If your Surface Laptop won’t charge or turn on, start with the reversible checks: disconnect docks and accessories, verify the outlet and power connections, and connect a supply that meets the requirements for your exact model. Leave the laptop charging for at least 15 minutes before trying to start it. If the screen is black, try the display-wake shortcut; if the laptop remains unresponsive, use Microsoft’s forced-restart method. The steps below help distinguish a drained battery or power-delivery issue from a fault that needs service.
Try these checks first
- Disconnect accessories. Unplug USB devices, SD cards, external monitors, keyboard covers, docks, and other connected accessories. Leave only the power supply connected and try starting the laptop. An accessory can interfere with startup or draw power.
- Check the power source and connections. Try a different wall outlet and make sure the connections at the outlet, power supply, and laptop are secure. Disconnect other accessories that draw substantial power. Use a power supply designed for your exact Surface Laptop model; charging requirements vary by model. See Microsoft’s Surface charging guidance and model-specific power supply requirements.
- Let a drained battery charge. Keep the appropriate power supply connected for at least 15 minutes, then close and reopen the lid and press the power button. A deeply depleted device may not respond immediately.
If the screen is black, try waking it
With a keyboard connected or available, press Windows logo key + Ctrl + Shift + B. This is Microsoft’s display-wake shortcut. If there is still no response, proceed to a forced restart.

Force-restart the Surface Laptop
Press and hold the power button until the Surface logo appears, which may take about 20 seconds. Microsoft lists this forced-restart instruction for Surface Laptop models. If the laptop still will not start, use Microsoft’s startup troubleshooting steps and consider service if the basic checks do not resolve it.
Check the Surface Connect charger light
If you charge through Surface Connect, inspect the connector’s LED. Its behavior can help identify whether the connection is being detected:

- Light off: Reseat the connector and try another outlet.
- Light blinking or flashing: Check the connector and port for debris or damage. Disconnect the charger and USB accessories, wait at least 10 seconds, then clean the connector with a soft, dry, lint-free cloth. Reconnect it; if needed, try flipping the connector.
- Solid white but the laptop still has trouble: Continue with the battery and power-supply checks below.
Do not use a physically damaged cable or connector. Microsoft’s charging troubleshooting page recommends a genuine Microsoft or Microsoft-licensed accessory for charging.
If Windows starts, read the battery icon
When the laptop boots, check the battery icon in Windows before assuming the battery has failed. Some icon states indicate a charging limit or power-supply issue rather than a dead battery.

- Heart on the battery: Smart charging may be limiting charge to 80% to help manage battery health.
- Charge stops at 50%: Battery Limit may be enabled.
- Exclamation mark: The power being delivered may be insufficient to charge the battery.
- Red X: The power supply is detected, but the battery is not.

When to test another charger
If the connections are secure and the laptop still does not charge, test with another supply that is compatible with the exact Surface Laptop model. USB-C charging is an option only on models that support it, and the USB-C power-delivery charger must meet the model’s requirements. Check the required wattage and supported charging method in Microsoft’s power supply and charging requirements before buying a replacement. Microsoft recommends using a genuine Microsoft or Microsoft-licensed charging accessory.

Windows-only checks for a laptop that still runs
If Windows is working but charging remains abnormal, use the Surface app to check for updates and identify device issues. Microsoft also documents a battery-driver uninstall and re-detection procedure for certain charging states. Follow that procedure only when its conditions apply; Microsoft warns not to use it on Surface Pro X. These software steps cannot fix a Surface Laptop that will not boot.

Arrange service if the laptop still will not turn on after the checks above, Windows reports that the battery is not detected, or the charging port, connector, or cable is damaged. Microsoft’s startup guidance and charging guidance direct unresolved problems to repair or replacement service. Depending on your region and coverage, options may include a Microsoft service order, in-person support where available, or self-repair for people with suitable technical experience and tools.
