Agentic AI turns browsing from a sequence of pages you navigate yourself into work you can delegate: an agent can interpret a request, gather information across websites, and sometimes take actions such as filling out a form or making a booking. The shift is real but uneven. Capabilities, human controls, privacy terms, and availability vary by product, and announced features are not necessarily available to everyone.
What agentic browsing means
An AI that answers a question about one webpage is an assistant. Agentic browsing goes further: the system uses browser or search context to plan and carry out steps across pages, interact with websites, and in some cases work with a signed-in browser session. Some agents can also monitor sources over time and alert a user when information changes.

That distinction matters. A chatbot may explain how to find a hotel; a browsing agent may search for options, compare them against your requirements, and attempt to book one. The agent is no longer only producing text. It may be operating websites on your behalf, which makes oversight, account access, and error handling part of the browsing experience.

Answer questions across pages and tabs
Google’s September 18, 2025 announcement about Gemini in Chrome described assistance that could understand context across multiple tabs, answer questions, and integrate with Google services. That announcement also described more advanced multi-step agentic capabilities as being developed, with grocery ordering as an example. It should not be read as proof that every capability in the announcement was generally available at the time, or is available to every user now.

Carry out multi-step tasks
Google’s Gemini in Chrome Help documentation describes auto browse for desktop Chrome. A user describes a task, reviews the agent’s proposed plan, and starts it. The agent may ask for confirmation, ask the user to take over, or stop. Its documented examples include finding and booking accommodation, making dining reservations, arranging delivery, looking for event tickets, comparing products, handling communications, organizing a calendar, researching job markets, and retrieving receipts.
Google calls the feature experimental. That status is important: functionality and access can change, and a documented example is not a guarantee that the agent can complete the same task on every website or in every account.
Monitor information and assist with bookings
In a May 19, 2026 Search announcement, Google described information agents that can monitor web sources and current data, synthesize changes, and let users take action. The same announcement described agentic booking flows for local experiences and services that combine current pricing and availability with links to providers. These are Google-announced capabilities, not evidence that such agents are universally available or adopted across search services and markets.

What still needs a person in control
Delegation does not mean handing over judgment. Google’s auto browse documentation says the user can review a plan and take over or stop a task. It also says confirmation may be requested before sending communications, changing data, submitting forms, scheduling events, or accessing highly sensitive financial or health sites. For steps such as financial transactions, accepting terms, and creating accounts, a user may need to take over.
Those checkpoints are useful safeguards, not a promise that an agent will always pause at the right moment or understand the consequences of an action. Google warns that auto browse may misunderstand a request or a website, click incorrectly, make an unintended purchase, add the wrong quantity, or report completion when the task is unfinished. Google says users remain responsible for the agent’s actions.
A practical way to delegate a task
- Keep the request bounded. State the goal and constraints, such as dates, budget, location, or quantity. Avoid asking an agent to make an open-ended decision when you have not specified what matters.
- Read the plan before starting. Check which sites and actions it proposes, what information it will use, and whether it has understood the request correctly.
- Stay available during consequential steps. Review the actual item, recipient, dates, amounts, and form fields before approving a purchase, message, booking, or data change.
- Take over or stop when the task changes. A page may present unexpected terms, request sensitive information, or lead somewhere outside the original task. Do not treat the agent’s momentum as a reason to continue.
- Verify the result on the site. Check the confirmation, saved change, or submission itself. A completion message is not proof that the intended action succeeded.
Security risks: prompt injection and misleading requests
Prompt injection is an attempt to influence an AI agent through instructions embedded in a site, document, email, or media. The instructions may be hidden from the user or simply easy to overlook. Google gives examples of malicious content trying to make an agent transmit private information or send email without the user’s intent. Because an agent reads and acts on web content, a page can be more than information to summarize: it can also be an attempted source of instructions.

