How AI Is Used in Scientific Instruments—and What It Can Automate

AI turns a scientific instrument from a device that only records measurements into part of a decision-making system. Machine-learning models can interpret live signals, detect anomalies, choose the next measurement, adjust instrument settings, and send instructions to robots that move samples or prepare reagents. When those capabilities are connected in a feedback loop, the result is an autonomous experiment or “self-driving laboratory.”

Today’s systems can automate repeatable, digitally connected work such as liquid handling, programmed scans, parameter sweeps, routine quality checks, signal processing, scheduling, and optimization of a clearly defined objective. They cannot reliably replace scientists in defining valid questions, judging surprising results, validating models, or managing safety. The practical boundary is set less by the AI model than by instrument interfaces, data quality, sample variability, and the safeguards around the workflow.

What AI adds to a scientific instrument

A conventional instrument follows a protocol and returns data. An AI-enabled setup adds interpretation and action. Measurements are converted into features or predictions; a planning algorithm uses those results to select a useful next step; control software changes instrument settings; and the new result is fed back into the model.

Interpreting high-bandwidth data

Scientific instruments can produce far more data than a person can inspect during an experiment. AI and machine-learning models can classify spectra, images, waveforms, or time series; extract peaks and other features; flag outliers; estimate hidden states; and recognize patterns that are difficult to specify with hand-written rules. The OECD describes AI as a way to identify new science and theories in high-bandwidth instrument streams and to insert inference into control and analysis loops.

Interpretation is not limited to a final pass after an experiment. A model can analyze data as it arrives and decide whether a scan should continue, whether a sample should be remeasured, or whether a safety threshold has been crossed.

Planning the next experiment

Bayesian optimization, active learning, reinforcement learning, and related methods choose the next measurement or synthesis condition according to an objective. The objective might be maximizing conductivity, finding a stable catalyst composition, mapping a phase boundary, or learning a model with as few expensive measurements as possible.

Instead of testing every point in a large grid, the planner balances exploration of uncertain regions with exploitation of conditions that already look promising. Every new result updates the model, so the next choice is based on the current evidence rather than on a fixed list of runs.

Controlling instruments in real time

Control software can set measurement parameters, trigger scans, synchronize several devices, and adjust conditions from feedback. A temperature controller, pressure system, detector, and motion stage can therefore behave as one coordinated experiment rather than as separate pieces of equipment.

Reliable control requires machine-readable commands, status reporting, error handling, and a way to stop safely. NIST identifies instrument-control and communication standards as a core requirement for autonomous laboratories because many instruments still expose incompatible interfaces.

Handling samples and laboratory logistics

Robotic systems can identify and track samples, dispense liquids, load holders, move plates, exchange tools, and sequence operations. Liquid handling is already widely installed in large pharmaceutical laboratories, according to the OECD. Other tasks remain manual because they involve irregular objects, delicate materials, awkward packaging, or frequent changes in procedure.

Closing the loop

In a closed-loop workflow, planning, execution, measurement, and model updating repeat until a target is reached, the information gain falls below a threshold, or a time, material, or safety limit is met. NIST describes autonomous laboratories as selecting samples and characterization steps in this type of feedback loop.

Generating and connecting control software

AI can also help create the software that connects instruments. NLR reported AI-assisted generation of Python control software and a graphical interface for a Keithley 2400 source-measure unit; the resulting code was released for scientific use. Generated code still needs testing, review, version control, and validation against the instrument’s documentation before it controls a live experiment.

Can AI run an experiment by itself?

Yes, but only within a bounded workflow whose objective, operating envelope, and stop conditions have been defined. “By itself” usually means that the system can select and execute the next run without a person typing each command. It does not mean that the system independently decides what counts as valid science or safely handles every unexpected situation.

Autonomy level What the system does Human role
Advisory analytics Processes data, predicts outcomes, highlights anomalies, or recommends settings. A scientist approves every action and operates the instrument.
Supervised automation Runs programmed protocols, controls instruments, and performs routine analysis; a person approves batches or exceptions. Defines the protocol, reviews checkpoints, and handles faults.
Closed-loop autonomous operation Selects the next experiment, executes it through connected instruments and robots, updates its model, and stops at predefined limits. Defines objectives and constraints, validates the system, monitors safety, and interprets important results.

NIST calls autonomous experimentation, or self-driving laboratories, a combination of AI and automation that uses human intuition and creativity to guide experiment campaigns. In the same context, NIST describes platforms that integrate robotic experimenters with AI-guided planning to perform large numbers of experiments without human input during each individual run.

What laboratory work can be automated now?

The strongest candidates are repeatable operations with stable inputs, machine-readable outputs, and an objective that can be measured automatically.

