Yes, algae-derived lipids can be converted into benzene, but two very different laboratory routes are often confused. A defined route starts with eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) from microalgae oil, uses olefin metathesis to build a cyclic diene, then dehydrogenates it to benzene. A second route pyrolyzes lipid-rich whole microalgae over HZSM-5 zeolite and produces a mixed BTX stream—benzene, toluene and xylenes—rather than purified benzene. Neither route has yet demonstrated commercial-scale economics, long catalyst life or a consumer-ready process.
What “algae to benzene” actually means
Benzene is a six-carbon aromatic hydrocarbon used to make plastics, resins, synthetic fibers, detergents and many other chemicals. Algal biomass does not contain benzene in a form that can simply be extracted. Researchers must rearrange the carbon in algal fatty acids or thermally decompose the complete biomass, then separate the resulting aromatics.

The published work falls into two categories:
- Molecularly defined EPA conversion: purified eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA), a highly unsaturated fatty acid found in some microalgae oils, is reorganized through olefin metathesis and then aromatized by catalytic dehydrogenation. The reported chemistry forms two effective benzene equivalents per EPA substrate molecule.
- Whole-biomass catalytic pyrolysis: lipid-rich Chlorella is heated over acidic zeolite catalysts. The lipid fraction becomes hydrocarbons, which crack, cyclize and dehydrogenate into a distribution of benzene, toluene, xylene and heavier aromatics.
These approaches answer different questions. The EPA sequence is the closer analogue to a planned benzene synthesis because its starting molecule and reaction pathway are defined. Pyrolysis is more tolerant of inexpensive, chemically mixed biomass, but it produces a complex product slate that requires upgrading and separation.
Route 1: converting EPA from microalgae oil
Why EPA is a useful starting molecule
EPA contains 20 carbon atoms and five isolated carbon-carbon double bonds. Those unsaturations provide handles for olefin metathesis, a catalytic reaction that cuts and reconnects alkene fragments. Instead of trying to remove most of the carbon as waste, the reported strategy reorganizes EPA’s double bonds into ring-containing molecules that can be aromatized.

This route assumes an EPA-rich oil or an isolated EPA fraction. Whole algae contain proteins, carbohydrates, pigments, minerals and many other lipids; those components are not part of the clean molecular sequence and would complicate catalyst performance and product purification.
Step 1: olefin metathesis creates a cyclic diene
In the 2018 work by Pingen, Zimmerer, Klinkenberg and Mecking, olefin-metathesis catalysts rearrange EPA’s five double bonds. The carbon framework is divided and reconnected to form a 1,4-cyclohexadiene intermediate. This intermediate already has the six-carbon ring needed for benzene, but two positions remain unsaturated rather than fully aromatic.
The metathesis stage also generates oxygenated fragments. Depending on the exact reaction and work-up, the principal co-products are reported as 5-octenoic acid and 5-decenedioic acid. These co-products matter to process economics because the benzene stream is not the only material that must be recovered or sold.

Dehydrogenation removes hydrogen from the 1,4-cyclohexadiene. Removing those hydrogen atoms creates the third pair of alternating bonds and converts the ring into benzene. The authors describe the outcome as “two equivalents of benzene” effectively formed per EPA substrate molecule. “Equivalent” is important: it expresses the molecular carbon balance and reported reaction performance, not a guarantee that a commercial plant would isolate two bottles of pure benzene for every EPA molecule fed.

The same dehydrogenation operation can also be run under hydrogen pressure. Under that condition, the major acid co-products become saturated octanoic acid and sebacic acid while benzene formation is retained. Hydrogen pressure therefore changes the co-product slate without eliminating the aromatic product.
What this route does and does not prove
The EPA study demonstrates a chemically intelligible way to transform a defined algal fatty acid into benzene and valuable oxygenated co-products. It does not establish the cost or availability of EPA feedstock at petrochemical scale, the number of catalyst cycles possible before replacement, the energy required for hydrogen management and separations, or lifecycle greenhouse-gas performance.
Route 2: catalytic fast pyrolysis of whole microalgae
What happens to the lipid fraction
Whole microalgae contain lipids alongside carbohydrates and proteins. During catalytic fast pyrolysis, heat rapidly decomposes the biomass while a catalyst steers vapors toward hydrocarbons and aromatics. In the lipid fraction, decarboxylation and decarbonylation remove oxygen from fatty acids and create long-chain hydrocarbons. HZSM-5, an acidic shape-selective zeolite, then promotes cracking of those chains, cyclization of shorter fragments and dehydrogenation to aromatic molecules.

