AI can sort customer complaints, but only within the limits of its categories and training examples. When a complaint does not fit—or contains several issues—the safe response is to flag uncertainty and send it for human review, not let a confident guess decide where it goes. The available sources do not establish what “Overflowing” referred to in the original anecdote, so the word is best treated as an example of an unresolved classification problem, not a verified system failure.
What AI complaint sorting actually does
Complaint handling has at least two separate decisions: first, whether an interaction is a complaint at all; second, what kind of complaint it is and what should happen next. A system that gets the first decision right can still mislabel the issue or route it to the wrong team.

In an AWS design for financial contact centers, a supervisor agent first identifies confirmed complaints and routes them to a specialist complaint agent. That agent uses criteria in a configurable knowledge base to assign a category, severity and routing group. AWS says, “The Complaints Agent uses LLM reasoning guided by classification criteria stored in the Amazon Bedrock Knowledge Base.” The architecture also describes transcript redaction, access controls, audit logging and human approval before recommended actions execute. These are features of that particular design, not inherent safeguards in every AI classifier. AWS for Industries

Why “Overflowing” is a useful warning, not a known result
The source material available for this topic does not identify what “Overflowing” described, which categories the system used, or what its classifier did. It would be misleading to claim the word was a specific complaint type or that a particular tool failed on it. The practical question is broader: what should a workflow do when a customer’s words do not map cleanly to its labels?

A category is not merely a description. It can trigger a team assignment, urgency level or follow-up action. That makes the taxonomy a business rule as well as a vocabulary. If labels are vague, overlap, or omit common concerns, even a fluent model can produce an operationally wrong answer.
Published accuracy figures are tied to their tests
Reported performance varies with the task, domain, data and evaluation method. The following results illustrate why a score should not be treated as a forecast for another organization:

| Example | Reported result | What it measures and does not establish |
|---|---|---|
| AWS complaint-classification demonstration, 2026 | 97.5% complaint-identification accuracy and a 2.5% false-negative rate | AWS reports these figures for a synthetic dataset of 50 call transcripts covering five complaint categories and routine non-complaint interactions. They do not establish expected performance on a different company’s real complaints. AWS for Industries |
| Dutch water-utility case study, 2022 | Test-dataset accuracy 0.825, precision 0.802 and F1-score 0.79 | These are intent-classification results for one utility’s Dutch-language complaint data and domain-specific intents; they are not directly comparable with the AWS demonstration. Tian and Vertommen et al., Water |
The examples differ in domain, data and approach, so ranking one against the other would not be meaningful. A single aggregate score can also conceal uneven performance: a model may do well on frequent categories while missing rare or poorly defined ones.
What happens when a complaint fits no category?
The water-utility study reports that uncategorizable cases often concerned minor topics missing from the taxonomy and represented by too few examples. It also did not model messages containing multiple topics. Those limitations matter in ordinary service work: customers may combine a main complaint with a secondary issue, use unfamiliar language, or describe a problem the organization has not anticipated. Rank #3
- Digital Stereo Sound: Fine-tuned drivers provide enhanced digital audio for calls, meetings, music, and more
- Rotating Noise-Canceling Mic: Minimizes unwanted background noise for clear conversations; the rotating boom arm can be tucked out of the way when not in use
- Handy Inline Controls: Simple inline controls on the headset cable let you adjust the volume or mute calls without disruption
- USB-C Plug-and-Play: Simply plug the USB-C cable into your computer, including MacBook Neo laptops, and you're ready to talk or listen without installing software.
- Padded Comfort: Comfortable USB C headphones with adjustable headband feature swivel-mounted, leatherette ear cushions for hours of comfort
A sound workflow makes room for those cases. Depending on the business need, it can use an “unclear” or “other” label, allow multiple labels, or send the ticket to a person. “Other” should not become a hidden dumping ground: frequent use is evidence to inspect what is missing or confusing in the taxonomy.
How to route an ambiguous ticket safely
- Define what each label controls. Decide whether the model is identifying complaint status, issue category, urgency, sentiment or escalation. Keep these as separate fields when they lead to different decisions rather than compressing them into one label.
- Set a confidence policy. Choose a threshold for automatic routing and send below-threshold cases to a human triage queue. State the suspected issue and uncertainty so the reviewer can decide, rather than presenting a guess as fact. Double Logic
- Keep a human path for high-impact cases. Even a high model confidence may not justify automatic action where a wrong route could delay an urgent response. Use approval gates appropriate to the consequence of the decision.
- Preserve evidence for review. Retain the original complaint and enough explanation or logs to understand why a label and route were proposed. The AWS architecture describes rationale, trace logs and complaint evidence as part of its approach. AWS for Industries
- Review misroutes and uncategorizable cases. Reassignment patterns can indicate ambiguous definitions, missing labels or examples that do not represent real incoming messages. Use those cases to refine the taxonomy and test the revised version. Double Logic
How to evaluate a classifier before relying on it
Start with representative historical complaints, not a handful of easy examples. Have people apply the intended labels, compare the model’s proposed decisions with that reference, and inspect errors by category. Include routine non-complaint interactions if the system must first decide whether a complaint exists. A useful evaluation asks not only “How often is it right?” but also which mistakes it makes and what those mistakes would trigger.

- Check category-level results so rare or confusing labels are not masked by an overall score.
- Test examples with missing-category and multi-topic complaints, not only clean single-issue messages.
- Review false negatives separately: a complaint incorrectly treated as routine may never reach the complaint workflow.
- Use the same data and definitions that reflect the intended language, channel and business process.
- Keep labels as draft recommendations until observed results justify more automation; do not assume one model’s accuracy transfers to another dataset. Tweaknook
Choosing an implementation pattern
The documented examples show different approaches, not a head-to-head product comparison. AWS describes an LLM-agent architecture with a configurable taxonomy and explicit controls for a regulated financial contact-center context. The Dutch utility study describes domain-specific natural-language processing applied to Dutch complaint text and intents. The right fit depends on the organization’s data, taxonomy, integration needs and ability to review uncertain outputs; neither example establishes a universal solution. The study’s authors specifically caution that no generic solution applies in all circumstances. Water, 2022