Google describes several safeguards for Chrome agents: limiting activity to sites and actions relevant to the task, a User Alignment Critic that reviews proposed actions, Agent Origin Sets that constrain which origins the agent may read or act on, prompt-injection checks, and user confirmation for sensitive actions such as payments, purchases, posting, and credential use. Google also describes automated red-teaming. These are provider-described mitigations; they do not establish that every attack will be detected or prevented.

OpenAI notes that an attack may try to get an agent to request a URL containing sensitive information, and says websites commonly log requested URLs in analytics and server logs. OpenAI says it uses safeguards to reduce this risk. The practical implication is to consider not only what an agent reads on a page, but also whether information could be included in a request it makes.
Privacy depends on the product and account context
A browser agent may be able to reach the same signed-in sites as the user. Google says auto browse may use personal information to complete a task and may share information with websites; it advises users to review the plan and data-sharing settings. With permission, Gemini may use saved sign-in information through Google Password Manager. Google says Password Manager does not share passwords with Gemini or with the sites.

OpenAI’s ChatGPT agent documentation describes different, product-specific handling. It says a limited number of authorized personnel and service providers may access content for specified purposes, subject to access controls and logging. Business, Enterprise, and Edu data is not used for model training by default. For Plus and Pro, handling follows the privacy policy and stated controls, including opt-in improvement settings. Agent chats, browsing history, and screenshots are retained until deleted; after deletion, they are removed from systems within 90 days.
These statements apply to the named providers and products, not to AI browsers as a category. Before using an agent on a personal account, check what it can access, what it may share with websites, how long its activity is retained, how deletion works, and whether your plan’s data may be used for model improvement.
Why websites are changing too
Agents do not operate in a vacuum. Their usefulness depends partly on whether websites make their content and actions understandable to automated systems. A Chrome developers’ update dated May 19, 2026 named WebMCP and Modern Web Guidance as work intended to help agents interact with websites, alongside browser-assistant and performance work. This signals attention to agent-friendly web design; it does not establish that these initiatives will become universal standards.

That creates a two-sided change. Browsers and search systems are developing ways to interpret and act on web information, while website designers are considering how to expose information and actions to agents. How far this goes will depend on adoption, reliability, user consent, and the choices made by individual sites and platforms.
How to judge an AI browsing service
There is no supported, comparable benchmark here for which consumer agent completes real-world tasks best. Provider feature descriptions and policies establish what those providers say their systems can do; they do not show that one service is more accurate or safer in independent testing. Compare services against the task you actually want to delegate.
- Task support: Does it answer questions about a page, research across tabs, submit forms, book services, shop, or monitor information over time?
- Human control: Can you inspect a plan, approve sensitive steps, take over, pause, and stop?
- Account context: Does it work in your local browser, use signed-in sites, connect to other apps, or operate through a remote browser?
- Privacy: What content can it access or share? How long are chats, browsing activity, or screenshots retained? What deletion and model-training controls apply to your account type?
- Security: What limits apply to sites and actions? How does the provider describe its handling of prompt injection, credentials, purchases, and other sensitive actions?
- Availability: Confirm supported devices, regions, languages, account types, rollout status, and any plan requirements in the provider’s current documentation.
- Limits and cost: Check current prices and task limits directly before relying on a service; these details vary and may change.
Will agentic AI replace web browsing?
The evidence points to a change in how some browsing tasks are done, not a settled replacement for browsing itself. An agent can reduce the work of comparing pages, gathering updates, or completing routine steps, but it can misunderstand a site, act incorrectly, or encounter a decision that needs human judgment. People still need ways to inspect evidence, set boundaries, and verify consequential outcomes.
Product status is also volatile. For example, OpenAI’s Help Center said Atlas was being discontinued and recommended moving to a supported browser before August 9, 2026; that date has passed, so Atlas should not be assumed to remain supported without checking its live status. More broadly, no universal adoption timeline or independent performance comparison is established by the available provider announcements and documentation. The future is likely to be a mix of direct browsing, page assistants, task-running agents, and monitoring tools, with the balance varying by task and service.
