Choose Mac menu bar metrics to answer a specific question at a glance: CPU load for processor demand, memory pressure and swap for memory constraints, disk capacity or activity for storage issues, network speed for current transfers, and temperature for thermal context. Keep the persistent display compact; use the monitor’s expanded view or Activity Monitor to investigate what a warning means.
Choose metrics by the problem you want to spot
A menu bar monitor is most useful as an overview or alert layer, not as a full diagnosis. Pick one or two readings that could signal a slowdown, low storage, unexpected transfer, or thermal change. A graph helps when recent direction matters; a number is easier to compare with a threshold. Avoid crowding the bar with a summary and several detailed readings unless you routinely need that detail.

CPU: Is the processor busy?
A utilization number or compact graph can show whether processor demand is elevated. Apple’s Activity Monitor CPU guide separates System, User, and Idle percentages and provides current and recent views. Apple defines System as “The percentage of CPU capability that’s being used by processes that belong to macOS.” A menu bar reading can flag load; use the detailed app view to find which processes are responsible.
Memory: Is memory becoming a constraint?
For troubleshooting, memory pressure and swap provide more useful context than a used-memory figure alone. A high used-memory reading does not by itself establish that the Mac is short of usable memory. Stats documents memory pressure, used and free RAM, and swap; iStat Menus documents pressure, compressed memory, swap, history, and top memory-consuming apps. Check the expanded view or Apple’s Activity Monitor memory guide when you need to interpret the reading.

The Class A touchscreen supports precise 5-point touch for drawing, tapping and swiping. Built-in dual 1W speakers and a 3.5mm AUX jack let you stream Spotify music with or without headphones.
- ANODIZED ALUMINUM BODY, HIDEAWAY MAGNETIC STAND | The scratch-resistant, fingerprint-resistant anodized aluminum back keeps this vertical mini monitor looking new, and the 90-degree rotating stand hides inside it for a clean profile. Flip it out to switch from landscape charts to a narrow portrait chat screen, and the strong magnet snaps the stand back into its hidden slot.
- RICH PORTS, ONE-CABLE USB-C OR HDMI HOOKUP | Messy wiring is the main cause of cluttered desks - the full-function USB-C port sends video (DisplayPort Alt Mode), touch data and 5V power in one cable. HDMI, DC 5V and GPIO wiring options fit different devices, and this secondary PC display is used for computers, Raspberry Pi, Windows, Linux and Android systems without drivers.
- WIDELY USED FROM GAMING RIG TO RASPBERRY PI | Hook it to a desktop, laptop, Raspberry Pi or mini computer and it becomes a smart temp and status monitor inside your PC case (AIDA64), an ultrawide gaming side panel for Discord chat, a Stream Deck launcher, a portable travel display on the go, or a menu screen at the counter. One small bar screen, endless ways to stay informed.
Disk: Capacity or activity?
These answer different questions. Storage capacity (used and free space) helps you notice a nearly full disk; read/write activity shows whether data is currently being accessed. Choose the one that matches your concern rather than treating them as interchangeable. Stats and iStat Menus document both storage-usage and disk-activity features.
Network: Current speed or total traffic?
Upload and download rates show current throughput. Cumulative data answers how much has moved over time; per-app breakdown can help identify which application is using bandwidth. Stats documents upload/download speeds and total data, while iStat Menus documents current bandwidth, history, and per-app breakdown. Use a rate for an at-a-glance transfer check, and open the detailed view when you need attribution or history.

Temperature: Is there useful thermal context?
A sensor reading can help you see whether a demanding task coincides with elevated sensor values, but do not assume a displayed sensor corresponds to one CPU or GPU core. The Stats project README says, “CPU/GPU sensors are simply thermal zones (sensors) on the CPU/GPU.” It also notes that Apple changes sensor keys with each new SoC. Sensor names and availability therefore vary by hardware and software; treat them as contextual readings, not precise per-core temperatures.

- Name the event. Write down what you want to catch: processor load, memory pressure, low storage, unexpected network use, or thermal behavior.
- Choose the smallest useful set. Select one or two indicators that can signal that event. Add detail only if you routinely act on it.
- Choose a display form. Use a number when threshold recognition matters and a graph when recent direction matters. Stats documents configurable chart, number, gauge, and dot widgets. iStat Menus lets users choose what appears in the menu bar versus its opened menu and offers a combined item.
- Investigate outside the bar. Open the monitor’s detail panel or Activity Monitor to inspect processes and history. Apple documents process context and additional investigation tools in its Activity Monitor User Guide.
- Recheck after changes. A new Mac, macOS release, monitor version, or workload can change which sensors are available or useful.

| iStat Menus 7 | The US App Store listing describes CPU/GPU, memory, disk, network, and sensor monitoring, configurable menu bar and menu visibility, and a combined menu bar item. The listing showed US$11.99 when reviewed; price can change. See the US App Store listing. | Is its breadth and display control worth the current price? Account for sensor, OS, and overhead limits
Stats’ README says Apple changes sensor keys with each new SoC, so sensor labels and availability can vary across hardware. The project also identifies Sensors and Bluetooth among its most inefficient modules and says disabling them can reduce CPU usage and power impact in some cases; that is the developer’s documentation, not an independent comparative measurement.
The Stats README documents macOS 12 and newer and says beta macOS versions are unsupported. It also says macOS 26 adds a System Settings > Menu Bar permission for showing Stats items, and that Wi-Fi network names require Location Services permission. System controls can change between releases, so check the project’s current instructions and your macOS settings if an item does not appear.
