A model may suggest a nonexistent package name that an attacker has registered, or an agent may act on hostile instructions hidden in repository content. These are distinct from an AI simply generating insecure code: a supply-chain attack involves adversarial compromise or manipulation of a component, process, or trust relationship that can affect downstream software or users.
How an AI coding assistant can change the supply chain
Software supply chains include the dependencies a project uses, the tools and people involved in building it, and the processes that deliver software to users. Coding assistants add another layer: they can propose code and packages, read project materials, and—when configured as agents—make changes or use tools. That can make development faster, but it also creates additional points where an unverified suggestion or untrusted instruction may influence a project.

The consequences depend on what the assistant can access and do. A chat tool that only returns text presents a different exposure from an agent that reads repository files, runs shell commands, edits code, or has access to credentials. Product design, configuration, permissions, and human review all matter; the existence of a risk pathway does not mean every assistant is vulnerable in the same way.

Four pathways from suggestion to downstream risk
| Pathway | Entry point and condition | Potential consequence | Key control |
|---|---|---|---|
| Hallucinated package name | A model suggests a package that does not exist; an attacker registers that name, and a developer installs it. | A malicious dependency enters the project and may affect software or users downstream. | Confirm the package, owner, version, and provenance in the intended registry before adding it. |
| Insecure generated code | A developer accepts code that has a security weakness or does not follow secure practices. | A vulnerability may enter the project and spread if the code is reused in shared libraries, templates, or products. | Review the change and run normal tests, code review, and security checks. |
| Prompt injection through project content | An assistant processes attacker-controlled comments, issues, documentation, configuration, or tool output; risk rises if it has broad permissions. | Depending on the agent’s access, malicious instructions may lead to secret exposure, unauthorized file changes, command execution, or external interactions. | Treat repository-provided instructions as untrusted and restrict access, execution, and approval boundaries. |
| Compromised or malicious extension or integration | A workflow enables an untrusted IDE extension, plugin, skill, model integration, or external tool. | The component may influence suggestions or actions and create another trust boundary. | Inspect components before enabling them and grant only the access needed for the task. |
Package hallucinations and slopsquatting
Models predict plausible names from patterns in their training data and the prompt. A suggested name may look like a real library while referring to no package in the project’s intended registry. An attacker can register a guessed or observed name and publish malicious contents in the hope that a developer will install it. Registering hallucinated package names for this purpose is commonly called slopsquatting.

USENIX Security 2025 researchers examined package hallucinations across 16 popular large language models and 576,000 generated code samples. Those numbers describe the scope of the researchers’ evaluation; they do not show what share of AI-assisted development is vulnerable or how often a malicious package is successfully installed in production.
Insecure code is a security risk, not automatically an attack
An assistant can produce code with a known class of weakness or omit a secure practice. That is a code-quality and security risk, but it does not by itself establish malicious intent or a supply-chain attack. If insecure code is accepted and then copied into a shared library, template, example, or product, it can nevertheless carry a weakness to downstream users. Guidance from Germany’s BSI and France’s ANSSI discusses security risks associated with AI coding assistants; conventional supply-chain guidance also addresses vulnerable third-party components and compromised development or delivery processes.

Prompt injection and tool access
Coding agents may interpret more than a developer’s direct prompt. They can encounter instructions in source comments, issue descriptions, documentation, configuration files, extensions, skills, or tool outputs. An attacker may craft content to manipulate the agent. If the agent can read sensitive files, access secrets, write to the repository, run commands, or contact external systems, the possible consequences go beyond a bad code suggestion.
This is a conditional risk, not a claim that all agents can be exploited through every input channel. The relevant question is what untrusted content the assistant processes and what actions it is authorized to take. Cloud Security Alliance and BSI/ANSSI materials describe these risks in AI coding environments, but a product-specific vulnerability or exploit claim requires evidence for the named product and version.

How to reduce the risk in an AI-assisted workflow
- Verify each suggested dependency before installation. Check that it exists in the intended registry and that the package name, owner, version, and provenance match the component the project needs. A plausible name in generated code is not verification.
- Review dependencies as well as code. Use dependency review and software composition analysis where appropriate. A clean vulnerability scan does not prove that a newly suggested package is legitimate; package identity and provenance need their own checks.
- Review generated changes like contributions from an untrusted source. Examine what changed, run the project’s normal tests, and apply ordinary code review and security checks before merging or releasing.
- Keep permissions narrow. Do not provide secrets, sensitive files, shell access, write access, network access, or external tool integrations unless the task requires them. Where an action could affect the project or outside systems, require an appropriate approval step.
- Inspect project instructions and extensions. Review repository-controlled instructions, agent configuration, and third-party extensions before enabling or relying on them. Treat their contents as untrusted until checked.
- Retain established supply-chain protections. Validate packages and updates, protect integrity and provenance, use signed software artifacts, and follow defined secure development practices. CISA Enduring Security Framework supplier and developer guidance provides a broader baseline for these controls; it is not specific to AI and should be applied to AI-enabled workflows as part of normal supply-chain security.
What the evidence does—and does not—establish
The documented mechanisms show how assistants can alter the path by which dependencies, code, and instructions reach projects. They do not establish how prevalent successful attacks are across the software industry, or which pathway is most frequent or most damaging. The available evidence supports treating these as distinct risks and securing the workflow at the points where developers approve dependencies, accept code, trust inputs, and grant tools permission to act.
