How AI Agents Use Evidence in Software Reverse Engineering

An agent that fills gaps with plausible guesses can produce a convincing but false model of a program. In reverse engineering, that is worse than admitting uncertainty: downstream developers may build integrations, security decisions, or forensic conclusions on behavior the software never had.

Reliable reverse engineering treats every conclusion as an evidence-backed claim. The agent preserves the original inputs and environment, separates observations from inferences, tests competing explanations, validates the method for its specific purpose, and reports what remains unknown.

Why guessing is uniquely dangerous in reverse engineering

Reverse engineering starts with incomplete access. The USENIX observational study of practitioners describes the work as complex and notes that engineers commonly lack the original source code, the developers who wrote it, and internal documentation. An agent therefore has to reconstruct behavior from traces such as inputs, outputs, files, network exchanges, timing, logs, or disassembled instructions.

Those traces rarely determine one explanation by themselves. A response that appears to indicate a feature could instead come from a cache, a compatibility branch, a default value, an authentication state, a platform difference, or a later software revision. A fluent language model can turn one plausible interpretation into a definitive-sounding description before anyone notices that alternative explanations were never tested.

  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

The harm compounds when the inferred model is reused. A wrong API contract can corrupt data; a wrong security assumption can hide an attack path; and a wrong forensic interpretation can misidentify what happened on a device. A cautious “not established from the available evidence” is operationally safer than a detailed story unsupported by a reproducible observation.

Reverse engineering is a method, not a quick reading exercise

Defence Research and Development Canada’s 2018 abstract describes software reverse engineering as “a time-consuming task that not every programmer can perform after a few hours of training.” Its work presents a high-level methodology rather than an intuition-based shortcut. The implication for an AI agent is practical: speed and eloquence do not replace controlled observation, documentation, and review.

Separate what happened from what it might mean

An observation is directly recorded: “With version 4.2.1, configuration X, and input Y, the process returned status 403 after 180 milliseconds.” An inference is an explanation: “The process rejected Y because the account lacked permission.” The first can be checked against the record; the second needs additional tests. Mixing the two makes a hypothesis look like a fact and prevents reviewers from seeing where uncertainty enters.

An evidence-first workflow for an AI agent

The following sequence works for black-box behavior, binary analysis, protocol reconstruction, and digital-investigation tasks. It is deliberately audit-friendly so another engineer can repeat the work without relying on the agent’s memory.

1. Freeze the inputs and execution context

Keep an untouched copy of every input artifact and record cryptographic hashes where appropriate. Capture the exact software version or build identifier, operating system, architecture, enabled features, locale, time zone, user and permission state, relevant environment variables, and dependency versions. For a service, record endpoint, request headers, authentication state, and timestamps. For a device image, preserve acquisition details and write-protection status.

Store the configuration alongside the result, not in a separate notebook that can be lost. If the program is updated, begin a new evidence set instead of silently replacing the old one. NIST’s 2022 review warns that software revisions can change the meaning of artifacts, so a result from one release must not be generalized automatically to another.

2. Build an observation ledger

Give each experiment an identifier. Record the exact command or UI action, input bytes or files, preconditions, output bytes, exit code, logs, timing, side effects, and any environmental variation. Preserve negative results and errors; they often distinguish a real rule from an accidental success.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Use wording that a second person can verify. “The file was changed” is weaker than “SHA-256 changed from A to B; size increased by 128 bytes; modification time advanced at 14:03:22 UTC.” If an output was inferred from a screenshot, state that limitation rather than presenting it as a raw value.

3. Label hypotheses and confidence

For each observed pattern, write one or more candidate explanations. Mark them as hypotheses, not findings, and state why each is plausible. A useful record contains:

  • Observation: the direct, repeatable event.
  • Hypothesis: a possible mechanism that would produce it.
  • Confidence: a calibrated level tied to the amount and quality of evidence.
  • Discriminator: the next observation that would support one hypothesis over another.

Do not use confidence as a substitute for evidence. “High confidence” should mean that independent tests eliminate credible alternatives, not merely that the explanation sounds familiar.

4. Design tests that distinguish explanations

Change one relevant factor at a time when practical. To test whether a 403 response is permission-related, repeat the request with the same payload under accounts with different permissions while holding the version, endpoint, and headers constant. To test whether a file change is caused by a timestamp normalizer rather than content processing, vary content while observing metadata and compare runs with clock settings controlled.

Use differential testing: compare two inputs that differ in one meaningful property, two builds, or two execution environments. Use tracing, logs, disassembly, controlled fault injection, or protocol captures when they can answer a specific question. Every tool output is evidence with conditions, not an oracle; record tool version and collection settings.

5. Repeat and seek independent reproduction

Run the same test more than once and report variation. A behavior that occurs once may be a race, cache state, network failure, or corrupted input. Where practical, ask another person or an isolated environment to reproduce the result from the ledger. Independent reproduction catches undocumented setup assumptions and transcription errors.

6. Check evidence boundaries before concluding

NIST’s 2022 review identifies several limits that should appear in the final assessment. Digital-investigation techniques can be reliable when used appropriately, but not all evidence may be discovered, recovery can include extraneous material, and software revisions can alter artifact meaning. Therefore, absence of an artifact is not automatically proof that an event did not occur, and recovered material is not automatically relevant to the question.

Look for truncation, missing logs, overwritten storage, clock skew, encoding conversions, sampling gaps, and collection failures. Distinguish “not observed” from “observed to be absent.” If the input was incomplete or altered, narrow the conclusion to what the preserved material can support.

7. Report a conclusion with its limits

State the behavior established by the tests, the conditions under which it was established, the evidence identifiers supporting it, and the alternatives that remain possible. Explain what would change the conclusion, such as testing another version or obtaining an unredacted trace. A report that exposes unresolved ambiguity is more useful than one that hides it behind a single narrative.

