AI music generators turn prompts and, in some products, other inputs into audio by using patterns learned from audio-related training data. Some can produce instrumental music or songs with lyrics, but a prompt is not full compositional control: duration, editing options, and consistency depend on the model. Permission to use a track commercially is also separate from whether copyright law protects it.
How does an AI music generator make music?
A prompt steers a trained model; it does not teach the model music from scratch. During training, a system learns statistical relationships in audio-related data and, in some approaches, between audio and descriptions such as genre, mood, or instrumentation. At generation time, the prompt helps guide the production of new audio from those learned patterns.

One published example is Google Research’s 2023 Noise2Music system. Its paper describes a cascade of diffusion models: a text-conditioned model first generates an intermediate representation for a 30-second waveform, then a second stage uses that representation—and optionally the text—to create higher-fidelity audio. The paper explores spectrograms and lower-fidelity audio as possible intermediate representations. It also describes using pretrained language models to help create text paired with training audio and embeddings for prompts.

Commercial services may use different architectures, and their public product documentation does not establish the proprietary design of every named tool. What can current tools create?
Some products document generation of instrumental tracks as well as songs with lyrics and audio. A product may also accept inputs beyond text. Capabilities are model- and version-specific, so a claim about one product should not be treated as an industry-wide limit or feature.
| Example | Documented input or process | Documented output and control |
|---|---|---|
| Noise2Music research system | Text-conditioned generation with intermediate audio representations, as described in Google Research’s 2023 paper. | The paper’s system generated 30-second music clips; this is the research system’s output duration, not a general limit for AI music. |
| Google Lyria 3.5 | Google’s developer documentation describes text prompts and up to 10 images as inspiration. It includes prompt guidance for instruments, BPM, key, mood, and structure. | The Clip model generates 30-second clips. The Pro model generates songs lasting a couple of minutes; exact duration is influenced by the prompt. The documentation says lyrics and audio are returned as separate content blocks. |
Google’s Lyria documentation gives examples including instrumental-only tracks, game soundtracks, and background music. It recommends using section labels such as Verse, Chorus, and Bridge to indicate structure. That is product guidance, not a guarantee that every requested instrument, section, or musical detail will be followed exactly.

Can AI make a complete song with vocals?
Some current products document generation of songs with lyrics and audio, so AI can produce more than a short instrumental loop. But “complete” describes the format, not a quality guarantee: a generated song may still need a person to check its structure, lyrics, transitions, mix, and suitability for release.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteLength and editing are practical constraints. In the Lyria 3.5 documentation, Clip is fixed at 30 seconds, while Pro produces songs lasting a couple of minutes, with exact duration influenced by the prompt. The same documentation describes generation as single-turn: the current version does not support multi-prompt iterative editing. Results may vary between calls using the same prompt. Those are documented Lyria capabilities, not universal characteristics of other services.

How much control does a prompt provide?
Specific instructions can help narrow the result, but they do not make generation deterministic. Google advises Lyria users to specify elements such as instruments, BPM, key, mood, and song structure. A request can express what you want; the model may interpret or omit details, and repeating a prompt may produce a different result.
- Describe musical components: name instruments, mood, tempo, and key when they matter to the brief.
- Indicate structure: use labels such as Verse, Chorus, and Bridge when the product supports them, while treating the labels as guidance rather than a guarantee.
- Check the output: listen for unwanted lyrics, missing sections, abrupt endings, or other details that matter to your intended use.
These steps can make a prompt clearer; they do not replace editing controls that a particular product may not offer.

Can you use AI-generated music commercially?
Commercial-use permission is a contract question: it depends on the service’s current terms and the plan, output, and download conditions that apply. Copyright is a separate question about legal protection and ownership. A platform’s permission to use a track does not, by itself, establish that copyright law protects it.
Suno’s Help Center page, edited September 3, 2026, says tracks downloaded while subscribed to a paid tier receive commercial-use rights, including use on streaming platforms, in film, television, or video games, and independent sale. Suno’s terms also limit free or basic outputs to personal, noncommercial use and condition paid output use on the applicable terms and permitted downloads. Check the current terms for the specific plan and track before release; do not assume a subscription grants identical rights to every output in every circumstance.

Who owns AI-generated music, and can it be copyrighted?
There is no single answer established here for every jurisdiction. Suno’s copyright FAQ says paid-plan users own songs made while subscribed, while also warning that a song made entirely by AI may not qualify for copyright protection. The page describes U.S. copyright law as protecting human-created material and says entering a prompt alone does not constitute creation of the song. Suno also says lyrics written by a user may be protectable separately, and that treatment can differ by region or registrar. This is Suno’s explanation, not legal advice or a complete survey of copyright law.
The distinction matters in practice: a service may grant contractual permission to use an output even where copyright protection for some or all of that material is uncertain. Before commercial release, check the platform’s current terms and the rules that apply in your jurisdiction. If ownership or exclusivity is important, consider getting advice from a qualified legal professional.
What do training-data transparency and licensing tell you?
Training data is relevant to risk, but public disclosure is uneven and can become outdated. A 2025 WIPO Magazine guest essay stated that commercial models such as Suno and Udio had not disclosed their training datasets or model details as of the essay’s publication. The essay’s author also explained that neural networks may internalize statistical patterns rather than store training songs as a simple database, which can make it difficult to determine whether a particular song appeared in training. This is a dated account by the essay’s author, not an audit of companies’ current disclosures.
Licensing announcements offer a different kind of information. In a November 19, 2025 Help Center notice, Udio said it was collaborating with Warner Music Group on a next-generation service under a new licensing arrangement and that the arrangement resolved litigation between the companies. Udio also said it had entered licensing agreements with Warner and Universal to train new models based on their data and work with their artists. The notice said current use remained governed by transition terms. It does not establish the rights for any particular output or guarantee current availability or future launch details.
For a creator choosing a service, distinguish what the provider has actually documented from what remains unknown. Training-data disclosure and licensing arrangements can inform your assessment, but they do not alone determine whether a particular track is safe to publish, exclusive, or protected by copyright.
Quick Recap
What to check before releasing a generated track
- Identify the product and model. Confirm which version generated the audio; features and limits vary across models and can change.
- Read the current usage terms. Check whether your plan allows commercial use and whether the permission depends on downloading the output while subscribed or meeting other conditions.
- Separate permission from protection. Confirm what the service permits, then assess copyright questions under the relevant jurisdiction rather than assuming the contract settles them.
- Review the actual track. Check the lyrics, structure, sound, and ending against your release requirements; generation does not guarantee a polished or release-ready result.
- Keep the relevant records. Retain the applicable terms and information about the plan and output in case you need to verify what permission applied when you generated or downloaded it.
