Yes, you can often trade stocks after 4:00 p.m. Eastern Time—but only through a broker that offers extended-hours trading, and only in securities and sessions it supports. Regular U.S. exchange trading runs from 9:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. ET. After-hours orders are matched electronically in separate pre-market or post-market sessions, where fewer participants, wider spreads, fragmented quotes and fast reactions to news can make execution materially different from trading during the day.
What “after-hours trading” means
The U.S. stock market does not become completely inactive when the regular session ends. At 4:00 p.m. ET, the primary exchange session closes, but electronic trading systems may continue matching orders. The Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) describes this activity as “after-hours trading,” also called extended-hours trading: trading that occurs outside regular trading hours.

In practice, your broker presents an extended-hours ticket that controls several decisions at once: whether the ticker is eligible, whether you are entering a pre-market or post-market session, which order types and time-in-force instructions are available, and where the order is routed. A regular-session order is not automatically carried into the evening. You must select the appropriate session and duration.

When the sessions run
The SEC’s Investor.gov materials identify 9:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. ET as regular trading hours for stocks traded on exchanges and certain other markets. Extended-hours schedules are not uniform. A broker may offer a pre-market window before 9:30 a.m., a post-market window after 4:00 p.m., or both. Some venues and brokers are also developing or discussing overnight sessions.
| Session | Typical timing | What determines access | Important qualification |
|---|---|---|---|
| Regular session | 9:30 a.m.–4:00 p.m. ET | Exchange and market rules | The standard session referenced by the SEC; holidays and special closures can change the calendar. |
| Pre-market | Before 9:30 a.m. ET | Your broker’s schedule and the venue’s rules | Start and end times vary; not every security is eligible. |
| Post-market (after-hours) | After 4:00 p.m. ET | Your broker’s schedule and the venue’s rules | End times vary; an order can remain unfilled when the session closes. |
| Night or overnight session | Outside the above windows | Only where a broker and venue specifically provide it | Availability, eligible symbols, protections and schedules are changeable; verify them on the day you trade. |
NYSE has reported SEC approval activity concerning expanded equity hours, while Nasdaq rule materials describe pre-market, post-market and night-session concepts. Those developments do not create one universal schedule. Check the current hours shown in your broker’s order ticket and the venue rules before relying on an advertised window.
How an after-hours order reaches a trade
- You choose a session in the broker’s ticket. The ticket may use labels such as “extended hours,” “pre-market,” “after-hours” or a separate session selector. Read the disclosure attached to that screen.
- The broker checks eligibility. The symbol, account type, order size and requested session may all affect whether the order is accepted. A stock that trades during the day may be unavailable after the close.
- You select an allowed order type and duration. Extended-hours systems commonly limit the choices available in regular trading. A regular day order generally expires at the end of the regular session unless you explicitly choose an extended-hours duration.
- The broker routes the order. Depending on its arrangement, the firm may send it to one electronic venue or to multiple systems. Ask whether it seeks the best displayed price across the venues it uses; the SEC specifically advises investors to understand this handling.
- An electronic matching engine looks for a counterparty. If a compatible bid and offer meet, the system executes the quantity that can be matched. If only part of your order can be matched, you receive a partial fill and the remainder follows the selected time-in-force rules.
- The order expires, is cancelled or carries only as instructed. When the selected session ends, an order that has not filled may expire. It does not automatically become a regular-session order unless the ticket explicitly says that it will.
The electronic process is real trading, but it is not the same pool of liquidity used from 9:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. That distinction explains most of the practical differences.

Regular hours versus after hours
| Factor | Regular session | Extended session |
|---|---|---|
| Participants | Broader participation from investors and market makers. | Fewer participants and, often, fewer market makers. |
| Liquidity | Usually deeper, making larger orders easier to execute. | Thinner; an order may move the displayed price or fill only partly. |
| Bid-ask spread | Often tighter because more competing quotes are present. | Can be wider, raising the cost of an immediate purchase or sale. |
| Quotes | More comprehensive displayed prices within the regular market structure. | Quotes can differ between simultaneously operating systems; one screen may not show every available interest. |
| Order choices | Broader set of order types and durations, subject to broker rules. | Broker or venue may permit only selected order types and time-in-force choices. |
| Execution certainty | Higher probability of a prompt, complete fill, but never guaranteed. | Greater chance of no fill, partial fill or a less favorable price. |
| Information environment | Prices reflect news and orders arriving during the session. | Companies frequently release price-sensitive news after the close, so prices can jump before the next regular open. |
Why a stock can move after the closing bell
Company announcements
Many companies schedule earnings releases, forecasts, regulatory disclosures or other material announcements after 4:00 p.m. Traders react in the post-market session, so the displayed price can move sharply while the regular exchange is closed. The move may continue, reverse or widen when more participants return the next morning.
Thin order books
With fewer buyers and sellers, a relatively small order can consume the best displayed quote and expose the next, less favorable price. This is why a stock may show a large change even when the number of shares traded is modest. Do not infer a broad market consensus from one isolated quote or a single small execution.
Different venues showing different prices
Extended-hours trading is fragmented. Two electronic systems operating at the same time may display different bids and offers because they have different participants and order books. A quote on your screen may therefore be better or worse than a quote available elsewhere, depending on what your broker can access and how it routes orders.

