Seat-selection fees are optional charges for choosing a particular seat before departure. On many Basic or lowest-tier fares, you can decline the seat map purchase and receive an airline-assigned seat at no charge. The trade-off is less control over location and no automatic promise that companions will sit together.
This guide focuses on the U.S. policies documented for American Airlines, Delta Air Lines, JetBlue and Southwest, plus the U.S. Department of Transportation’s family-seating information. Rules, prices and availability can change by route, aircraft, fare family and travel date, so treat the booking flow for your exact itinerary as the final authority.

What a seat-selection fee actually buys
A paid seat fee buys advance control over a seat shown as available in the airline’s seat map. It is separate from the transportation fare. You may be choosing a window, aisle, preferred location or a seat in a fare-defined category, depending on the airline and aircraft.

Instead, the airline assigns one under the rules of your fare, often at check-in or sometime before departure. “Free seat” therefore means a free assignment chosen by the airline, not a free choice of any remaining seat.

- Choice: Paying can let you select from available seats before departure.
- Assignment: Skipping the fee leaves the airline to assign a seat according to its process.
- Availability: A paid choice is limited to seats still open on that flight segment.
- Companions: A seat assignment for each traveler does not necessarily put people on the same reservation together.
Even a paid assignment can be changed later for operational, safety or security reasons. A seat fee is payment for selection when available, not an absolute guarantee that the aircraft will depart with that exact seat configuration.
How the major U.S. examples handle Basic fares
The policies below illustrate why one airline’s rule should not be applied to another. “Not stated” means the cited policy does not establish that detail; check the itinerary’s current fare rules.
| Airline | Advance choice on the lowest fare | If you decline | Companion or payment notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| American Airlines | Basic Economy travelers can choose a specific seat at any time for a fee. | Seats are automatically assigned for free at check-in. | American says it cannot guarantee companions on the same ticket will sit together. Certain AAdvantage status and eligible card benefits can change what is included. |
| Delta Air Lines | The seat-selection fee is charged per seat, per flight segment and is subject to availability. | The cited policy does not state a single universal assignment time for every Basic Economy itinerary. | Paid assignments are nonrefundable and nontransferable. Basic Economy does not guarantee a seat next to companions. |
| JetBlue | Main Base travelers may select seats at any time for a fee; TrueBlue points can be used for seats before check-in. | If you do not select, seats are assigned before departure. | The cited policy does not establish a general adjacent-seat guarantee for companions. |
| Southwest | Basic fares do not include seat selection. | A Standard seat is assigned at check-in. | Basic fares are last to board. The cited fare rules do not state a general companion guarantee or a paid-seat refund rule for Basic. |
These differences matter on a round trip. Delta’s wording, for example, makes clear that the unit is one seat on one flight segment. A connecting itinerary can therefore create separate seat decisions and separate charges on each leg, rather than one fee for the entire journey.
How the total cost is calculated
Compare the amount you will actually pay, not the headline fare on the first results screen. A useful calculation is:
all-in trip cost = base fare + required taxes and charges + seat fees for each traveler and each segment

For a nonstop round trip, a seat fee can apply to the outbound and return segments. With a connection, the itinerary may contain four segments, and a traveler who wants a selected seat on every leg must evaluate each one. The fee can also differ by seat and by flight, so do not assume the first seat price applies throughout the itinerary.
A higher fare may include some form of seat choice, while a cheaper Basic fare may charge separately. The only reliable comparison is to price both options through checkout:

- Record the total for the lowest fare with no seat purchases.
- Add the seats you would actually choose for every traveler and segment.
- Price the next fare family with its included benefits and any remaining seat charges.
- Compare the final totals, then consider whether the higher fare offers flexibility or boarding benefits you value.
If you are traveling alone and will accept any assigned seat, the Basic option can avoid the add-on entirely. If sitting beside a companion is essential, a fare with included choice may cost less than buying separate selections after the fact. There is no universal break-even price because seat availability and fees are itinerary-specific.
When skipping the fee is usually practical
You do not care where you sit
Decline the seat-map purchase and follow the airline’s assignment process. American assigns a Basic Economy seat free at check-in, JetBlue assigns one before departure, and Southwest assigns a Standard seat at check-in. Delta’s exact timing is not universal in the cited material, so follow the assignment notice in your reservation.
You are traveling alone
A solo traveler avoids the problem of separating a group. You still give up control over aisle, window, legroom and proximity to the front, but the financial trade-off may be worthwhile when location is unimportant.

