, access rules, agreement terms, safety requirements and insurance requirements for each option.
- Review documents before committing. Get the applicable lease or permit and rules in writing before paying a deposit or moving the aircraft.
- Prepare the storage procedure. For a hangar, understand the facility’s access and use rules. For a tie-down, have the aircraft-specific securing procedure and severe-weather plan ready before the first outdoor parking.
Questions to have answered before you commit
- Who is the actual lessor or permit issuer, and who manages hangar space versus tie-downs?
- What exactly is available now, and what happens if it is not available?
- Does the aircraft fit with enough clearance to enter, park and move safely?
- What is the total written cost, including deposits and separate charges?
- What are the access hours and any escort, call-out or gate procedures?
- What are the agreement’s duration, renewal, termination, permitted-use and move-out terms?
- What security, fire, emergency-access, maintenance and insurance requirements apply?
- For an outdoor space, are the anchors suitable for the aircraft’s specified tie-down arrangement, and what severe-weather rules apply?
A clear answer to each applicable question makes it easier to distinguish a genuinely usable storage option from one that is merely listed as available.
