Current guidance does not support treating every store scanner as universally harmless or universally dangerous.
The 2004 headline “Anti-theft technology aids diabetics” referred to a proposed film implant intended to reduce painful blood sampling. The accessible record does not identify the implant’s material, sensing method, inventor, clinical results or commercial status. Today, the practical issue for most users is different: how security gates and metal detectors interact with wearable diabetes technology.

What the 2004 “anti-theft technology” story actually described
Chemistry World published Stuart Nathan’s article Anti-theft technology aids diabetics on 1 August 2004. Its subtitle was “Film implants could end painful blood sampling.” That wording points to a concept in which a thin implant would help monitor glucose and reduce repeated finger-stick sampling.

Those details should not be filled in from assumptions about modern CGMs or implantable sensors. The historical item is best understood as a report of a proposed technology, not evidence that retail anti-theft systems improve diabetes treatment today.

Modern anti-theft equipment matters to a different question. Retail gates, inventory-control systems and some handheld scanners create electromagnetic environments. A pump or CGM may respond differently depending on its electronics, software, orientation, distance from the field and exposure time.
What testing says about pumps, CGMs and electromagnetic security systems
Ralph M. Herkert reported electromagnetic-environment testing in a 2008 study in the Journal of Diabetes Science and Technology. At the Georgia Tech Research Institute Medical Device Test Center, researchers moved insulin pumps and CGMs through fields generated by production security and logistical systems.
The abstract described the results for the tested devices as encouraging, but it also emphasized two limits: only a small number of manufacturers had been studied, and further testing was warranted as device functionality changed. That means the study cannot certify every pump, sensor or store gate. A result for one model is not a guarantee for another model released years later.

In practical terms, electromagnetic compatibility is a device-and-environment question. Two pumps can share the same basic purpose yet use different radios, sensors, alarms and control software. A gate can also produce a different field from a handheld metal detector or a walk-through security arch. The relevant variables are the manufacturer’s instructions, the type of scanner, how close you are and how long you remain exposed.

Current manufacturer and regulator instructions
Official instructions are more useful than a generic rule about “scanners.” The following examples show why users should check the manual and safety page for their own model.
| Device or evidence | Anti-theft or detector guidance | Distance or exposure detail | Other restrictions and cautions |
|---|---|---|---|
| Medtronic MiniMed 780G insulin pump | The U.S. Food and Drug Administration review says not to use the pump or additional system devices next to other electrical equipment, explicitly including anti-theft systems. | The same review recommends a 12-inch (30 cm) separation from common radio-frequency emitters. | The review separately warns about MRI, CT, X-ray, strong magnetic fields and full-body scanners. Those hazards are not interchangeable with a retail anti-theft gate. |
| twiist automated insulin-delivery system | The manufacturer says retail anti-theft detectors may affect pump accuracy or trigger an alarm. It advises walking through at a normal pace and avoiding standing in the detector. | No universal clearance distance is given in the quoted safety instruction; use the system’s current instructions for any specified distance. | Its guidance says handheld or walk-through metal detectors may be used nearby, but prolonged exposure should be avoided. It also advises keeping backup insulin therapy and emergency supplies. |
| Other insulin pumps and CGMs | Not established by the cited evidence. Follow the exact model’s labeling; do not transfer another manufacturer’s clearance or restriction. | Not stated without a model-specific manual. | Compatibility, alarm behavior and scanner restrictions can change with a hardware or software revision. |
The MiniMed 780G language is deliberately conservative: “Do not use the MiniMed 780G insulin pump or additional system devices next to other electrical equipment… This includes… anti-theft systems…” The 12-inch (30 cm) recommendation applies to common RF emitters in that review; it is not a universal distance that makes every scanner safe for every diabetes device.
The twiist statement is also specific. “Retail anti-theft detectors may affect pump accuracy or trigger an alarm.” Its operational instruction is to keep moving at a normal pace rather than pause inside the gate. A metal-detector allowance in that guidance does not erase other warnings for magnets, imaging equipment or prolonged exposure.
Can you walk through a store security gate with a pump or CGM?
Usually, users should follow their model’s instructions and pass through normally rather than lingering. For a system whose labeling warns about anti-theft equipment, avoid standing between the pedestals or repeatedly walking back and forth through them. If the manual requires a particular clearance or avoidance procedure, that instruction takes priority over general retail practice.

