AI assistant memory is not one permanent record of everything you have said. It is a set of information sources an assistant may use to personalize a response: the current conversation, saved details, and—depending on the product and your settings—past chats or other connected information. ChatGPT is a useful documented example, but its controls and available sources vary by account, region, platform, plan, and workspace.
How does AI assistant memory work?
It helps to separate three ideas: context, saved facts, and retrieval. “Memory” is a product feature name, not proof that an assistant remembers like a person or searches every message before every answer.

- Context is information available to shape a particular response. It can include the current conversation and, where enabled, other sources such as saved memories, past chats, custom instructions, files, or connected apps.
- Saved facts are details stored through a memory feature so they may be available in later conversations. In ChatGPT, saved memories are stored separately from chat history.
- Retrieval and use means selecting information that may be relevant to a response. ChatGPT’s Help Center says the product decides what available information is relevant and does not retain every detail or search chat history for every response.
The practical result is selective personalization: an assistant may use some information, omit other details, or draw on a source you did not explicitly ask it to save. The available sources and controls depend on the account’s feature settings.

OpenAI’s Help Center lists several possible sources for personalization. Their availability is not universal, and the Memory summary is a high-level view rather than a complete record of every detail or factor used.
#1 Best Overall
| Source | How it may contribute | Review or removal consideration |
|---|---|---|
| Current chat | Messages in the conversation provide immediate context for the response. | Delete the conversation if you want to remove that chat from your history; this does not necessarily remove a separate saved memory created from it. |
| Saved memories | Details retained separately from chat history may be used in future conversations. | Review and delete saved entries through the memory controls. Deleting only the source chat may not remove the saved entry. |
| Past chats | When Reference chat history is available and enabled, relevant information from past conversations may inform a response. | Turning off Reference chat history schedules remembered information from past chats for deletion within 30 days; the original chats remain unless you delete them separately. |
| Custom instructions | Instructions you provide may shape how ChatGPT responds. | Review the custom-instructions controls separately from saved memories and chat history. |
| Library files and connected apps | Files or connected-app content, such as Gmail, may be available as sources depending on account features and settings. | Check the relevant file or connected-app controls as well as Memory; the Memory summary may not show every contributing source. |
OpenAI describes this as a changing feature: “ChatGPT decides which available information is relevant to a response, and Memory can change as your context changes.” The statement describes product behavior, not a promise that a particular fact will always be recalled.
Does ChatGPT search my history for every response?
No. OpenAI says ChatGPT does not remember every detail from past chats and does not search chat history for every response. It may use information it judges relevant when the relevant feature is available and enabled. A missing detail does not necessarily mean it was never in a chat, and a personalized answer does not prove the assistant searched every past message.
The public consumer documentation describes what users may see and control, but it does not specify one universal internal sequence for indexing, ranking, or retrieving information. Terms such as context windows, tokens, embeddings, summaries, and vector databases describe general AI concepts or possible implementations; they should not be taken as a confirmed description of ChatGPT’s exact memory machinery.

Saved memories and chat history are different
A chat is the conversation record. A saved memory is a separate stored item that can be derived from a conversation or supplied through a memory control. Consequently, deleting one does not automatically guarantee deletion of the other.
- Deleting a chat removes that conversation, but a saved memory created from it may remain.
- Deleting a saved memory does not itself delete the chat in which you mentioned the information.
- Turning off Reference chat history is different from deleting conversations: remembered information from past chats is scheduled for deletion within 30 days, while the original chats remain unless separately deleted.
- For complete removal, OpenAI says to remove the saved memory and the source chat, and check other possible sources such as archived chats, Library files, connected apps, and the Memory summary.
Changes may take time to propagate. OpenAI says logs of deleted saved memories may be retained for up to 30 days for safety and debugging.
How to review or turn off ChatGPT memory
Menu labels and available controls differ by memory experience and account. Check your account’s current options before following a path that may not appear for you.
Rank #4
- Open Settings > Personalization > Memory.
- Inspect the controls available to you, including saved memories and any option for referencing past chats. Review or correct entries where the interface allows it.
- To remove information completely, delete the saved memory and the chat it came from. Also check archived chats, Library files, connected apps, and the Memory summary if those sources could contain it.
- If you do not want a conversation to create or update memories, use Temporary Chat where available. Before starting, check whether your account lets a temporary chat use existing memories and instructions; temporary chats do not create or update memories while they remain temporary.
OpenAI says that when Reference chat history is turned off, information remembered from past chats is scheduled for deletion from its systems within 30 days. This does not delete the original chats; delete those separately if that is your goal.
Why memory behavior can differ between assistants and accounts
“AI assistant memory” does not name a single standard architecture. A product may offer explicit saved details, use past conversations, or make other sources available; another product may provide different controls or none of those features. Within ChatGPT, source availability and settings can also vary by plan, region, platform, and workspace.
OpenAI’s product announcements illustrate that the feature has evolved: its February 13, 2024 announcement introduced saved memories and user controls; updates in 2025 described memory improvements and the use of both saved memories and chat history. A 2026 explanation describes a background process called “dreaming” for curating context. These dated descriptions show product changes, not a fixed design shared by all accounts or a general algorithmic pipeline that applies to other assistants.
Quick Recap
What memory can and cannot promise
- Memory can reduce the need to repeat useful preferences or background when a relevant source is available.
- It is selective, so it may not preserve every detail or apply a remembered detail to every answer.
- Review controls and summaries can help you inspect personalization, but they may not expose every factor that shaped a response.
- Public product documentation does not establish a universal recall-accuracy percentage or a complete technical specification for retrieval.
