The clearest documented thread runs from the original iPhone’s 2007 introduction through interface ideas Apple now brings together in Liquid Glass, the design used in iOS 26. That is a story of software evolution, not a complete visual history of every iPhone’s hardware.
2007: the iPhone becomes Apple’s new design canvas
Steve Jobs introduced the original iPhone on January 9, 2007, Apple later recalled in its tenth-anniversary retrospective. Apple Support also lists 2007 as the original iPhone’s year of introduction. Those sources establish the starting point, but do not provide a model-by-model account of how the phone’s materials, dimensions, or controls changed over the years.

That distinction matters: “iPhone design” can mean the physical handset, the software interface, or the way the two work together. Apple’s more detailed account of design lineage is about software. It describes Liquid Glass as the latest step in a continuing development of Apple interfaces, rather than a claim that every iPhone has followed one unbroken visual formula.

Apple’s software lineage: from Aqua to Liquid Glass
In its WWDC25 presentation, Apple designer Chan called Liquid Glass “a significant new step and evolution of the look and feel of Apple software.” Chan described its references as spanning “all the way from the Aqua user interface of Mac OS X, through to the realtime blurs of iOS 7, to the fluidity of iPhone X, the flexibility of the Dynamic Island, and the immersive interface of visionOS.” Apple’s Meet Liquid Glass session presents those moments as influences on a current design system—not as a full, independent history of every interface change.

- This phone is unlocked and compatible with any carrier of choice on GSM and CDMA networks (e.g. AT&T, T-Mobile, Sprint, Verizon, US Cellular, Cricket, Metro, Tracfone, Mint Mobile, etc.).
- Please check with your carrier to verify compatibility.
- The device does not come with headphones or a SIM card. It does include a generic (Mfi certified) charging cable.
- Tested for battery health and guaranteed to have a minimum battery capacity of 80%.
Blur, translucency, and a sense of layers
Apple describes Liquid Glass as a dynamic digital material that bends and shapes light. Rounded, floating forms and lens-like effects are intended to make interface layers legible while letting content behind them show through. The design also responds to touch and app context, according to Apple’s presentation.
This marks a shift in how Apple describes the interface: not only as fixed buttons and panels, but as a material-like layer that can change with what is happening on screen. That is Apple’s design rationale, not an independent usability finding or proof that every user will find the interface clearer.

Geometry designed to sit over content
Apple ties Liquid Glass’s rounded shapes to the geometry of modern devices and emphasizes the relationship between controls, system elements, and the content beneath them. The aim, in Apple’s explanation, is to distinguish layers without making the interface feel detached from the app. It is a design approach built around depth and visibility rather than simply adding decoration.

Apple’s September 9, 2025 iPhone 17 announcement describes iOS 26 as using Liquid Glass to make app and system experiences more expressive, focus attention on content, and remain familiar. Those are Apple’s stated goals; the announcement does not independently measure whether users experience the interface that way. The iPhone 17 announcement also describes that phone’s rounded display corners and aluminum design, but it is not a generation-by-generation comparison of iPhone enclosures.

- 6.1inch Super Retina XDR display. Aluminum with color-infused glass back. Ring/Silent switch
- Dynamic Island. A magical way to interact with iPhone. A16 Bionic chip with 5-core GPU
- Advanced dual-camera system. 48MP Main | Ultra Wide. Super-high-resolution photos (24MP and 48MP). Next-generation portraits with Focus and Depth Control. 4X optical zoom range
- Emergency SOS via satellite. Crash Detection. Roadside Assistance via satellite
- Up to 26 hours video playback. USB C, Supports USB 2. Face ID
The through-line is therefore continuity in Apple’s account of its software design, alongside changes in how the interface uses blur, translucency, layering, and context. Liquid Glass is presented as a new synthesis of earlier ideas—not a rejection of everything before it, nor evidence that the physical iPhone has changed in the same way.
Physical design also includes how a phone can be repaired
Appearance is only one part of product design. Apple’s June 2024 Longevity, by Design report says the iPhone 15 lineup had 11 repairable key modules, including the back glass, battery, display, and cameras. Apple also reported that making the back glass an individual repair module lowered repair costs by over 60%. Both figures refer specifically to Apple’s report and the iPhone 15 context; they should not be generalized to other generations or treated as independent comparative testing.

- 6.1" Super Retina XDR display. 5G Superfast downloads, high?quality streaming
- Cinematic mode in 1080p at 30 fps. Dolby Vision HDR video recording up to 4K at 60 fps. 2X Optical zoom range
- A15 Bionic chip. New 6-core CPU with 2 performance and 4 efficiency cores. New 4-core GPU. New 16-core Neural Engine
- Up to 19 hours video playback. Face ID. Ceramic Shield front. Aerospace-grade aluminum
That serviceability detail adds another dimension to design: how a product is organized for repair, not just how it looks or feels. The cited report supports a specific claim about iPhone 15, rather than a broad conclusion about the repairability of every iPhone.

What changed—and what the available milestones establish
- The starting point: Apple dates the original iPhone’s introduction to January 9, 2007.
- The clearest documented evolution: Apple traces Liquid Glass to interface ideas it names from Aqua, iOS 7, iPhone X, Dynamic Island, and visionOS.
- The current software direction: Apple says iOS 26 uses Liquid Glass to make experiences more expressive, focus attention on content, and remain familiar; those are design intentions, not independently verified outcomes.
- A hardware-design consideration beyond appearance: Apple’s 2024 report identifies repair modules and a back-glass repair-cost reduction for the iPhone 15 lineup specifically.
Together, these milestones show how Apple describes its design language: a software interface that reuses and recombines earlier ideas, plus hardware decisions that can include serviceability. They do not establish a complete visual timeline of every iPhone’s shape, materials, or construction.
