Wordle narrows down one hidden five-letter answer, Connections sorts 16 words into four themed groups, and Strands asks you to trace theme-related words through a letter grid. The key difference is the kind of work each puzzle asks you to do: deduction, association, or visual search.
How Wordle works
In the official NYT Games app, Wordle asks you to guess one five-letter word in six tries or fewer. Each guess gives you information to use as you narrow down the answer, so the central challenge is making each attempt useful within a fixed limit. NYT Games App Store listing

That makes Wordle a good fit if you want a short, bounded deduction puzzle: you work toward one answer rather than searching for several words or sorting a list.
How Connections works
Connections gives you 16 words and asks you to sort them into four groups of four, with each group sharing something in common. The New York Times Help Center describes the goal as finding “themes between words.” Each group is marked with a color: yellow is the easiest category and purple the trickiest. There is one solution for each puzzle, but words can appear to fit more than one category, making plausible distractors part of the challenge. The Times says its editors curate words and categories using the Oxford Dictionary. NYT Help Center: Connections
#1 Best Overall
Connections suits players who enjoy word associations, category spotting, and lateral thinking. The puzzle is less about finding a hidden answer from letter feedback and more about deciding which shared idea best explains a set of words.
How Strands works
The NYT describes Strands as a word search with a twist: players find hidden words and uncover the day’s theme. Unlike Connections, it does not give you a bank of words to sort; unlike Wordle, it is not built around one five-letter answer. NYT Games App Store listing

For more detailed rules, the independent, non-affiliated Strands Today guide describes a 6-by-8 grid. It says letters can be traced through adjacent cells horizontally, vertically, or diagonally, and a word’s path can bend. The special word called the spangram spans the board and names the theme. The guide also describes a hint earned by finding three words that are not theme words. These grid details come from that guide, rather than an official NYT rules page. Strands combines theme inference with visual scanning: you interpret the clue, look for words that fit, then trace their paths in the grid. It may appeal if you like word searches but want a thematic problem to solve as well.

Wordle vs. Connections vs. Strands
| Game | What you work with | What you must find | Main kind of thinking |
|---|---|---|---|
| Wordle | Letter feedback from your guesses | One five-letter answer, in six tries or fewer | Deduction |
| Connections | A bank of 16 words | Four groups of four linked by a shared theme | Association and category spotting |
| Strands | A theme clue and a letter grid | Theme words and the theme-naming spangram | Visual search and theme inference |
The comparison is about the puzzles’ documented mechanics, not a measured ranking of difficulty or player preference. Connections explicitly includes category overlap as a challenge; Wordle constrains guesses; Strands asks players to locate words spatially. Which feels hardest depends on whether deduction, word associations, or scanning a grid is the less familiar task.
