Yes, an Android browser may send text to a search provider before you press Enter. That can happen when search suggestions are enabled: the browser requests autocomplete suggestions as you type. Submitting the search is a separate step, with its own request for results. Which information is sent, and to whom, depends on the browser, its settings, and the selected provider.
What happens before and after you press Enter
An Android browser’s address bar can serve both as a place to enter a website address and as a search box. It may offer suggestions from local browsing history, the selected search engine, or both. Suggestions from a provider can require a network request while you are still typing.

Typing and suggestion requests
In Chrome for Android, Google documents that when “Improve search suggestions” is enabled, text entered in the address bar and contextual information such as your IP address and relevant cookies are sent to the default search engine for autocomplete. Chrome may also preconnect to the default engine to make suggestions and results faster. If Google is the default provider and “Make searches and browsing better” is enabled, Google says the current page URL is also sent to improve suggestions. These details are settings-dependent; they are not a promise that every browser sends every character in every configuration. Google Chrome Help: Manage search engines and search suggestions on Android.
Submitting a search
When you press Enter or tap a suggestion, the browser sends a completed search request to the provider. That is distinct from any earlier autocomplete requests. If you choose a provider other than Google in Chrome, Google says that provider’s privacy policy governs its suggestion requests and search queries. The policy that applies therefore depends partly on which provider receives each request. Google Chrome Help.

Browser and search provider have different roles
The browser controls how the address bar works and may use locally stored information, such as browsing history, to suggest destinations. A search provider receives requests sent to it and handles them under its own policy. Mozilla’s Firefox privacy notice says suggestion requests—including real-time query text and technical data—are sent directly to the user’s search provider. Mozilla Firefox Privacy Notice.
Changing the default search engine can change which company receives autocomplete and submitted searches. It does not, by itself, explain all data handled by the browser, websites you visit, account services, or Android. To compare privacy meaningfully, identify the specific flow—suggestions, submitted searches, or another activity—rather than treating browser privacy and search privacy as one setting.

How the controls and disclosures differ by browser
Chrome for Android
Chrome’s Android help describes search-suggestion controls in its search-engine settings. The documented behavior includes sending entered text and contextual information to the default provider when “Improve search suggestions” is enabled. Google-specific behavior also depends on “Make searches and browsing better.” Settings labels and behavior can vary by version, so check the controls on your own device rather than assuming a universal default. Samsung Internet
Samsung’s US privacy notice includes browsing history, including search keywords, among information associated with Samsung Internet. It also says privacy and security settings let users manage sharing of some device data with Samsung and third parties. This description is specific to the US notice and should not be assumed to state the precise legal terms for every region. Samsung US Privacy Policy.
Samsung’s browser policy documentation separately describes the URL used for a default search and the URL used for suggestions. A suggestion URL can include a {searchTerms} placeholder that is replaced with the user’s terms. This explains a configuration mechanism; it does not establish which provider or setting is used on every Samsung Internet installation. What a privacy-oriented search provider’s policy tells you
DuckDuckGo’s policy says that visiting its search engine or other websites automatically sends some information, including your IP address, browser type, and language. A provider’s statement about query history is not the same as a claim that no connection information reaches it. The policy describes what the provider says it handles; it is not independent verification of the provider’s systems. DuckDuckGo Privacy Policy.

A practical checklist for comparing setups
- Check whether search suggestions are enabled and whether they are requested as you type.
- Identify which provider receives suggestion requests and which receives searches you submit.
- Find out whether suggestions can also come from local browsing history, open tabs, or other device data.
- Review account, personalization, and improvement settings that may affect the request.
- Read the applicable provider privacy notice for query handling and connection information.
- Check the notice’s geographic scope and whether its instructions match your browser version or distribution.
These checks reveal the data flows a browser’s controls and provider policies describe. The available official documentation does not establish a consistent cross-provider comparison of query-retention periods, so it does not support ranking these providers by retention.
