The closest demonstrated technology is a laboratory aluminium–nitrate (Al–NO3) electrochemical cell. An aluminium plate is oxidised at the anode while nitrate is reduced at a copper, nickel or CuNi cathode; ammonia is then detected in the electrolyte. A separate 2025 chemical-looping study converted aluminium dross into ammonia at 700 °C. Both results show useful chemistry, but neither is a rechargeable product or a replacement for Haber–Bosch today.
What has actually been demonstrated
The most direct evidence is the 2025 Advanced Materials report titled “High-Yield Ammonia Production from Al-Nitrate Battery via Anodic Al&NO3− Spontaneous Reaction Driven Cathodic Nitrate Reduction Reaction.” The researchers assembled a cell with an aluminium plate anode and a cathode made from a CuNi alloy, copper or nickel. During operation, aluminium oxidation supplied electrons and nitrate reduction consumed them. Ammonia was measured in the electrolyte after the test.

That wording matters. The experiment is a reactive laboratory cell, not a battery sold for storing electricity. Its electrodes, electrolyte, nitrate feed and analytical procedure were selected to drive and quantify a chemical reaction. There is no evidence of a consumer Al–N battery that can be charged, discharged and used like a phone or electric-vehicle battery.
Aluminium dross is a different route
A related 2025 study in the Journal of Environmental Management used aluminium dross as a nitrogen carrier in a chemical-looping process. Dross is hazardous waste from aluminium processing and contains active aluminium together with nitrogen-bearing material. The reactor produced 2.32 × 10−3 mol NH3 per gram at 700 °C. Under the reported conditions, that yield was comparable to commercial aluminium nitride (AlN) and 10% higher than the commercial AlN benchmark.

Particle preparation had a large effect. Sorting dross to 0.075–0.15 mm increased ammonia yield 2.45 times relative to unsorted raw dross and 3.95 times relative to coarse 0.355–0.5 mm particles. This is a high-temperature chemical-looping result, not performance data for an electrochemical battery.
How an Al–NO3 cell makes ammonia
1. Aluminium supplies the electrons
At the anode, aluminium gives up electrons and enters the electrolyte as oxidised aluminium species. A simplified half-reaction is:
Al → Al3+ + 3e−
The actual dissolved aluminium chemistry depends on the electrolyte and pH, but the design principle is consistent: aluminium is consumed as the reducing electrode. It is therefore better understood as a chemical fuel in this experiment than as a permanently reusable battery electrode.

2. Nitrate is the nitrogen feedstock
Electrons travel through the external circuit to the cathode, where nitrate ions are reduced through a sequence of nitrogen intermediates. Hydrogen equivalents supplied by the electrolyte or another proton source combine with the reduced nitrogen to form ammonia. A schematic overall cathode step is:
NO3− + electrons + hydrogen equivalents → NH3 + H2O