Reported performance with HZSM-5
A 2020 catalytic-pyrolysis study of lipid-rich Chlorella reported that, at 550 °C, total aromatics reached 36.4% grams per gram of ash-free microalgae, with 87% aromatic selectivity in the bio-oil. “Total aromatics” includes more than benzene; the value must not be read as a benzene yield. The authors reported benzene, toluene and xylene as the primary aromatic products under both in-situ and ex-situ catalyst arrangements.
A newer 2024 study using methane-assisted pyrolysis with a Zn/Ga-modified HZSM-5 catalyst reported BTEX yields up to 7.62 wt% from Chlorella vulgaris. BTEX means benzene, toluene, ethylbenzene and xylenes. This figure is a combined BTEX yield under the study’s specified conditions, not a measurement of purified benzene and not a universal yield for all algae or all HZSM-5 reactors.
Why catalyst formulation and gas atmosphere matter
Plain HZSM-5 provides acid sites that crack and aromatize vapors, while its pore structure influences which molecules can form and leave the catalyst. Researchers have also tested metal-modified versions, including zinc, gallium and platinum formulations, and hydrogen-rich or methane-containing gases. These additions can alter deoxygenation, hydrogen transfer, aromatic selectivity and coke formation. A catalyst label alone is not enough to reproduce a result: silica-to-alumina ratio, metal loading, crystal size, reactor geometry, vapor residence time and catalyst-to-feed ratio all affect the outcome.
How the two routes compare
| Criterion | EPA metathesis and dehydrogenation | Whole-microalgae catalytic pyrolysis |
|---|---|---|
| Feed | Defined EPA fraction from microalgae oil | Lipid-rich, wet or dried microalgal biomass such as Chlorella |
| Main chemistry | Olefin metathesis forms 1,4-cyclohexadiene; dehydrogenation forms benzene | Decarboxylation/decarbonylation, cracking, cyclization and dehydrogenation |
| Primary aromatic product | Benzene-focused molecular synthesis | BTX and other C6–C12 aromatics, including heavier species |
| Key catalyst types | Olefin-metathesis and dehydrogenation catalysts | HZSM-5; modified systems include Zn/Ga/Pt and hydrogen- or methane-rich gases |
| Reported quantitative result | Two effective benzene equivalents per EPA molecule | 36.4% total aromatics per gram ash-free algae and 87% aromatic selectivity in bio-oil at 550 °C; a separate study reported up to 7.62 wt% BTEX |
| Important co-products | 5-octenoic acid and 5-decenedioic acid; under hydrogen pressure, octanoic acid and sebacic acid | Mixed aromatics, hydrocarbons, oxygenates, nitrogen compounds and coke |
| Separation challenge | Recover benzene and isolate acid co-products | Separate benzene from toluene, xylenes and heavier or non-aromatic compounds |
What the reported numbers mean in practice
Yield, selectivity and conversion describe different things. A yield is the amount of a specified product relative to the feed basis. Selectivity is the fraction of detected products belonging to a product class. Conversion is the fraction of a reactant consumed. They cannot be substituted for one another.

