These tools can improve how people make and coordinate decisions, but their results depend on reliable data, integration with existing workflows, and human oversight. Most fleet AI supports people operating conventional vehicles; it does not make a truck driverless.
Where AI fits in commercial vehicle operations
The OECD identifies predictive maintenance and asset management, route optimization and scheduling, and safety monitoring and driver assistance among the leading AI use cases for fleets. In practice, AI is often one component within a wider set of vehicle, camera, GPS, telematics, and logistics systems. Its operational role is to analyze information, flag patterns or exceptions, and help staff decide what to do next.

That distinction matters: an alert or recommendation is not the same as a completed repair, a safer driving behavior, or a more efficient delivery. The value appears when a dispatcher, technician, safety manager, or driver can act on the information in time.

How AI changes fleet work
Predictive maintenance and vehicle uptime
Predictive maintenance analyzes vehicle health or performance data to identify possible faults before they cause unplanned downtime. Rather than relying only on fixed service intervals or waiting for a failure, a fleet may use alerts to investigate a vehicle and schedule work based on its reported condition.

Mack Trucks describes GuardDog Connect as an AI-powered predictive platform that analyzes truck health and performance data and alerts support staff to potential issues, sometimes before a dashboard warning appears. Mack also reports that its AutoSend software service completed approximately 150,000 successful updates in 2025, which the company estimates helped customers avoid 115,000 days of downtime. Those are Mack-reported results for its service, not a forecast of savings for other truck makes or fleets.
The practical change is earlier notice and the chance to coordinate diagnosis and service. A prediction still needs a qualified person to assess the alert and decide whether, when, and how to intervene.

Routes, schedules, and load planning
AI-assisted optimization can help assess route and schedule choices across more variables than static rules alone. Logistics teams can also use analytics to support load planning, forecast demand, and spot unusual operating patterns. These tools may help planners revise decisions as conditions or shipment needs change, but their recommendations are only as useful as the data and operational constraints they account for.

Safety monitoring and driver coaching
AI video telematics combines vehicle video with analytics that can flag driving events or behaviors for review. Safety teams can use flagged events to guide coaching or incident review, while a human reviewer provides context rather than treating an automated flag as a final judgment. Verizon Connect lists GPS tracking and video telematics among established fleet technology categories in its 2026 Fleet Technology Trends Report.
Video monitoring also affects employees. Before adopting it, an operator should set clear policies for what is recorded, who can access footage, how long it is retained, and how alerts will be reviewed. Drivers should understand the monitoring and how coaching decisions are made. Safety and coaching improvements reported by technology users are survey findings, not guaranteed outcomes of installing cameras.

Penske describes its Supply Chain Insight platform as providing customers with a unified view across warehouses, in-transit shipments, and dedicated fleets. Executive vice president of operations Mike Medeiros characterized that view as “a single pane of glass.” This is Penske’s description of its own platform, not an independent assessment of every logistics system.

- 【WiFi Using Note】Please note that each time you want to connect the APP to the dash cam, you need to long press the " ◀ " button to turn on WiFi before you can connect. ❗❗❗If the WiFi is not connected to the APP for more than 5 minutes, the dash cam will automatically turn off the WiFi function. This measure is to prevent the dash cam from overheating.
What published figures show—and what they do not
Available figures describe different populations and outcomes. Vendor survey responses, a manufacturer’s service results, and a logistics company’s summary of a survey are not interchangeable measures of AI’s effect on the industry.
| Source and date | Reported figure | What the figure describes |
|---|---|---|
| Verizon Connect, 2026 Fleet Technology Trends Report, published February 24, 2026 | 46% | Surveyed fleet professionals who use video telematics; Verizon Connect says adoption rose 10 percentage points since 2023. |
| Verizon Connect, 2026 Fleet Technology Trends Report | 74% | Users of AI-powered video telematics who reported improved driver safety. |
| Verizon Connect, 2026 Fleet Technology Trends Report | 41% | Users of AI-powered video telematics who said it significantly improves driver coaching. |
| Verizon Connect, 2026 Fleet Technology Trends Report | 80% | Fleet professionals who said they rely on GPS fleet tracking. |
| Mack Trucks, March 18, 2026 | Approximately 150,000 updates; an estimated 115,000 days of downtime avoided | Mack’s company-reported AutoSend software updates and estimated customer downtime avoided in 2025. |
| Penske Logistics summary of its 2025 Transportation Leaders Survey | 36% planning; 35% route optimization; 34% operational efficiency; 32% driver safety | Respondents reporting AI-driven improvement in the listed areas, as summarized by Penske Logistics. |
Verizon Connect’s figures are from a vendor-sponsored survey announcement, not an independent causal study. Mack’s figures concern Mack’s own connected-services results. Penske’s figures are its summary of a 2025 survey. The OECD’s 2026 review identifies use cases, but the available sources do not provide one independent, apples-to-apples statistic for overall productivity or savings caused by AI across commercial fleets.
AI fleet tools are not the same as autonomous trucks
AI used for maintenance alerts, dispatch planning, video review, or shipment visibility can support a fleet whose vehicles are still driven by people. Automated driving is a separate application with different safety and integration requirements. The U.S. Department of Transportation discusses safe integration of AI into automated driving systems alongside other transportation applications such as computer vision and predictive analytics; that does not mean an ordinary fleet AI deployment removes the driver.
What to assess before adopting a fleet AI system
Start with the operational problem, not the AI label. Video telematics, predictive vehicle-health services, route optimization, logistics visibility platforms, and automated driving are different categories; they should be evaluated against alternatives that address the same job.
- Purpose: Identify the problem to improve, such as earlier fault detection, safety coaching, route planning, load utilization, or shipment visibility.
- Compatibility: Confirm which vehicles, cameras, telematics devices, and software systems the solution can work with, and what integration is required.
- Data quality and coverage: Check whether the data is accurate and representative of your vehicles and operations. Penske describes a framework for monitoring data quality; poor inputs can weaken forecasts and recommendations.
- Actionability: Determine who receives each alert, who reviews it, and how it is escalated. An alert that no one owns may not improve operations.
- Human oversight: Establish how staff verify recommendations and retain authority over maintenance, coaching, dispatch, and safety decisions.
- Workforce policy: For video or behavior monitoring, communicate what is captured, how it will be handled, and how it may inform coaching or incident review.
- Reliability and protection: Assess connectivity needs, cybersecurity, system reliability, and what happens when data or a service is unavailable.
- Fleet-specific evaluation: Record a baseline for the chosen problem, then measure the same operational outcomes after implementation under your own conditions.
Government materials can help explain transportation policy, safety, and technology-deployment goals, but they do not certify the performance of a named commercial product.
