USDT vs. USDC for Peer-to-Peer Payments: Fees, Availability, and Risks

USDT and USDC have no universal winner for peer-to-peer payments: the exact network, provider, locations, quoted fees, and transfer risks determine which route works best.

Neither USDT nor USDC is universally cheaper or easier to send to another person. The deciding factors are the blockchain you use, whether both people’s wallets or exchanges support that exact token on that chain, the quoted network and service charges, and access in each person’s location. A dollar-linked stablecoin is still a blockchain asset with issuer, market, and transfer risks.

What determines the cost of a USDT or USDC payment?

A peer-to-peer transfer can involve more than one charge. The blockchain may charge a transaction fee, while the wallet, exchange, or payment service may add a withdrawal, conversion, or other fee. Which token costs less therefore depends on the complete route—not just whether the asset is USDT or USDC.

Check the total quoted for your route

Before confirming, check the amount the sending service will deduct and the amount the recipient is expected to receive. Include the network fee and any service charges shown for that transfer. Fees can vary by network, provider, and time; the evidence available does not establish a provider-independent retail fee schedule that compares USDT and USDC across networks.

Issuer fees are not ordinary peer-transfer quotes

Tether’s published direct issuer service lists a $100,000 minimum for acquisition or redemption, a 0.1% acquisition fee, a redemption charge equal to the greater of $1,000 or 0.1%, and a $150 verification fee. Those are Tether’s direct-service terms, not a typical retail fee for sending USDT to another person. Circle says Circle Mint is for institutions, not individuals, so it should not be treated as an individual peer-payment price list. Tether’s fee schedule; Circle’s USDC information.

Which networks and services support each token?

USDT and USDC exist on multiple blockchains, but support for one token on one chain does not mean support for the same token on another chain. The sender’s and recipient’s services must support the same token-and-network combination.

USDC availability

Circle’s USDC page listed native USDC on 38 blockchain networks as of September 16, 2026. Circle also says USDC is available in more than 185 countries; that is an issuer ecosystem claim, not confirmation that a particular wallet or exchange offers USDC to customers in every one of those countries. Circle Mint is currently for institutions and unavailable to individuals. Circle USDC.

USDT availability

Tether’s supported-protocols page lists networks including Ethereum, Tron, Solana, Avalanche, and BNB Smart Chain. It also says Tether is no longer issuing or obligated to redeem tokens on Kusama, Bitcoin Cash SLP, Omni Layer, EOS, and Algorand. Check the current issuer information and the service you plan to use, particularly before transferring or holding USDT on a chain with changed support. Tether’s supported protocols.

An issuer’s network list is not a directory of every consumer service. A token can be supported by its issuer on a chain yet unavailable through the sender’s or recipient’s wallet or exchange.

How to compare USDT and USDC for a specific payment

  1. Ask the recipient which token and network their service supports. Confirm the exact asset and chain in that service, rather than relying on the token symbol alone.
  2. Verify the destination address and network together. Make sure the address is intended for the selected token on the selected chain. Tether specifically cautions users to choose the correct transport protocol. Tether FAQ.
  3. Check location and account access. Confirm that both parties can use the relevant token and service in their jurisdictions, and that the recipient can access the funds through their chosen service.
  4. Compare the final quote. Review the network fee and any wallet, exchange, conversion, or withdrawal charge shown before sending. Compare the amount received, not just one line item.
  5. Check the service’s recovery policy. Confirm what support is available if a transfer is sent to an unsupported network or address; do not assume that a mistaken transfer can be reversed.

There is no general “cheapest to send” answer without specifying the network, provider, locations, and time of the quote.

What the issuer disclosures do—and do not—say about risk

Reserve disclosures are not a comparative safety ranking

Circle describes USDC as backed by highly liquid reserves held separately for holders, with monthly third-party assurance. Circle’s transparency page reported $75.2 billion in USDC circulation and $75.5 billion in reserves as of September 24, 2026; those figures are dated issuer disclosures, not live balances. Tether describes its reserves as including traditional currency, cash equivalents, and other assets, including receivables from loans. These descriptions differ, but the disclosures alone do not establish that either token is risk-free or provide a complete comparative safety ranking. Circle transparency; Tether FAQ.

Direct redemption is not the same as retail access

Direct issuer services have eligibility, verification, minimum, and terms requirements. Tether’s published direct-service minimums and charges are described above; its terms also include eligibility and jurisdiction conditions. Circle Mint is institutional-only. An individual who cannot use an issuer’s direct service will depend on the exchange or other intermediary available to them to acquire, sell, or transfer the token. Tether fees; Circle USDC.

A dollar target does not guarantee every market trade is at one dollar

Stablecoins are designed to track a reference value, but an issuer’s policy or redemption arrangements do not guarantee that every secondary-market trade will execute at exactly $1. The cited issuer disclosures do not establish a guarantee of price stability.

Network support and transfer outcomes can change

Tether’s disclosures about legacy networks show why a route that was once available should not be assumed to remain supported. Check current issuer and service status before choosing a chain, and review the recipient service’s support and recovery terms before sending. Tether’s supported protocols.

Which one should you choose?

Choose the token and network that both parties’ services support, then compare the full quoted cost and the terms of the route you can actually use. Reserve disclosures and issuer network counts can inform the decision, but they cannot tell you whether a particular transfer will be cheaper, available in both locations, or recoverable if sent incorrectly.