- The EPA result is a stoichiometric, molecule-level outcome for a defined substrate. It does not state a plant-wide mass yield after EPA purification, solvent recovery, catalyst loss and benzene separation.
- The 36.4% figure is total aromatics per gram of ash-free microalgae. Ash-free means the inorganic residue is excluded from the denominator. It is not a benzene-only yield.
- The 87% figure is aromatic selectivity in the bio-oil under the reported 550 °C experiment. Gas products, char, coke and aqueous products still matter to a complete mass balance.
- The 7.62 wt% BTEX value is specific to methane-assisted Zn/Ga-HZSM-5 pyrolysis of Chlorella vulgaris. Changing feed moisture, catalyst, gas, heating rate or residence time can change it substantially.
A realistic process chain from algae to recoverable benzene
- Produce and harvest algae. The operation must concentrate biomass and manage salts, water and residual culture medium. Drying can consume significant energy, while wet processing changes the reactor feed and heat duty.
- Choose the feed strategy. An EPA route requires lipid extraction and an EPA-rich fraction. A pyrolysis route can accept more of the biomass but sacrifices molecular selectivity.
- Condition the catalyst and reactor. Metathesis and dehydrogenation require different catalyst environments from high-temperature HZSM-5 pyrolysis. Feed contaminants, water and metals can affect activity and coke formation.
- Run the conversion step. The EPA sequence uses separate bond-rearrangement and aromatization functions. Pyrolysis rapidly heats biomass vapors, typically in the 450–550 °C range reported for the cited studies, and contacts them with zeolite catalyst.
- Quench and fractionate products. Condensed bio-oil contains multiple aromatic and non-aromatic compounds. Benzene must be separated from toluene, xylenes and heavier molecules; acid co-products from the EPA route require their own purification.
- Recycle or replace catalyst. Coke deposition, poisoning and thermal aging can lower activity. A practical design needs regeneration equipment, make-up catalyst and a plan for spent catalyst.
Known performance and durability limits
Laboratory results also show why a high initial aromatic yield is not enough. In a 2016 study of lipid conversion over a Ni/SiO2 catalyst, about 15% conversion was reached before deactivation after 60 minutes at 300 °C and 30 bar hydrogen. That result is not an HZSM-5 pyrolysis yield, but it illustrates the broader durability problem: catalyst activity can fall quickly when real lipid feeds generate deposits or expose the catalyst to impurities.
An earlier 2013 model-compound study found that lipids represented 12.33% of the tested Chlorella yet contributed roughly 40% of aromatic production. The observation supports the importance of lipids as aromatic precursors, while also showing that a small feed fraction can dominate product formation. It should not be used to predict every algae species, cultivation condition or reactor.
Is algae-derived benzene commercially viable?
Not on the evidence currently cited. The studies are laboratory demonstrations. They do not establish commercial-scale economics, continuous operation over industrial time periods, lifecycle emissions, reliable year-round feed supply, catalyst replacement costs or a proven route to petrochemical-grade benzene.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesThe strongest commercial case would require several conditions at once: a low-cost algae or algal-lipid source, high carbon retention, saleable co-products, stable catalysts, efficient heat integration and a purification train that can meet benzene specifications. The EPA route offers a cleaner molecular product concept but depends on obtaining a relatively specific fatty acid. Pyrolysis accepts less-refined biomass but creates a broader mixture and therefore a more demanding separation system.

Safety and handling
Benzene is toxic and carcinogenic. The cited experiments use sealed laboratory reactors, controlled heating, analytical equipment and engineered handling systems. They are not instructions for a home experiment, improvised reactor or kitchen-scale biomass conversion.
HZSM-5 is a useful research catalyst, but a marketplace listing is not automatically equivalent to the material used in a paper. Composition, acidity, particle size, metal loading, dust hazards, reactor compatibility and disposal requirements must be verified with a supplier’s technical and safety documentation. Any process involving benzene, hydrogen, methane, high temperatures or pressurized equipment requires professional process-safety controls.
The practical takeaway
If the question is “Can algae oil be turned into benzene?”, the answer is yes at laboratory scale, most directly by converting EPA through olefin metathesis followed by catalytic dehydrogenation. If the question is “Does algae pyrolysis produce benzene?”, the answer is also yes, but benzene appears as one component of a BTX-rich aromatic mixture made from whole biomass. The distinction between a defined benzene synthesis and a mixed-aromatics pyrolysis product is essential when interpreting yields, catalyst claims and prospects for commercialization.