This is a conceptual equation rather than a balanced recipe: the exact proton, water and electron counts vary with pH and the intermediate pathway. The important distinction is that the reported cell starts with nitrate. It does not directly split atmospheric nitrogen gas (N2) in the way many nitrogen-reduction proposals do.
3. Ammonia must be measured, not assumed
Nitrate reduction can produce several nitrogen compounds, so a current flowing through a cell does not by itself prove selective ammonia synthesis. In the Al–NO3 report, ammonia was quantified in the post-test electrolyte. A credible evaluation therefore needs a calibrated ammonia assay, controls that exclude contamination, and a nitrogen balance showing where the nitrate went.
How this differs from Haber–Bosch
Haber–Bosch combines nitrogen and hydrogen over an iron-based catalyst at high pressure and temperatures up to about 500 °C. The University of Bonn describes the conventional process as fossil-fuel intensive, largely because hydrogen is commonly made from fossil feedstocks and the synthesis loop requires substantial heat and compression.
An Al–NO3 cell changes the starting chemistry rather than simply making a smaller Haber–Bosch plant. It uses nitrate as the nitrogen source, aluminium as an electron donor and an electrolyte to provide the hydrogen equivalents needed to finish ammonia formation. Electricity can control the cathodic reaction, but the aluminium reactant is consumed.
| Approach | Nitrogen source | Hydrogen source | Typical operating description | Evidence and status |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Haber–Bosch | N2 gas | Hydrogen gas | High pressure; up to about 500 °C; iron catalyst | Established industrial process, described by the University of Bonn as fossil-fuel intensive |
| Al–NO3 cell | Nitrate (NO3−) in an electrolyte | Protons or other hydrogen equivalents in the cell | Laboratory electrochemical cell with aluminium anode and Cu, Ni or CuNi cathode | Ammonia measured after testing in a 2025 Advanced Materials study; no commercial product identified |
| Li- or Ca-mediated nitrogen reduction | N2 gas | Hydrogen oxidation or another managed proton source | Electrochemical metal-mediated pathway; continuous flow is needed for practical operation | Research-stage systems discussed in a Nature Energy perspective |
The comparison also prevents a common category error. A nitrate-fed cell could produce ammonia without the same N2-activation step required by direct nitrogen reduction, but nitrate itself has to be manufactured, transported or recovered. Its climate and cost advantages therefore depend on the nitrate source, aluminium production, electricity mix, electrolyte lifetime and waste treatment.

Where lithium- and calcium-mediated systems fit
The Nature Energy perspective places Al–NO3 chemistry alongside a different family of electrochemical ammonia systems that begin with nitrogen gas. Lithium- and calcium-mediated nitrogen reduction uses the metal to activate N2, after which hydrogen oxidation supplies the hydrogen needed for ammonia. The authors argue that continuous-flow operation is essential to avoid unsustainable proton sources and electrolyte oxidation.
Those design requirements are useful benchmarks for aluminium research even though the feedstock differs. A serious reactor comparison should report whether operation is batch or continuous, where hydrogen or protons come from, whether the solid-electrolyte interphase remains stable, how long electrodes last, the ammonia production rate, selectivity and energy efficiency.
What the available performance numbers mean
The 700 °C dross result
The dross figure of 2.32 × 10−3 mol NH3/g is a mass-specific yield measured at 700 °C in the 2025 chemical-looping study. It should not be converted into an electrical efficiency or compared directly with a battery’s watt-hours. The feed is a variable industrial waste, and the result depends on particle size, composition, reactor temperature and the treatment cycle.
The particle-size multipliers show why feed preparation is part of the process economics. Finer 0.075–0.15 mm material exposed more reactive surface than raw or 0.355–0.5 mm coarse particles. Grinding, sieving, dust control and safe handling would add equipment and energy in a commercial plant.
The 25% efficiency figure belongs to a related lithium system
The University of Bonn reported about 25% energy efficiency for its lithium-mediated ammonia system in 2025. That number is not an Al–NO3 battery result and should not be presented as one. Bonn also said an economically useful renewable-fertilizer process would need a 1,000-fold higher yield. The team used a palladium foil electrode and a hydrogen-permeable membrane, verified isotope-labelled products with infrared spectroscopy and mass spectrometry, and filed a patent application.

“The Haber-Bosch process is extremely energy-intensive,” said Prof. Dr. Nikolay Kornienko of the University of Bonn.
The same release cautioned that reaction rates and selectivity still need work: “In general, research needs to be done on the reaction rates and selectivity of the system—the control of electrons to the desired target.” Bonn’s broader description is equally important: “We are still in the early stages.”

Feedstock and energy accounting
An Al–NO3 process may avoid some high-pressure N2 chemistry, but it does not make material and energy inputs disappear. Aluminium must be produced or recovered, nitrate must be supplied, and the cell must separate ammonia from electrolyte. If aluminium is consumed once, recycling the oxidised aluminium becomes central to both cost and environmental impact.
Rate and selectivity
Industrial fertilizer plants need steady, high-throughput ammonia production. A laboratory measurement in a small volume does not establish production rate per square metre of electrode, per kilogram of aluminium, or per unit of electricity. Selectivity matters because nitrate can stop at nitrite or other nitrogen products, leaving less nitrogen in ammonia and creating a separation burden.

