Use the transfer steps for the direction you’re moving: iPhone to Android uses WhatsApp’s QR-code and local Wi-Fi flow; Android to iPhone uses Apple’s Move to iOS app during iPhone setup. Both methods require the same phone number on the old and new phones. These instructions reflect WhatsApp Help Center guidance checked on October 4, 2026; requirements and app labels can change.
Choose the transfer route for your new phone

Before you start: protect access to your chats
- Use the same phone number. Register the new phone with the number used on the old one. If you are changing numbers, use WhatsApp’s change-number process on the old phone first; registering a different number directly on the new phone may cost you access to the old chat history. WhatsApp’s change-number guidance explains that process.
- Transfer before using WhatsApp on the destination phone. WhatsApp does not merge the old chat history with new chats. Android-to-iPhone migration also requires an iPhone that is new or factory-reset for the documented Move to iOS procedure.
- Keep the source phone’s WhatsApp data intact. Don’t erase or reset the old phone, or delete WhatsApp, until you have checked the transferred chats and media on the new phone.
- Update WhatsApp on both devices. The guides require current app versions; the exact version number is not specified in the help pages.
Transfer WhatsApp chats from iPhone to Android
This route uses WhatsApp’s transfer flow and a local Wi-Fi connection. WhatsApp says the transfer includes account information, individual and group chats, communities, channel updates, chat history, call history, media and settings. It excludes your display name, status updates, media received through WhatsApp Channels and peer-to-peer payment messages. The process can take longer with more data.
- On the iPhone, open WhatsApp and go to Chats > Transfer Chat History > Transfer to Android. Follow the preparation prompts and allow camera access when asked.
- Keep the iPhone unlocked while the transfer is prepared.
- On the Android phone, open WhatsApp and verify the same phone number used on the iPhone.
- Allow the phones to connect. When a QR code appears on Android, scan it with the iPhone and join the local Wi-Fi connection when prompted.
- Wait for the transfer to finish, then continue in WhatsApp on Android and check that your chats and media are present.
WhatsApp says the local Wi-Fi transfer is not stored in cloud storage; an iCloud backup may exist separately. The old iPhone retains its data unless you erase it or delete WhatsApp. WhatsApp’s guide says this route is currently unavailable in WhatsApp Business.

Transfer WhatsApp chats from Android to iPhone
For this direction, Apple’s Move to iOS app moves the WhatsApp data during iPhone setup. WhatsApp says the transfer includes account information, profile photo, individual and group chats, communities, channel updates, chat history, media and settings. It excludes call history, display name, media received through WhatsApp Channels and peer-to-peer payment messages.
- Make sure the iPhone is new or factory-reset. Keep both phones connected to power and on the same Wi-Fi network, or connect the Android phone to the iPhone’s hotspot.
- Start iPhone setup. When offered a data-transfer option, choose the option to transfer data from Android.
- On Android, open Apple’s Move to iOS app and enter the code shown on the iPhone.
- On the Move to iOS transfer screen, select WhatsApp. Let WhatsApp prepare the export, then return to Move to iOS and complete the transfer.
- After iPhone setup, install or open WhatsApp on the iPhone and verify the same phone number used on Android. Follow WhatsApp’s prompts to import your chats.
Transferred data is not stored in iCloud automatically. To create a cloud copy, make an iCloud backup after the transfer. The old Android phone retains its data unless you erase it or delete WhatsApp. WhatsApp’s guide says this route is currently unavailable in WhatsApp Business.

If the transfer is unavailable or gets stuck
WhatsApp is already active on the new phone
The transfer may no longer appear in the initial setup flow, and WhatsApp does not merge chats from the two phones. For iPhone to Android, WhatsApp says to uninstall WhatsApp on the new Android phone and retry. For Android to iPhone, its guide says to erase or reset the new iPhone and repeat setup. Keep the old phone’s data until you have completed and checked the transfer.

Make sure you are scanning the code displayed after registering WhatsApp on Android, and accept the requested permissions on the iPhone. WhatsApp’s transfer troubleshooting guidance also calls out using the same Wi-Fi network and enabling live location; restart both phones if the transfer is stuck. If a transfer fails, WhatsApp says the data remains on the old phone as long as you have not deleted it.

Transfer is not the same as backup
The documented methods move data between devices; they do not, by themselves, guarantee a cloud backup. After an Android-to-iPhone transfer, create an iCloud backup separately if you want a cloud copy. WhatsApp says it manages the iPhone-to-Android process, messages remain end-to-end encrypted during transfer, and “WhatsApp can’t see the data you transfer.”
