Yes, an old Galaxy phone may be usable as a Jellyfin server for a modest, carefully matched setup—but the available information does not establish that any particular Galaxy can run Jellyfin reliably or transcode a specific media library. The most realistic target is serving files that your playback device can play directly, with storage and network limitations checked first. Samsung’s Galaxy Upcycling at Home is a separate SmartThings sensor feature, not a Jellyfin hosting mode.
Galaxy Upcycling at Home is not Jellyfin hosting
Samsung announced Galaxy Upcycling at Home on April 21, 2021, as a way to reuse eligible Galaxy phones as SmartThings-connected sensors. The announcement described sound alerts for events such as a baby crying, a dog barking, a cat meowing, or a knock, plus light-level detection for automations. It named S, Note, and Z series phones released from 2018, including the S9 and Note9, running Android 9 or later, while warning that availability could vary by carrier. Those are historical criteria from the announcement, not a guarantee of current availability in every market or on every account, app version, or device. Samsung’s 2021 announcement and its 2025 US sustainability toolkit describe the SmartThings sensor use; neither is a method for installing a Jellyfin server.
Jellyfin is an independent media-server route: the phone would need to run compatible server software, keep media accessible, and remain reachable by clients on your network. The title’s “gave up” framing does not change the technical distinction—Upcycling is for sensing and automation; Jellyfin is for serving media.
When a phone is most likely to be practical
The key distinction is whether the client can play the original file itself. With direct play, the server sends the media without converting the video; this avoids much of the compute-heavy work of transcoding. If a client cannot play a file or its format, Jellyfin may convert it on the server, and video transcoding can be demanding. HDR-to-SDR tone mapping is especially demanding, according to Jellyfin’s hardware guidance. The official client list includes an Android app, but that does not mean every client supports every codec or that every Galaxy can convert unsupported media.

For a phone-based server, treat direct play as the sensible first target, not a guaranteed result. Actual performance depends on the Galaxy model, the server installation method, the media formats, the playback client, and the network. No stream count, library size, or transcoding capability can be responsibly promised without those specifics.
What Jellyfin’s hardware guidance means for a Galaxy
Jellyfin’s general recommendations are aimed at conventional server hardware, not minimum requirements validated on Android phones. Its hardware page recommends 8 GB of system RAM, a 100 GB SSD for the operating system, Jellyfin files, and transcoding cache, and gigabit Ethernet or faster. It says Wi-Fi is not recommended for optimal server networking. These figures are a useful indication of the resources a typical deployment may benefit from; they are not evidence that a Galaxy with less memory or different storage cannot serve files, nor a benchmark showing that a phone meets the recommendations.

- Carrier: This phone is locked to Tracfone, which means this device can only be used on the Tracfone wireless network. Tracfone plan required, activating is easy, just 3 steps.
- DISPLAY: Immersive viewing on a 6.7-inch super-bright 120Hz display with powerful stereo speakers and Bass Boost for cinematic entertainment.
- CAMERA SYSTEM: Advanced 50MP Quad Pixel camera captures sharp, detailed photos and videos in any lighting condition
- PERFORMANCE: Lightning-fast 5G connectivity paired with a powerful processor and RAM Boost for smooth multitasking.
- BATTERY LIFE: Long-lasting 5000mAh battery with TurboPower charging technology delivers hours of power in minutes.
A phone may be an experiment for a small, direct-play library, but it is a poor fit if you require dependable transcoding, HDR tone mapping, or the same headroom expected from a conventional server. The published recommendations also cannot establish reliability, power use, or performance for an unspecified phone.
Plan storage before installing anything
Jellyfin distinguishes between media storage and the server’s own files. Media can be stored wherever sequential read throughput exceeds the media bitrate, including on a network share; Jellyfin recommends SSD storage for its own files because they require random access. Internal phone storage may be limited, so external storage is a possible alternative only if the specific Galaxy supports the required connection. Samsung documents connecting another device through a USB OTG adapter, but that does not establish that every Galaxy, adapter, drive format, or power arrangement will work. Check the phone’s connector and OTG support, the drive’s format, and whether the drive needs more power than the phone can provide. Samsung’s Galaxy connection-options guide covers the adapter connection; it is not a compatibility list for every drive.

Jellyfin recommends gigabit Ethernet or faster and does not recommend Wi-Fi for optimal server networking. Many phones lack a built-in Ethernet port, so a wired connection would depend on compatible adapters and the phone’s support for them; Wi-Fi may be the practical option but is not the project’s preferred server connection. A network storage share introduces its own network dependency. In either case, usable playback depends on the phone being reachable and the connection keeping up with the media bitrate.

How to decide whether to try it
- Check the exact Galaxy. Identify its model, Android version, connector, available storage, and whether it supports the server installation approach you intend to use. No tested installation method for a specific phone is identified.
- Start with a direct-play file. Use a client and media format the client can play natively; avoid assuming the phone can transcode formats it cannot serve directly.
- Choose storage deliberately. Compare internal capacity with a compatible OTG drive or network share, and verify throughput and power requirements for the actual setup.
- Check network access. Prefer wired gigabit networking where the phone and adapters support it; otherwise assess Wi-Fi in the place the server will run.
- Set expectations modestly. If the setup needs frequent conversion, HDR tone mapping, or assured service for multiple viewers, Jellyfin’s general hardware advice points toward conventional server hardware rather than an unverified phone build.
