An AI writing tutor is meant to help you make better decisions about your writing; proofreading checks surface errors, editing can improve clarity and structure, and essay-rewriting tools generate replacement wording. The labels overlap in real products, so the useful distinction is what the tool does: explain an issue, suggest a change, or write text for you.
What each type of tool does
AI writing tutors: feedback intended to support learning
A writing tutor workflow is organized around learning and revision. It may ask questions, explain a problem, or point to a possible next step while leaving meaningful choices and composing to the student. “AI writing tutor” is not a standardized product category, however; a label alone does not establish that a product teaches. Look at its actual feedback and what it asks the writer to do.

Proofreading: surface-level correctness
Proofreading focuses on spelling, grammar, punctuation, and related style issues. Turnitin’s student instructions describe Proofread Mode as checking spelling and grammar, while its Clarity guidance describes proofreading as identifying grammar or style issues without rewriting the text.

Editing: a broader and less consistent term
Editing can address clarity, wordiness, tone, organization, or structure, as well as correctness. One tool may explain a possible improvement; another may directly rewrite a sentence. Because “editing” covers both kinds of action, check whether a feature offers feedback, a suggested edit, or replacement prose.

Essay rewriting: generated replacement prose
Essay-rewriting tools transform a student’s wording or generate replacement text. That can save time, but it also shifts some authorship decisions—such as how to phrase an idea—from the student to the tool. Grammarly, for example, promotes one-click AI rewriting alongside feedback and proofreading on its student page.
How the categories overlap in real products
A single service can offer different kinds of assistance at different stages. Grammarly describes support for brainstorming, strategic development, proofreading, and rewriting. Its support page says it flags potential issues and makes context-specific suggestions about grammar, spelling, usage, wordiness, style, punctuation, tone, and plagiarism; it also says suggestions explain the reasoning so users can decide whether and how to change their text. These are the vendor’s descriptions of its features, not independent evidence of learning gains or comparative accuracy. See Grammarly’s explanation of how it works.

Turnitin’s student instructions distinguish Signal Check feedback from Proofread Mode and describe students using findings to edit an essay. Its Revision Assistant student guide also describes saving drafts with feedback and grammar guidance after specified actions. Mode availability is assignment-specific, so a student should not assume every class or deployment offers the same settings.
Turnitin’s Clarity guidance describes a chat-style assistant students can ask questions or use to request feedback on selected text. It separately describes proofreading that identifies grammar or style issues without rewriting. The contrast shows why interaction style and the amount of generated replacement text matter: a chat interface is not automatically a tutor, and feedback is different from having the system compose the change.

How to tell what kind of help you are getting
Before using a feature, check these dimensions rather than relying on its name:
- Writing stage: Does it help with planning, drafting, revision, or final correction?
- Type of help: Does it ask a question, explain a problem, diagnose an issue, suggest an edit, or generate replacement text?
- Student agency: Do you make and compose the revision, accept a proposed edit, or adopt text the tool generated?
- Scope: Does it check surface correctness, or also address clarity, argument, organization, evidence, or assignment criteria?
- Workflow controls: Is the feature available in your account, enabled by your institution, or limited to a particular assignment or mode?
- Process visibility: Are drafts or revision history saved? A saved record can show parts of a process, but its existence alone does not establish how much of the work was your own.
Choosing a tool that helps you improve your writing
If your goal is to learn, prefer a workflow that explains why something may be wrong, asks you to consider options, and leaves you to decide and compose the revision. Use proofreading when you want a focused check for surface errors. Use broader editing features when you want help with clarity or structure, but check whether they explain suggestions or simply substitute text. Treat rewriting as generated assistance, not as equivalent to feedback that develops your own revision skills.

For coursework, check the rules that apply to your assignment and the features your instructor or institution has enabled. Product descriptions explain what vendors say a tool can do; they do not establish that a use is permitted under a particular class policy.

They do not establish that one category or product improves writing outcomes more reliably than another, nor do they provide an independent head-to-head comparison.
