In the PCI Security Standards Council (PCI SSC) program, an Internal Security Assessor (ISA) is an employee of a qualifying ISA Sponsor Company trained to assess that organization’s PCI DSS compliance internally. The ISA helps identify compliance issues, recommend remediation, and coordinate with a Qualified Security Assessor (QSA). It is a company-sponsored, PCI-specific qualification—not a general cybersecurity license or automatic substitute for an external assessor.
What an ISA does
PCI SSC’s ISA program trains employees to improve their organization’s understanding of the Payment Card Industry Data Security Standard (PCI DSS) and the consistency of its internal self-assessments. An ISA performs assessment work within their own organization, identifies compliance issues, recommends solutions, and can act as a liaison with external PCI auditors and QSAs. PCI SSC describes the ISA program as supporting internal assessment quality and interactions with QSAs.
The title is specific to PCI SSC’s program. “Internal security assessor” is not a universally standardized role across cybersecurity, and the ISA qualification is tied to employment at a participating sponsor company.

Who can become an ISA
The employer must qualify as an ISA Sponsor Company before it can sponsor employees for the program. PCI SSC identifies experienced internal auditors and internal security or risk-assessment professionals at relevant payment-sector organizations—including retailers, financial institutions, acquiring banks, and processors—as the intended audience. An unaffiliated individual should not treat the ISA qualification as a portable credential they can pursue independently of a sponsor. See PCI SSC’s ISA qualification information for current sponsor and eligibility details.
How an ISA differs from a QSA
| Aspect | ISA | QSA |
|---|---|---|
| Organizational position | An employee sponsored by their own qualifying organization. | An external assessor who works with an organization on PCI assessment activity. |
| Primary role described by PCI SSC | Supports internal PCI DSS assessment, readiness, remediation recommendations, and internal understanding. | Performs external assessment work and may work with the organization during its assessment. |
| Relationship | Can help coordinate the organization’s interactions with a QSA. | Provides an external assessment relationship; the ISA supports, rather than automatically replaces, that role. |
PCI SSC describes coordination between these roles, not blanket interchangeability. Whether a particular entity needs an external assessment or which person may complete or sign a deliverable depends on the applicable PCI SSC, payment-brand, and acquirer requirements. Do not assume ISA status alone authorizes an employee to replace a QSA.

Training and qualification sequence
- Confirm the employer’s sponsor status. The company must qualify as an ISA Sponsor Company and sponsor the employee.
- Complete PCI Fundamentals. PCI SSC’s current ISA training description lists a five-hour PCI Fundamentals course and exam as the prerequisite.
- Take the ISA course and exam. The program covers PCI DSS requirements and testing procedures, reporting, compensating controls, and remediation-related content. PCI SSC lists instructor-led and online eLearning formats. Consult the official ISA training page for current formats and schedules, which may change.
Renewal and checking current status
PCI SSC says ISA employees must re-certify every 12 months to continue as an ISA for their Sponsor Company. Because training requirements, schedules, and program listings can change, check the current program information and ISA listing before relying on a person’s active standing.
