What the original anime provides
The television version is a 12-episode series that began airing in 2011. Its format gives each episode room to establish a situation, end on a turning point and let the next episode reframe what came before. That rhythm is part of the experience, not merely a container for the plot.

Because scenes remain attached to their original episode contexts, pauses, opening and ending transitions and the timing of revelations have their television-era shape. A first-time viewer can therefore track the story through the same sequence and spacing that defined its initial broadcast. The official franchise history treats this series as the source that the first two films re-edit rather than replace.

What Beginnings and Eternal change
They cover the same central story in two films
Beginnings and Eternal together re-edit all 12 television episodes. The official film introduction presents them as a compressed way to experience the existing story, and both films were originally released in October 2012. They are therefore adaptations of the series into theatrical form, not unrelated side stories.

“Re-edit” matters here. The movies are not described by the official sources as shot-for-shot copies. Material originally separated by an episode break can appear in immediate succession, and scenes can be shortened or connected to make a continuous cinema narrative. The core events and character journeys remain recognizable, but the route between them is more compact.
Episode boundaries become theatrical continuity
Director Akiyuki Shinbo explained that a compilation requires cutting scenes and connecting episodes that were originally separate, with close attention to small details. In his words: “When making a compilation, you cut scenes and connect episodes that were originally separate, so you have to be very careful with the small details.”
That process changes how information arrives. Developments can follow one another with less time for the viewer to pause between them. Shinbo warned that details may pass quickly if a viewer does not remember an earlier line or interaction. Someone who watched the television series recently may find the compressed transitions easy to follow; a first-time viewer may prefer the slower episode structure before attempting the films.
Animation and finishing were updated for a theater screen
The production did more than assemble existing television footage. Shinbo described reviewing how the television image and movement would look when projected large and reworking animation and finishing for theatrical presentation. The official history likewise identifies visual updates in the first two films.

Magical-girl transformations were specifically remade. Shinbo explained: “The transformation scenes of the magical girls are, after all, scenes that look impressive, so we remade them.” Witch-appearance scenes were also changed at the request of Gekidan Inu Curry, the creative team associated with those distinctive sequences. These revisions can make familiar moments feel staged for a cinema screen rather than simply enlarged from a broadcast master.
New music changes the emotional emphasis
The films use changed music as well as revised images. A different cue can alter whether a scene feels ominous, mournful, urgent or triumphant even when the underlying dialogue and action are familiar. Shinbo discussed this directly, noting that new music changes the impression of a known scene.
This is why the compilation films can feel different on a repeat viewing without introducing a different plot. The edit determines which moments touch one another, the visual revisions change what draws the eye, and the score changes the emotional color of those moments.
Small presentation details were adjusted
Shinbo described the theatrical version as a personal image of a “world that has looped one or two more times.” That wording should not be treated as a declaration that the compilation films add a newly confirmed canonical loop. He was using an image to describe small altered details and the sensation of familiarity with variation.

Examples he mentioned include a hair accessory for Sayaka and Madoka appearing in casual clothes. These are visible presentation changes, not evidence that the films replace the central story with a different continuity. They show how the production used the theatrical version to refine character presentation while preserving the larger narrative.
What has not been established
Official material identifies the films as re-edits and describes broad categories of revision, but it does not provide a complete cut-by-cut list of every omitted, added or rearranged scene. There is also no authoritative percentage stating how much footage changed, and the available sources do not establish a precise runtime comparison between the 12 episodes and the two films. Claims that assign an exact number of deleted scenes or a precise compression ratio go beyond the documented information.
Why the pacing feels different
The television series distributes its developments over 12 separate installments. The compilation films remove many of the natural pauses created by episode endings and place connected scenes closer together. This can make the films feel more intense and streamlined, but it also reduces the breathing room in which a viewer might revisit a line, absorb a visual idea or anticipate the next episode.
That difference is a format trade-off rather than a simple quality ranking. The series offers the original rhythm and the clearest sense of how the story was delivered in 2011. The films offer continuity designed for a single theatrical sitting, with revised audiovisual details and fewer interruptions. A viewer’s familiarity with the plot also matters: someone returning to the story may appreciate the density, while someone learning the premise may benefit from the television version’s spacing.

How Rebellion fits into the movie line-up
Rebellion is different in kind from Beginnings and Eternal. The official franchise history calls it a completely new work produced after the compilation films. It is not a third movie that summarizes the remaining television episodes, nor is it simply another version of the 12-episode series.
That distinction resolves a common viewing-order confusion. The first two movies can stand in for the television story as a condensed theatrical route. Rebellion belongs after that story as a continuation, so watching it without understanding the series or its compilation equivalent removes the context it expects the audience to have.
The later film project Walpurgisnacht Rising is presented on its official site as a canonical sequel to Rebellion. In other words, the franchise’s movie chronology moves from the two compilation films to Rebellion, then onward to that sequel rather than looping back to retell the television episodes again.

Choose the television series first when you want the original structure
- You are discovering the story for the first time and want each episode’s setup, pause and reveal in its broadcast order.
- You want the clearest sense of the 2011 television presentation.
- You prefer having more time between major developments to process dialogue and character decisions.
Choose Beginnings and Eternal when you want a theatrical retelling
- You already know the television story and want a more concentrated revisit.
- You prefer a continuous film experience to an episodic one.
- You are interested in revised animation, remade transformation sequences, changed witch scenes and a different musical treatment.
Watch Rebellion after one complete version of the original story
Use either the 12-episode series or the two compilation films as your foundation, then watch Rebellion as the new story that follows. Treating all three movies as recaps obscures the reason Rebellion exists and misrepresents its place in the franchise.

Home-video editions and what they contain
Aniplex of America announced a three-disc Puella Magi Madoka Magica: the Movie Trilogy Blu-ray in 2021. The set contains Beginnings, Eternal and Rebellion, and the announcement lists approximately 357 minutes of content, Japanese and English audio, and English and Spanish subtitles.

Streaming availability is location- and date-dependent. The official material cited here does not establish a universal streaming service, so check the services and language options available in your country at the time you plan to watch.
Common misunderstandings to avoid
- “All three movies are recaps.” Only Beginnings and Eternal re-edit the television story. Rebellion is new.
- “The first two movies are identical to the show.” They re-edit the episodes and include production updates, revised transformations and witch scenes, and changed music.
- “The loop wording proves an additional plot loop.” Shinbo’s “one or two more times” description was his image for subtle differences in the theatrical world, not a separately confirmed plot event.
- “There is an official exact cut list.” The available official descriptions do not enumerate every change or give a precise cut percentage.
- “The trilogy’s listed runtime is a direct series-versus-films comparison.” The approximately 357-minute figure belongs to the 2021 three-film Blu-ray announcement and should not be used as an exact measure of how much television footage was removed.
Bottom line for a viewing decision
The original anime and the first two movies tell the same essential story through different delivery systems. The series gives you the complete 12-episode television rhythm; Beginnings and Eternal give you a tighter theatrical edit with refreshed visuals and sound. After either route, Rebellion is the step into a genuinely new story, not another summary.