How to validate an inferred behavior

Validation is not a ceremonial final paragraph. It produces evidence that the method and the resulting claim are fit for their intended purpose.

Define the purpose and requirements

Write the question in operational terms: “Determine whether build 8.0.3 rejects requests lacking header Z,” or “Identify whether this artifact records a successful login.” Define acceptable error, scope, data formats, platforms, and security constraints. A method suitable for debugging may not be suitable for a legal or incident-response conclusion.

Assess risks and misleading results

List ways the procedure could mislead: cached responses, nondeterministic scheduling, hidden feature flags, anti-analysis behavior, parser recovery, clock errors, contaminated samples, or a tool that silently normalizes data. Decide how each risk will be detected or bounded. The UK Forensic Science Regulator’s guidance specifically calls for requirements, risk assessment, acceptance criteria, a validation plan, recorded outcomes, and attention to misleading results.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Set acceptance criteria before testing

Criteria might require a minimum number of repeatable runs, agreement across independent environments, known positive and negative controls, or a defined false-positive rate. For a parser inference, include files that should be accepted, rejected, and malformed. For a protocol claim, include valid, invalid, boundary, and replayed messages. Do not adjust the threshold after seeing a convenient result.

Execute the validation plan and retain outcomes

Record every run, including failures and deviations. Preserve representative inputs, raw outputs, scripts, configuration, and analysis notes so an independent reviewer can inspect the chain from evidence to conclusion. The regulator defines validation as “The process of providing objective evidence that a method, process or device is fit for the specific purpose intended.” That definition requires objective records, not confidence in the analyst.

Revalidate after meaningful change

A new software build, operating system, compiler, dependency, hardware architecture, configuration, or collection tool can invalidate assumptions. Compare versions rather than silently carrying forward a prior model. If behavior differs, maintain separate version-scoped conclusions and identify which observations changed.

What counts as strong support for a conclusion?

Evidence characteristic Strong practice Weak practice
Traceability Each claim points to preserved inputs, outputs, logs, hashes, and experiment identifiers. A narrative summary with no raw records or unclear provenance.
Reproducibility Another operator can recreate the conditions and obtain the same result or documented variation. A one-off demonstration whose setup is unavailable.
Validation Requirements, risks, controls, acceptance criteria, and outcomes are recorded. “It worked in a test” without defining what success means.
Uncertainty Observations, inferences, confidence, and unresolved alternatives are explicitly separated. Speculation written in the same voice as measured behavior.
Version control Claims identify the exact release, platform, and configuration tested. A behavior generalized across undocumented revisions.
Independent review Materials and reasoning are available for scrutiny by someone who did not run the original test. Conclusions that depend on private context or an unverifiable tool state.

ISO/IEC 27042:2015 says analysis should address “continuity, validity, reproducibility, and repeatability” and record enough information for independent scrutiny. It also says a newly devised method should be shown to be “fit for purpose.” These are practical quality gates: preserve the chain of custody or provenance, demonstrate that the method answers the stated question, and make repetition possible.

Common failure modes and recovery steps

Confusing a familiar pattern with proof

An agent may recognize a status code, file signature, or function name and import behavior from another product. Treat recognition as a hypothesis generator. Run tests that could disprove the analogy, and cite only behavior observed in the target software.

Overfitting to one successful input

One request can pass because of a cache, a default account, or a hidden prerequisite. Add boundary, negative, and repeated cases. If the behavior changes with state, document the state transition instead of describing a universal rule.

Ignoring version and configuration drift

When a user reports a mismatch, first compare build, platform, flags, dependencies, and data. Re-run the minimal discriminating experiment on both environments. Do not “fix” the report by blending results from incompatible versions.

Treating recovered material as automatically authentic or relevant

Check acquisition integrity, timestamps, encoding, truncation, and whether recovery tools add extraneous fragments. NIST’s cautions mean that recovered bytes can be useful without proving who created them, when they were created, or that they answer the investigative question.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Filling an information gap with a confident sentence

Replace unsupported certainty with a bounded statement: “The available trace shows A under condition B; it does not distinguish between mechanisms C and D.” Then name the lowest-cost test that would distinguish them. This keeps the model useful while preventing downstream users from mistaking a guess for an interface contract.

A practical reporting template

An agent can produce a concise, reviewable report by using the following order:

  1. Question and scope: define the behavior or artifact being assessed, target versions, platforms, and exclusions.
  2. Materials and provenance: list hashes, acquisition details, configurations, tools, and timestamps.
  3. Observations: present raw results and repeatability, including failures and negative cases.
  4. Hypotheses: state candidate mechanisms and the evidence for and against each.
  5. Validation: describe controls, acceptance criteria, risks, misleading-result checks, and outcomes.
  6. Conclusion: state only what the evidence supports, with version and condition qualifiers.
  7. Unresolved questions: identify missing evidence and the experiment or artifact that would reduce uncertainty.

This format lets a reviewer challenge a premise without discarding the entire analysis. It also gives future investigators a starting point when a new release, platform, or artifact changes the behavior.

Decision rule for agents working with incomplete evidence

When evidence is incomplete, do not choose between silence and fabrication. Provide the strongest bounded answer available: describe the verified observation, explain the plausible interpretations, quantify or qualify uncertainty, and recommend a discriminating test. If the decision is high-stakes—security, safety, legal attribution, or irreversible data changes—escalate for human review before acting on an unvalidated inference.

The central discipline is simple but demanding: preserve first, observe second, infer third, test alternatives, validate the method, and communicate the limits. Reverse engineering becomes dependable when every important sentence can be traced back to conditions another person can inspect and, where practical, reproduce.
