You can run many classic J2ME Java games on Android with J2ME Loader, an emulator with a virtual keypad and per-game settings. Install the emulator, import the game’s .jar file, then tap Start. Try the JAR by itself first; keep a matching .jad file in case the game or emulator asks for it.
What you need
- An Android device running Android 4.0 or newer, the minimum listed by the J2ME Loader project.
- J2ME Loader, available through its Google Play listing or another trusted distribution of the open-source project.
- A J2ME game’s JAR file from a source that gives you the right to use it. A game being old or described as abandonware does not establish permission to download or play it.
Install a JAR game in J2ME Loader
- Install and open J2ME Loader.
- Tap the + icon.
- Browse to the downloaded
.jarfile and select it. - Wait for the emulator to import the game.
- Tap Start to launch it. In the example flow described by the Jar4Android walkthrough, Start is pressed twice.
- If needed, adjust the virtual keypad, screen scaling, or other settings for that game.
Do you need a JAD file?
Usually, try importing the JAR first. In Java ME, a MIDlet suite is distributed as a Java archive (JAR) and a Java Application Descriptor (JAD): the JAR contains the program’s classes, resources, and manifest, while the JAD carries attributes used to identify, retrieve, and install the MIDlets, according to Oracle’s Java ME documentation. A community walkthrough demonstrates selecting a JAR directly in J2ME Loader. If the game or emulator requests a descriptor, use the matching JAD file when available; a JAD is not a substitute for the game’s JAR.
Set up the old keypad for a touchscreen
J2ME Loader includes a virtual keyboard and per-application settings. If the game’s original keypad controls do not suit your screen, open that game’s settings and adjust its key layout and screen scale. Store user feedback mentions buttons that can feel too small or too large and presses that sometimes fail; changing the layout is a sensible first check before concluding that the JAR is damaged.
Fix slow performance or flickering
- The game runs slowly: the project README recommends disabling filtering.
- Images flicker: try enabling Immediate processing mode, another setting recommended by the project README.
- Controls seem unreliable: adjust the per-game key layout and screen scale, then try the game again.
These adjustments can help with particular games, but they do not guarantee that every title will run correctly.

What games are compatible?
Compatibility varies by title. The J2ME Loader project maintains separate lists of tested touchscreen games, non-touchscreen games, and games with bugs. Its README says the emulator supports most 2D and 3D games, while the Google Play listing qualifies 3D support and says Mascot Capsule 3D games do not work. A game may still fail if it depends on a handset-specific API, graphics mode, or control scheme that the emulator does not reproduce.
The Google Play listing records an update date of 7 August 2024. That date identifies the listing’s stated update, not a guarantee about future maintenance or compatibility with every current Android device.