Reactive aluminium can corrode, passivate or form deposits. Cathodes can lose activity or selectivity, while electrolyte composition can drift as aluminium dissolves and nitrate is consumed. The Nature Energy analysis identifies solid-electrolyte interphase stability and electrode durability as key unresolved variables for mediated electrochemical systems. An Al–NO3 plant would need comparable lifetime data under continuous operation.

Ammonia recovery and safety
Ammonia dissolved in the post-test electrolyte is not the same as an isolated fertilizer product. Scale-up would require a recovery step, control of ammonia emissions, nitrate management and treatment of aluminium-containing waste. Any process handling concentrated ammonia, nitrate and reactive aluminium would also need industrial chemical-safety controls.
How to evaluate an “aluminium–nitrogen battery” claim
Use the following checks before treating a headline, video or product listing as evidence of a working technology:
- Identify the nitrogen feed. Is it nitrate, nitrogen gas, aluminium nitride or another compound? Nitrate-fed and N2-fed systems solve different problems.
- Check whether ammonia was directly measured. Look for an analytical method, calibration, blank controls and a nitrogen balance.
- Separate yield from rate. A total amount of ammonia, a mass-specific yield and a continuous production rate are different metrics.
- Find the energy boundary. Ask whether the figure includes aluminium production, nitrate manufacture, heating, pumping, gas separation and ammonia recovery.
- Look for operating duration. A short batch test cannot establish electrode life, electrolyte replacement intervals or continuous-flow stability.
- Check the device description. An aluminium plate, Cu/Ni cathode and controlled electrolyte indicate a research cell, not automatically a rechargeable battery.
- Demand independent confirmation. Isotope-labelled nitrogen, spectroscopy or mass spectrometry can help distinguish newly formed ammonia from contamination.
Is the technology commercially available?
No verified consumer product or Amazon-searchable item directly representing an Al–N battery was identified. The demonstrated assemblies are laboratory reactors that require reactive electrodes, a selected electrolyte, nitrate chemistry and ammonia analysis. Generic aluminium foil, ordinary rechargeable batteries, nitrate chemicals or chargers are not substitutes for the reported cell.
The nearest practical opportunity is specialist research equipment: aluminium electrodes, copper or nickel cathodes, electrochemical cells, potentiostats, gas-handling hardware and ammonia-analysis supplies. Those are components for experiments, not a ready-made ammonia generator, and any purchase would need to match the required chemistry and safety specification.
What would have to happen next
A credible path toward industrial relevance would begin with reproducible measurements across independent laboratories. Researchers would need to publish ammonia rate, Faradaic efficiency, selectivity against nitrite and other products, energy use, aluminium consumption, nitrate conversion and electrolyte lifetime using a clearly defined system boundary.
The next engineering step would be a continuous-flow cell that maintains cathode activity while removing ammonia and controlling aluminium corrosion. Long-duration tests should track electrode area, current density, temperature, pressure, maintenance and waste streams rather than reporting only a final concentration.
For dross-based looping, scale-up questions include feed composition variability, the energy penalty of grinding and heating, control of hazardous dust, regeneration of the nitrogen carrier and the fate of residual metals. The 700 °C result is promising for waste valorisation, but it does not demonstrate an electrochemical battery or low-temperature fertilizer plant.

Bottom line for readers
Aluminium can drive nitrate-to-ammonia chemistry in a laboratory Al–NO3 cell, and aluminium dross can serve as a nitrogen carrier in a separate 700 °C chemical loop. These are credible research directions because they offer alternatives to conventional nitrogen activation and may connect ammonia production with electricity or industrial waste. They remain far from replacing Haber–Bosch: no commercial Al–N battery exists, and the decisive evidence—continuous production rate, selectivity, durability and full energy accounting—has not yet been established.
