Apple tests iPhone designs throughout development against scenarios such as drops, vibration, pressure, abrasives, UV exposure and contact with liquids. Those controlled tests do not make an iPhone waterproof: resistance can decline with wear or impact, and Apple excludes liquid damage from its one-year limited warranty. If an iPhone needs service, you can choose Apple, an Apple-authorized or qualifying independent provider, or—if your model and country are supported—Self Service Repair.
How Apple tests iPhone durability
Apple says its Reliability Testing Lab evaluates designs throughout development, from early prototypes through launch. The company reports that it tests tens of thousands of prototype devices each year. Its scenarios are intended to represent customer exposure, not just one dramatic drop: they include liquids, foods, skincare products, intense UV light, abrasives, vibration, strain from sitting, and accidental drops. Apple describes its approach in the 2025 Environmental Progress Report as assessing designs against its durability standards.

Liquid testing uses different equipment for different exposures. Apple says a swing-arm nozzle tests spray or splash conditions associated with IPX3 and IPX4, while a pressurized vessel tests immersion conditions associated with IPX7 and IPX8. These are controlled laboratory tests of specified conditions; they are not evidence that every device will remain sealed in every real-world situation.

Adhesives, seals and gaskets help limit liquid ingress, but can make opening and repairing a device more complex. In its June 2024 Longevity by Design paper, Apple said improved liquid-ingress protection decreased repair rates by 75% with iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus. That figure applies to those models and Apple’s reported repair-rate comparison; it is not a general repair-rate reduction for every iPhone. Apple says it considers the longevity benefit of the protection worthwhile despite the added repair complexity.

Is an iPhone waterproof after a few years?
No iPhone should be treated as permanently waterproof. Apple describes supported iPhones as water-resistant under specific test conditions, and says resistance may decrease through normal wear or after an impact. An IP rating describes performance in a controlled test, not a guarantee against liquid damage over the life of a phone.
Ratings and test limits vary by model. For example, Apple’s 2023 environmental report lists IP67 protection at a maximum depth of 1 metre for up to 30 minutes for iPhone 7 and iPhone X, and IP68 protection at a maximum depth of 6 metres for up to 30 minutes for iPhone 14, under controlled laboratory conditions. These examples do not establish the rating of a newer or different model. Check Apple’s current model-specific technical specifications or support information for your iPhone rather than carrying an older rating forward.

What Apple advises against
- Swimming or bathing with an iPhone, or intentionally submerging it.
- Exposing it to pressurized or high-velocity water.
- Using it in a sauna or steam room.
- Disassembling it in an attempt to improve or restore its liquid resistance.
Apple’s guidance also means that a phone surviving one splash or dunk does not establish that it is safe to repeat the exposure. Avoid relying on the rating as permission to expose the device to water.
Does Apple warranty cover water damage?
Apple states that service for liquid damage is not covered by the Apple One-Year Limited Warranty. That is the limited-warranty position; the cited statement does not establish what a separate protection plan or local consumer-protection law may cover. Check the terms that apply to your plan and location if you have additional coverage.

iPhones have liquid-contact indicators. Apple says they are normally white or silver and turn fully red after contact with water or a water-containing liquid. Normal humidity and temperature within the device’s environmental requirements do not activate them. An indicator can help identify liquid contact, but it does not change the warranty terms.
Which iPhone repair route should you choose?
Apple identifies four service routes: Apple Stores, Apple Authorized Service Providers, Independent Repair Providers and Self Service Repair. The best fit depends on whether you want Apple’s service process, need a nearby professional, or have the experience to do the work yourself. Availability, appointment access and pricing can vary by place and repair.

Apple says genuine parts are designed and tested for safety, security and performance. Used genuine parts may perform similarly, but Apple warns that prior use or modification can create unknown variation in quality. Apple says repairs using used parts are not covered by Apple warranty or AppleCare. Ask what parts a provider intends to install and what coverage it offers for its work.

Yes, but Self Service Repair is aimed at people with experience repairing complex electronic devices, not casual users looking for a simple opening kit. Apple supplies repair manuals, genuine parts and tools for eligible models in supported regions. The exact process depends on the model and repair; some jobs involve delicate components, calibration, and careful removal and replacement of adhesive seals.

A third-party iPhone repair toolkit can help a skilled hobbyist with a supported task, but a kit does not make every repair appropriate for DIY. Before buying tools, identify the exact iPhone model and repair procedure. Depending on the job, the required equipment may include specific driver bits, picks, suction tools and replacement adhesive. Tool quality, part compatibility and battery handling are important considerations. Opening a phone can compromise its seals; neither a toolkit nor a completed repair guarantees restored factory water resistance or Apple warranty coverage.