Task Typical automation Important condition
Sample identification and tracking Barcodes or other identifiers linked to a digital sample record; automated routing and status updates. Every transfer must be logged with timestamps and unambiguous identifiers.
Liquid handling Robotic dispensing, dilution, mixing, plate preparation, and waste routing. Volumes, viscosity, contamination controls, and consumable changes must be validated.
Programmed scans and parameter sweeps Instruments execute a sequence of temperatures, pressures, wavelengths, voltages, or positions. Limits and safe shutdown behavior must be encoded.
Routine calibration and quality checks Reference measurements, drift detection, and automatic quality-control flags. Reference materials and acceptance criteria must be maintained.
Signal processing Baseline correction, feature extraction, classification, denoising, and anomaly detection. Raw data must be retained so analysts can audit transformations.
Scheduling Queues jobs across instruments, robots, incubators, and storage locations. The scheduler needs accurate equipment status and conflict rules.
Optimization Bayesian or active-learning selection of the next condition or sample. The objective, constraints, uncertainty estimates, and stopping rule must be explicit.

Examples of AI-controlled instruments and workflows

Materials characterization

NIST lists autonomous projects involving X-ray diffraction, neutron scattering, scanning electron microscopy, and other characterization methods. In these systems, AI can decide which sample or measurement condition is most informative, trigger the acquisition, analyze the result, and choose the next characterization step.

Thin-film synthesis

NLR describes sputter deposition of Zn-Ti-N thin-film nitrides controlled by Bayesian optimization. In-situ optical-plasma feedback supplies measurements while the planner selects deposition conditions. This arrangement lets the system search a process space without requiring an operator to manually set every combination.

Electrochemical impedance

Another NLR example uses autonomous temperature- and pressure-dependent electrochemical impedance measurements. The system varies environmental conditions, measures the response, and updates its understanding of the material as the campaign proceeds.

Gas-sensor studies

NLR also reports temperature- and time-dependent studies of oxide-semiconductor gas sensors. Automated control is useful here because sensor response can depend on both a changing environment and the history of prior exposures.

Biotechnology workflows

The National Academies’ 2024 workshop examined AI combined with robotic and remotely controlled equipment for biological discovery and development. Biological automation raises additional concerns: biosecurity, personnel safety, environmental release, contamination, and data integrity must be addressed alongside the technical control problem.

How a self-driving laboratory works

  1. Define the objective and constraints. Specify the property or hypothesis being investigated, allowable materials, operating ranges, budget, timing, and conditions that require a human decision.
  2. Register samples and equipment. Give each sample a persistent identifier and record instrument capabilities, calibration state, consumables, and physical locations.
  3. Acquire an initial data set. Run baseline measurements or a designed starting set so the model has observations covering the relevant region.
  4. Analyze measurements. Convert raw signals into validated features or predictions while preserving the original files, settings, timestamps, and software versions.
  5. Select the next action. An optimizer chooses a measurement, synthesis condition, or characterization step using the current model and uncertainty.
  6. Check safety and feasibility. A rules engine verifies limits, interlocks, sample availability, instrument status, and waste capacity before execution.
  7. Execute and monitor. Robots and instruments perform the operation, report status, and stop or escalate when a fault or out-of-range signal appears.
  8. Update and decide whether to stop. The new result is added to the data set. The campaign ends when the target, information criterion, resource limit, or human review condition is met.

Which instruments can be connected to AI?

There is no single instrument category that defines an autonomous laboratory. Coverage depends on whether the device exposes reliable control and data interfaces.

Instrument group AI-enabled functions Common integration challenge
Spectrometers and diffractometers Peak extraction, phase identification, adaptive scans, and experiment selection. Large files, instrument-specific formats, and calibration drift.
Microscopes and imaging systems Object detection, segmentation, defect classification, and automated fields of view. Focus, lighting, sample positioning, and image-label quality.
Electrochemical analyzers Adaptive voltage or frequency programs, impedance modeling, and condition optimization. Safe electrical limits, changing sample state, and temperature or pressure coupling.
Deposition and process equipment Real-time control from plasma, optical, pressure, or thickness feedback. Fast control loops, sensor latency, and emergency shutdowns.
Liquid handlers and robotic workcells Dispensing, dilution, sample routing, and coordinated scheduling. Consumables, deck calibration, contamination, and irregular labware.
Source-measure units and electronic test equipment Programmatic sweeps, automated characterization, and generated control interfaces. Driver compatibility, electrical protection, and code validation.

Infrastructure and standards required

NIST groups autonomous-laboratory requirements into four connected areas: sample management; instrument control and communication; data and knowledge management; and algorithm or model integration. All four must work together. A sophisticated model cannot compensate for missing sample identity, uncalibrated equipment, or data that cannot be read reliably.

Sample management

The system needs persistent identifiers, locations, chain-of-custody records, material quantities, compatibility rules, and waste tracking. Physical automation must also account for consumables and replenishment.