Before leaving home
- Identify every device you wear. Note the pump model, CGM model, transmitter and any phone, receiver or controller that communicates with them. Instructions can differ between the pump and its accessories.
- Read the current safety section. Look specifically for “electromagnetic compatibility,” “anti-theft,” “security systems,” “metal detector,” “RF,” “magnetic fields” and “full-body scanner.” Use the edition supplied with your device or the manufacturer’s current safety page.
- Check your supplies. Carry the backup insulin-delivery method and monitoring equipment recommended for your therapy. The twiist safety guidance lists glucose-monitoring supplies, fast-acting glucose tablets, spare insulin, infusion sets and a charged pump battery as examples of emergency supplies.
- Plan for an interruption. Know how you would check glucose and deliver insulin if an alarm, communication failure or pump problem occurred. A backup plan should be usable without the store’s equipment or a data connection.
At the entrance
- Tell staff when appropriate. If a guard asks about an alarm or you are unsure which scanner is in use, explain that you wear prescribed diabetes technology and ask for the store’s alternative screening procedure.
- Keep the device in its normal position. Do not hold a pump against a gate, place a controller on a security pedestal or deliberately test whether an alarm will sound.
- Walk at a normal pace. This follows the twiist instruction for retail anti-theft detectors and minimizes dwell time in the field.
- Do not linger or make repeated passes. If a gate alarms, step away from it and let staff resolve the merchandise alarm instead of remaining in the detection zone.
What to do if a detector alarms or the device behaves oddly
If the store alarm sounds
An alarm does not prove that your pump or CGM has been damaged, and a silent passage does not prove that every device function is unaffected. Move away from the gate, tell staff you use medical equipment and follow the device’s troubleshooting instructions. Do not allow a staff member to run a handheld wand directly over the pump or sensor unless your manufacturer specifically permits that procedure.
If the pump reports an alarm
Read the pump’s displayed message and follow the prescribed response. Check the infusion site, tubing, reservoir and battery only if your model’s instructions call for those checks. If insulin delivery may have been interrupted, use your established backup method and monitor glucose according to your clinician’s plan. Seek urgent medical help for symptoms of severe hypoglycemia, diabetic ketoacidosis or another emergency.
If CGM readings look implausible
Treat an unexpected reading as a potential measurement problem until confirmed. Use a blood-glucose meter when your treatment plan and device instructions recommend confirmation, especially before correcting a high or low value that does not match symptoms. Keep monitoring after leaving the store; a single alarm or unusual reading is not enough to diagnose permanent damage.
Report repeated events
Record the device model, software version if shown, scanner type, approximate distance, time spent near it, displayed alarms and any confirmed glucose values. Contact the manufacturer or clinical support channel with those details. Repeated reports matter because electromagnetic performance can change as devices and security systems evolve.

Anti-theft gates are not the same as MRI, CT or airport imaging equipment
Retail anti-theft pedestals are one kind of electromagnetic environment. MRI scanners use extremely strong magnetic fields; CT and X-ray systems use ionizing radiation; full-body security scanners use their own operating conditions. A pump manual may prohibit one category while giving limited instructions for another.
Do not infer that permission to pass a retail gate permits MRI, CT, X-ray, a strong magnet or a full-body scanner. Conversely, a warning about MRI does not by itself describe what will happen at a shop entrance. Use the exact restriction for the equipment you are facing and tell the operator that you wear an insulin pump or CGM.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Why “safe for all devices” is not a defensible claim
The 2008 testing is valuable because it examined real pumps and CGMs in security-related fields, but it was not a universal certification program. The study covered only a subset of manufacturers, and its authors called for additional testing as functionality changed. Newer devices can add wireless communication, automated dosing, predictive alarms or different sensor architectures.

Device labeling is therefore the controlling source for a particular model. If a manual is silent, that silence is not proof of safety; contact the manufacturer or diabetes-care team before deliberately exposing the device to a scanner. Do not rely on an internet anecdote involving a different pump, CGM, phone app or store layout.

Keeping diabetes management resilient while traveling
Security screening is only one reason to carry a contingency kit. A depleted battery, damaged infusion set, lost controller or communication outage can also interrupt therapy. Keep supplies in accessible carry-on luggage rather than a checked bag when traveling, and store them according to their temperature requirements.
- Bring the insulin and delivery supplies specified by your treatment plan.
- Carry a glucose meter, strips or other approved confirmation method if your plan uses one.
- Pack fast-acting glucose for suspected hypoglycemia.
- Bring spare infusion sets, reservoirs or sensors when prescribed and a charged pump battery or charging method.
- Know the temporary backup procedure taught by your diabetes team, including when to call for help.
These supplies do not make an anti-theft gate harmless; they reduce the consequences if a device alarm or interruption occurs.
What the headline means for patients now
The 2004 film-implant idea and today’s scanner question should not be merged. The former was a proposed approach to reducing painful blood sampling, with technical and clinical details unavailable in the accessible record. The latter concerns electromagnetic exposure around commercially used pumps and CGMs.
