AI should change how Nigerian films are made only where it expands filmmakers’ creative choices without deepening unequal access, misrepresenting Nigerian cultures or stripping workers of credit and income. Current evidence points to a hybrid future: human creative authority alongside AI tools, with the terms of that collaboration shaped by the people and communities whose work and stories are involved.
What is AI changing in Nollywood so far?
Generative AI is appearing in Nigerian film and television workflows, but the evidence does not show that it has transformed the industry as a whole. A 2026 peer-reviewed study based on 21 semi-structured interviews with Nigerian filmmakers describes a mix of adoption, hybrid workflows and efforts to adapt tools to local needs. Its accessible abstract and record report the findings; the full text is embargoed until 7 February 2027. The study’s record and abstract do not establish an industry-wide rate of job replacement, cost savings or productivity gains.

A 2025 legal-industry article reports a 2024 survey in which some film and television stakeholders were already using AI while others were considering it. The account does not provide the survey’s sample size or methodology, so these figures indicate reported interest, not a census of Nigerian filmmakers.

How much change is useful—and for whom?
The central question is not whether AI belongs in Nollywood. It is who controls the tools, what work they change, and whether the benefits and risks are shared fairly. The interview study identifies several tensions that make a blanket claim of democratization or replacement too simple.

Access can reinforce existing divides
Paid tools, computing infrastructure and training are not equally accessible. The study links this uneven access to a risk of greater stratification: higher-budget productions aimed at cinemas and global streaming services may be better placed to use GenAI than lower-budget productions serving domestic streaming platforms and YouTube. If access remains unequal, AI could widen a production gap rather than automatically open filmmaking to everyone.
Generated material needs cultural judgment
The researchers report that models trained predominantly on Global North data can misplace Nigerian cultural details, reproduce stereotypes or leave cultural experience unrepresented. A tool’s fluent output is not proof that it understands a Yoruba setting, another Nigerian language or the meaning of a local tradition. Hybrid workflows, model customization and locally developed AI infrastructure are among the responses described in the study.

Some work may shift before a film reaches production
The study does not conclude that GenAI replaces creative practice overall. Instead, it says that it can substitute particular informal forms of labour, especially in pre-production. That distinction matters in an industry where informal relationships and paid contributions help people find work and build careers. A task that looks small in a workflow may still matter to the person who used to be hired to do it.
What does a hybrid AI film look like?
The Yoruba-language science-fiction feature Asiri Ilu Awon Osu (Mystery of Osu Land) offers a concrete example. Punch reported on 20 August 2026 that co-creators Mysterious Tech Studio and Yoruba actress Tanwa Hameed, also known as Asake Omogbajumo, said about 80% of the film’s visuals were generated using AI tools, with the remainder involving human direction and live-action performance. That percentage is the creators’ account as reported by Punch, not an independently audited production measurement. Punch’s report also records the filmmakers’ stated intention that AI complement human creativity rather than replace actors, directors or other creative professionals; that stated intent does not prove what effects the workflow had on workers.

The Nigeria Television Authority later described the film as drawing on Yoruba identity and traditional themes, and reported festival recognition and selections. Its framing of the project as a first should be understood as the broadcaster’s or stakeholders’ characterization, not as an independently established category for the global film industry. The example shows that a production can combine generated imagery with live action and human direction. It does not establish that AI generally lowers costs, makes independent production more accessible or guarantees audience approval. One film’s reported visual split cannot stand in for an industry-wide outcome.

What should filmmakers and policymakers protect?
Whether AI strengthens Nigerian filmmaking depends on practical choices about access, representation, labour and creative control. These are useful questions to ask when evaluating a tool or production:

- Cultural fidelity: Can Nigerian filmmakers check and correct the tool’s treatment of local languages, places, histories and traditions?
- Consent and credit: Whose likeness, performance or creative work is used, and are the people involved consulted, credited and paid appropriately?
- Work and livelihoods: Which specific tasks shift to AI, including informal pre-production work, and what happens to the people who previously did them?
- Creative authority: Can filmmakers direct, revise or reject generated material, rather than having a tool’s defaults determine the story or its visual language?
- Local capacity: Are skills, infrastructure and standards being developed in ways that reflect Nigerian filmmaking practices?
A December 2025 legal-industry analysis said that Nigeria then had no AI-specific regulation and noted approval of a National AI Strategy and a National Intellectual Property Policy and Strategy. It also discussed existing privacy, copyright and cybersecurity laws as relevant to AI use. That is a dated account, not a verified statement of Nigerian law as of October 2026; anyone making legal or policy decisions should check the current rules and guidance. How much should AI change Nigerian filmmaking?
Enough to give Nigerian filmmakers additional ways to develop and realize their ideas; not so much that unequal access, imported cultural assumptions or opaque substitution of workers become the price of adoption. The most defensible direction is not AI instead of people, but tools that people can shape and challenge, supported by local capacity and clear expectations around consent, credit and pay. Whether that direction becomes reality depends on choices made across productions and the wider industry—not on the technology alone.
