Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsAPI remoting lets software ask a service running in another process or on another machine to perform an operation. Remote procedure call (RPC) is one model for doing this: client code invokes an operation through an interface, while RPC software carries the request to the server and returns a result or error.
How does a remote procedure call work? It can look like an ordinary procedure call in code, but it is not an ordinary local call. The server runs in a separate address space and security domain, and the network can fail independently of either side. Binding, compatibility, error handling, and security are therefore part of making a remote call work—not guarantees supplied by the word “RPC.”

What API remoting means
API remoting is communication with an application programming interface whose operations are performed outside the caller’s local execution environment. In the RPC model, a client asks a remote service to execute a named operation and receives a result or error. The Open Group describes the programming abstraction this way: “The RPC paradigm makes remote calls an extension of the familiar local procedure call mechanism.” That is an abstraction for the programmer, not a promise that remote calls behave like local ones.

Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →RPC is one way to design an API; not every API is an RPC API. An API can expose operations, resources, messages, or other interaction patterns. The term “remoting” describes crossing a process or machine boundary, while RPC describes an operation-oriented way to make that interaction.

How a remote procedure call works
- The client selects an operation. Its code calls an operation defined by a remote interface, supplying the parameters expected by that interface.
- The RPC system identifies and binds to the service. It needs enough information to locate the target and determine which interface and operation are intended. Depending on the system, this may involve a name lookup, endpoint resolution, or an existing binding.
- The request is conveyed to the server. RPC support encodes call information and uses a runtime and transport to send it. The wire format, transport, binding method, and generated support code differ among RPC systems.
- The server handles the operation. The service receives the request, checks and processes it, and produces a result or an error.
- The response returns to the client. The RPC system associates the response with the call so the client can receive the result or handle the reported failure.
This describes the general model, not a universal implementation sequence. The Open Group’s DCE 1.1 RPC API and model specifications and the ONC RPC protocol specification, RFC 5531 describe particular RPC approaches.
Interfaces, binding, and compatibility
An RPC interface defines the operations available to callers and the parameters those operations accept. A client must identify both the intended service and the operation; the communication mechanism must also establish or use a binding that provides the information needed to reach a server. Some systems identify interfaces and versions explicitly, while naming and endpoint resolution may be handled separately.

Client and server need compatible expectations about the interface and protocol. A version mismatch, changed parameter definition, or incompatible encoding can keep a call from succeeding or cause the other side to interpret it differently than intended. Interface versioning and compatibility rules are specific to the RPC system, so they should be checked in that system’s documentation rather than assumed from RPC in general.

What changes when the call is remote
A local procedure call normally runs within the caller’s process and execution environment. An RPC handler runs in a different address space and may be in a different security domain. That separation introduces failure modes that a local call does not have in the same way: the server can stop, the communication link can break, name resolution or binding can fail, or client and server can disagree about the protocol.

A particularly important case is an ambiguous outcome. If the client sends a request but does not receive a response, it may be unable to tell whether the server never received the request, received it but did not finish, or completed the operation and lost the response. A timeout tells the client that it has not received a response in time; it does not, by itself, prove that the operation did not happen.
Timeouts, retries, and operation safety
RPC does not automatically provide application-level reliability or exactly-once execution. RFC 5531 states that the ONC RPC protocol itself does not implement reliability; the transport and application determine how communication failures are handled. Other RPC systems may supply additional behavior, but their guarantees depend on the chosen framework, configuration, and operation.

Retries require care when completion is uncertain. Repeating a read may be harmless in a given application, while repeating a payment, message send, or other state-changing operation may produce a second effect if the first request already completed. Whether an operation is safe to retry depends on its semantics and safeguards, not merely on the RPC mechanism. Design callers to use appropriate timeouts and retry rules, and make repeated requests safe where the application requires that behavior.

Security is a design and configuration choice
Crossing a machine boundary can expose server resources, so an RPC deployment must address who is communicating and what they are allowed to do. The Open Group’s DCE RPC model describes services for authenticating clients and servers, authorizing access to server resources, and providing varying degrees of cryptographic protection. Their presence and strength depend on the implementation and how it is configured; RPC alone does not make a connection secure.

Microsoft’s RPC-over-HTTP documentation gives one vendor-specific deployment example: an RPC Proxy can authenticate and validate requests and perform access checks before forwarding them to an RPC server. This is an architecture used in that Microsoft context, not a general feature of every RPC system.
RPC compared with REST and SOAP
REST, SOAP, and RPC are often introduced as different API styles. A U.S. Department of Health and Human Services presentation describes RPC at a high level as a request-response pattern in which a client asks a remote server to execute a procedure. That is useful orientation, not a definitive classification of every API or a current survey of how widely each style is used.
| Design question | What to examine |
|---|---|
| Interaction model | Is the interface organized around operations to invoke, resources to address, or another pattern? |
| Interface and transport | Which operation definitions, message formats, and transport conventions does the implementation specify? |
| Compatibility | How does it identify interface versions and handle changes to operations or parameters? |
| Security and failures | What authentication, authorization, protection, timeout, and retry behavior does the actual implementation provide? |
These questions are more useful than assuming one style is always faster, safer, or simpler. Those properties depend on the concrete design and implementation.
When the RPC model is useful to understand
RPC is a useful mental model when client code invokes a well-defined operation on a service and expects a result. The key is to retain both halves of the model: an operation-oriented interface can make remote work straightforward to express, but the operation still crosses a network boundary with its own binding, compatibility, security, and failure concerns. For framework-specific choices, consult the current official documentation for the RPC system being used.
