Archaeologists identify ancient wooden tools from two kinds of evidence: rare wooden objects preserved in exceptional conditions, and indirect traces—such as wear and microscopic residues—left on stone tools used to work wood. A surviving object can reveal its shape and how it was made; traces on stone can support an inference of woodworking, but usually cannot recover the missing wooden tool’s exact form. The distinction matters: evidence of woodworking is not automatically evidence for a particular wooden implement.
Why so little ancient wood survives
Wood decays, so its absence from an archaeological site does not show that people there lacked wooden technology. Waterlogged settings—including rivers, lakes, marshes, coastal deposits, and ground below the permanent water table—can slow decay and preserve wood. Historic England notes that waterlogged deposits can retain wooden objects and construction features, sometimes with details such as tool marks and carvings. Dry or oxygen-rich conditions are generally less favorable to preservation.

Preservation can make the archaeological record uneven: a site with exceptional conditions may preserve evidence that is missing from otherwise comparable sites. A striking find demonstrates what can survive in those conditions, not how common such preservation was across ancient communities.

At Kalambo Falls in Zambia, researchers reported two interlocking logs joined by an intentionally cut transverse notch in waterlogged deposits. The study authors dated the deposits by luminescence to at least 476 ± 23 thousand years ago. This is evidence of early structural woodworking, not proof of a hand tool. The 2023 Nature study illustrates how exceptional preservation can reveal woodworking otherwise invisible in a stone-only record.

What archaeologists can learn from surviving wood
When a wooden object survives, identification begins with its context and condition. Archaeologists record where it was found, its orientation, dimensions, shape, and visible modifications. They examine cuts, facets, stopmarks, polish, and other surface traces, weighing whether they reflect manufacture or use—or instead decay, compression, handling, or excavation.
The questions are separate: What material is it? How was it shaped? What task might it have served? Context, dating, and the pattern of physical traces help build an interpretation, but a material identification by itself does not establish an object’s function.

Wood anatomy can identify the material
Comparing a sample’s microscopic anatomy with reference material can identify its wood taxon, sometimes to species when diagnostic features remain. In a Historic England report, comparative anatomical examination covered 96 charred and waterlogged artefacts from London excavations. The report found examples made from native British woods as well as woods from elsewhere in Europe, the Mediterranean region, and Southeast Asia. That sample shows how the method can be used; it is not a general rule about which woods ancient toolmakers preferred. Historic England’s 1987 report describes the examination.

A fragment may retain an outline but lack the diagnostic facets or marks needed to infer how it was made or used. Historic England’s 2025 preservation grading scheme connects the clarity of surface information with potential for species identification, scientific dating, and recognition of woodworking details. Better-preserved examples may show conversion, facets, tool signatures, or stopmarks; poorly preserved material may retain only basic form or a small sample suitable for analysis. A lack of visible wear on degraded wood is a limit of the evidence, not proof the object went unused. The grading scheme sets out these preservation distinctions.

How archaeologists infer woodworking when the wood is gone
Stone tools can preserve microscopic wear and residues from working wood. In experimental replication, Hardy and Garufi observed wood fragments on stone tools; microscopic anatomy allowed species identification in some cases. They also found that residue distribution, considered alongside use-wear patterns, helps identify the action performed. This can support an inference that a stone tool was used in woodworking and sometimes indicate the worked material. It does not, on its own, establish the shape of a missing wooden implement or prove that every similar stone tool was used on wood. Their experimental study explains the method.
The strongest interpretations combine independent lines of evidence: tool form and wear, residue analysis, experimental replication, archaeological context, and any surviving wooden remains. Each supports a different part of the account. A stone tool might show traces consistent with woodworking; reconstructing a specific wooden tool from those traces alone goes beyond what they establish.

Why waterlogged wood needs specialist assessment
Waterlogged wood can look intact while its internal structure has been weakened by chemical and biological decay. Excavation changes its conditions, and subsequent mechanical damage or deterioration can compromise the object. The conservation review by High and Penkman explains why surface appearance alone is not a reliable measure of preservation or analytical potential. Their review of assessment methods discusses these risks.
Historic England’s guidance, published 12 December 2025, covers excavation, recording, sampling, storage, assessment, analysis, conservation, and curation. It recommends specialist advice for waterlogged-wood sites and explicitly does not replace advice from waterlogged-wood specialists. Decisions about sampling and care depend on the object’s condition and burial environment, so the guidance is not a do-it-yourself conservation recipe. Read the guidance for the full field-to-collection process.

How to judge a claim about an ancient wooden tool
- Identify what is directly observed. Is there a wooden object, a surface modification, a residue, or wear on another tool?
- Separate material from function. Identifying wood species does not by itself identify what an object did.
- Check preservation quality. Degraded wood or ambiguous traces support narrower conclusions than clear diagnostic details.
- Look for independent support. Agreement among microscopy, use-wear, context, dating, and experimental replication strengthens an interpretation.
- Distinguish activity from reconstruction. Evidence of woodworking may support the activity without revealing the exact shape of the missing tool.