The seat fee would be charged on many segments
On a multi-leg itinerary, paying for every segment can multiply a seemingly small add-on. Price the complete trip before selecting anything; a different fare family can have a lower all-in total once repeated seat charges are included.
You qualify for a specific benefit
Check your account and the fare rules before paying. American identifies certain AAdvantage status members and eligible AAdvantage cardmembers as retaining seat benefits, although the exact benefit varies by flight and restrictions apply to tickets bought on or after May 18, 2026. Do not assume status or a card makes every seat free.
You can use an airline’s permitted points option
JetBlue states that TrueBlue points can be used for seats before check-in. That can reduce the cash component, but points are still a cost; compare their value with accepting an assigned seat.
Family seating: when a child may sit next to an adult without a fee
The U.S. Department of Transportation’s family-seating dashboard, last updated September 5, 2025, lists American, Alaska, Frontier, Hawaiian and JetBlue as guaranteeing adjacent seats for a child age 13 or under and an accompanying adult at no additional cost, subject to conditions. Delta, Southwest and United are listed as having no such commitment in the dashboard.
The guarantee is conditional rather than a blanket promise for every booking. The dashboard’s conditions include:

- The child and accompanying adult must be on the same reservation.
- Adjacent seats must be available in the class of service booked.
- The itinerary must not involve a substitution to a smaller aircraft that removes the required adjacent seats.
- Travelers must not change the assigned seats in a way that defeats the arrangement.
Because the dashboard is a cross-carrier reference with a stated update date, verify the current airline policy and your reservation. The protection concerns the qualifying child-and-adult pairing; it does not necessarily place every member of a larger group together or provide a preferred row.
How to use the family policy
- Book the child and accompanying adult under the same reservation and enter accurate dates of birth.
- Review the airline’s current family-seating terms for the route, aircraft and fare.
- Look for adjacent assignments in the reservation after ticketing and again before departure.
- If the condition appears unmet, contact the airline before buying seats and identify the child’s age, reservation and flight segments.
- Do not voluntarily swap assigned seats unless you have confirmed that the resulting arrangement still satisfies the policy.
What happens if you skip seat selection
Before check-in
Your reservation may show no seat number while the airline holds the assignment until its stated window. JetBlue says assignment occurs before departure; American and Southwest identify check-in as the point at which a free seat is assigned for their Basic products. Delta’s timing can depend on the itinerary and fare rules.
At assignment
The airline chooses from seats available under its process. You may receive a middle seat, a seat near the rear or seats in different rows from companions. A paid seat elsewhere on the aircraft does not create a general right to move into it without paying or without availability.
At the airport and onboard
Bring the seat numbers shown in your boarding documents and follow the gate agent’s instructions if the aircraft or seating plan changes. Airlines can reassign seats for operational, safety or security reasons, including after a paid selection.
Southwest adds a boarding consideration: its Basic fares are last to board. That does not by itself state where the assigned seat will be, but it can affect how much overhead-bin space remains and how quickly you board.
Best Value
Paid-seat limitations and refunds
Availability is dynamic. A seat visible when you search may disappear before payment, and a preferred seat can become unavailable when the airline changes aircraft. Delta explicitly says its seat-selection fees are nonrefundable and nontransferable. Other carriers’ refund treatment can differ by fare, disruption and reason for the change, so read the terms attached to the exact purchase.
Keep the receipt and the seat assignment confirmation. If the airline moves you because of an operational change, ask the carrier to explain the replacement and the remedy available under that itinerary’s terms. Do not assume that a voluntary change, missed flight or transfer to another traveler will preserve a paid seat benefit.
A booking checklist that avoids surprise charges
- Identify the fare family. Confirm whether it is Basic, Main or another tier and read the seat language before entering the seat map.
- Count every segment. Write down each flight leg and each traveler who needs a selected seat.
- Open the seat map only after noting the fare total. This gives you a baseline for the all-in comparison.
- Check benefits. Apply eligible status, card or points options and verify which travelers and segments they cover.
- Test the family rule if relevant. Confirm the child’s age, same-reservation requirement, aircraft and booked class.
- Compare fare families. Price the higher fare with included benefits against Basic plus the seats you would actually buy.
- Review the final checkout page. Confirm the number of seats, segments, currencies, taxes and any nonrefundable terms.
- Save the assignment. Keep the confirmation and recheck it after check-in or an aircraft-change notice.
Why airlines charge for advance seats
Seat fees are a significant ancillary-revenue category. A 2024 report from the U.S. Senate Permanent Subcommittee on Investigations found $12.4 billion in combined seat-fee revenue for American, Delta, United, Frontier and Spirit from 2018 through 2023. The report says each of those five airlines charged for advance seat selection on its cheapest economy fares when the customer lacked loyalty status.
The figure covers those five airlines and that six-year period; it is not a universal fee total for every carrier or a prediction of what your itinerary will cost. It does explain why a low advertised fare can rise during seat selection and why comparing the checkout total is more meaningful than comparing the first fare displayed.
The practical decision
Skip the fee when an airline-assigned seat meets your needs, especially for a solo traveler or a trip with several segments. Pay, or choose a fare that includes selection, when location or sitting beside a companion is worth the confirmed cost and the seat map shows acceptable availability. For a child age 13 or under traveling with an adult, first determine whether the carrier and itinerary meet the DOT-listed adjacent-seat conditions before purchasing seats.
Finally, treat every policy as itinerary-specific. Airline pages, fare families, aircraft assignments and loyalty rules change; review the current terms shown for your flight before payment and again after any schedule or aircraft change.