Instrument control and communication

Interfaces should expose commands, measurements, status, errors, and safe-stop functions. MQTT, SiLA, and EPICS are among the communication and control efforts used in laboratory settings, but the autonomous-laboratory ecosystem is not yet standardized. Multi-vendor integration therefore requires adapters, testing, and ongoing maintenance.

Data and knowledge management

Store raw data together with instrument settings, calibration information, sample identity, timestamps, intermediate analyses, model versions, and negative results. Provenance is what allows a scientist to reproduce a result or discover that a model learned from a faulty run.

Algorithm integration

Models need versioning, uncertainty estimates, validation data, access controls, and a defined path for human review. The planner should be able to explain which constraints it applied and why it selected a particular next experiment, even when the underlying model is complex.

Benefits and trade-offs

Potential benefit Why it matters Trade-off or prerequisite
Speed and scale Robots can run many more iterations and explore larger parameter spaces than a person operating instruments manually. More runs require reliable consumables, maintenance, scheduling, and waste handling.
Repeatability Software-defined procedures make repeated measurements more consistent and produce machine-readable records. Consistency is only useful when calibration and metadata are correct.
Information efficiency Active learning and Bayesian optimization can select experiments expected to be especially informative. A poor objective or biased starting data can steer the search away from useful science.
Data quality and provenance Connected systems can capture settings, raw data, intermediate analyses, and negative results automatically. Interfaces and schemas must be designed before deployment; otherwise gaps are copied at machine speed.
Operating cost Unattended operation can reduce repetitive labor per experiment. Integration, validation, safety controls, software expertise, and hardware upkeep remain substantial costs.

The OECD characterizes laboratory automation as a multi-billion-US-dollar industry, yet it also notes that many laboratory tasks remain unautomated. That contrast reflects the real economics: automation is mature in selected, repetitive workflows, not across every activity in a laboratory.

What still requires human scientists?

  • Choosing a valid question and objective: An optimizer can maximize a supplied metric, but it cannot determine whether that metric represents an important scientific result.
  • Handling unexpected behavior: A strange signal may be a discovery, contamination, sensor drift, a software error, or a damaged sample. Distinguishing those cases requires judgment and often a new control experiment.
  • Model validation: Scientists must test whether predictions generalize, quantify uncertainty, inspect failure cases, and verify that labels and reference data are appropriate.
  • Safety and compliance: Hazardous materials, biological agents, high voltage, pressure, radiation, and waste require approved procedures, physical interlocks, training, and accountable supervision.
  • Physical upkeep: Robots still need consumables, cleaning, calibration, repairs, and waste removal. The OECD notes that many systems operate inside protective enclosures and continue to depend on people for these tasks.
  • Scientific interpretation: Automated results need to be placed in the context of prior knowledge, competing explanations, and limitations that may not appear in the instrument data.

  1. What is the autonomy level? Is the system advisory, supervised, or genuinely closed-loop, and where are mandatory review points?
  2. How broad is instrument coverage? Does it control one device, a single vendor ecosystem, or multiple vendors through open interfaces?
  3. Is the data ready for modeling? Check timestamped raw files, complete metadata, calibration records, provenance, and compatibility with analysis tools.
  4. What optimization is supported? Distinguish fixed protocols from active learning, Bayesian optimization, or other methods that select experiments dynamically.
  5. How are safety and validation handled? Look for audit trails, uncertainty reporting, interlocks, permissions, rollback procedures, and documented responses to unexpected results.
  6. What is the operational burden? Count setup, programming, calibration, consumables, waste, maintenance, staff training, and integration work—not just the instrument purchase.

A practical adoption path

Start with a measurable, repetitive workflow

Choose a protocol with stable samples, clear acceptance criteria, and a limited operating envelope. Automating a small, well-understood process produces better evidence than attempting to connect an entire laboratory at once.

Make the data and interfaces reliable

Standardize sample identifiers, metadata, file formats, timestamps, and error codes. Add read-only data capture before allowing software to change instrument settings.

Add supervised control

Introduce programmatic scans, scheduling, and robotic handling with a person approving batches. Test fault recovery, calibration drift, network failures, and safe shutdown under realistic conditions.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Introduce adaptive planning

Once execution and data capture are trustworthy, let an optimizer choose among preapproved conditions. Compare its decisions with a conventional design and define an explicit stop rule.

Validate before unattended operation

Run known reference materials, duplicate experiments, and challenge cases. Review every automated decision, confirm provenance, and obtain the safety and compliance approvals required for the domain.

Monitor the complete system

Track instrument health, model performance, sample inventory, consumables, waste, and human overrides. Autonomous operation is a continuing engineering and scientific process, not a one-time software installation.

How much of laboratory work can AI automate?

There is no authoritative percentage for all scientific-instrument work. Automation potential varies with instrument type, sample variability, workflow structure, safety constraints, data quality, and the maturity of software interfaces. A high-throughput liquid-handling protocol may be almost entirely machine-executable, while an investigation involving irregular samples and ambiguous signals may remain largely human-led.