Overnight information and risk repricing
News from suppliers, regulators, courts, competitors or overseas markets can arrive after the post-market session ends. The next regular-session opening price may be materially different from the last after-hours quote. An after-hours price is not a promise about the next opening auction.

Choosing an order type and time in force
Why a limit order is commonly considered
A limit order specifies the highest price you will pay to buy or the lowest price you will accept to sell. In an illiquid session, that ceiling or floor can prevent an unexpected execution far from the quote you saw. The protection has a trade-off: if the market never reaches your limit, the order remains unfilled.
Why market-order behavior needs special care
A market order prioritizes execution over price. When the spread is wide or the order book is thin, the eventual execution can be substantially different from the last traded price shown on a chart. Some brokers do not permit market orders in extended hours; others apply special limitations. Use only the choices the ticket clearly permits and understand the firm’s disclosure.

Time in force is a separate decision
Selecting “after-hours” does not by itself tell the system how long to keep an unfilled order. The ticket may offer a session-only duration, a day instruction that covers a particular session, or another broker-defined choice. Read the exact expiration language. If you intend to try again in the regular session, submit a new order unless the broker explicitly confirms carryover.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Step-by-step: placing a post-market trade
- Confirm the clock and calendar. Convert the displayed time to Eastern Time and check whether the market is observing a holiday, early close or special schedule.
- Check the symbol. Open the quote or order ticket and verify that the stock is marked eligible for the post-market session. If the extended-hours selector is missing or disabled, do not assume the order will be accepted.
- Read the disclosure. Identify the venues the broker uses, whether it searches multiple displayed prices, which order types are allowed, and how cancellations, partial fills and expirations work.
- Inspect the live market. Look at the displayed bid, ask, spread and recent volume. Treat a stale quote or a single isolated print as weak information.
- Set a controlled price when appropriate. Enter a limit price that matches your risk tolerance, recognizing that price control can result in no execution.
- Select the exact session and duration. Confirm that the ticket says post-market or after-hours and shows the intended time in force. Do not rely on a default inherited from a regular-session order.
- Review the final preview. Check symbol, buy or sell direction, share quantity, limit price, session, duration and any warning about extended-hours risks.
- Monitor the result. After submission, verify whether the order is working, partially filled, cancelled or expired. A working order is not the same as a guaranteed fill.
- Recheck at the next regular open. Review the position and the opening market because overnight news and broader participation can produce a very different price.
Common mistakes and how to avoid them
- Assuming every stock trades after 4:00 p.m. Eligibility is broker- and venue-dependent. Check the ticket for the specific symbol.
- Assuming the closing price is still available. The 4:00 p.m. regular-session close is a reference point, not a guaranteed after-hours execution price.
- Using a regular day order by mistake. Many day orders expire with the regular session. Set the extended-hours session and duration explicitly.
- Reading one venue’s quote as the whole market. Fragmented systems may show different prices. Understand what your broker can access and how it routes.
- Chasing a headline. A fast move on thin liquidity can reverse when fuller participation returns. Decide your maximum acceptable price before submitting.
- Ignoring partial fills. You may own fewer shares than requested while the unfilled balance remains active or expires. Check the order status rather than assuming completion.
- Expecting the next open to match the after-hours quote. New information can arrive overnight, and the opening auction can establish a different price.
What happens if your order does not fill?
An unfilled order can remain displayed until the selected session ends, expire according to its time-in-force instruction or be cancelled by you or the broker under the applicable rules. A partial fill leaves the remainder subject to those same conditions. If obtaining the shares is important, decide in advance whether you will cancel, revise the limit, or submit a new regular-session order; each choice changes your price and execution risk.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsDo not repeatedly replace an order simply because the quote moves. In a fragmented market, the displayed price may change when one small order appears or disappears. Re-read the spread, available size and your limit before making a new decision.

How to decide whether after-hours trading fits your situation
It may be useful when timing matters
Extended hours can let you respond to a material announcement before the next regular session or manage an existing position when you cannot wait until 9:30 a.m. ET. The benefit is access to an earlier trading opportunity, not a guarantee of a better price.
Waiting may be preferable when execution quality matters
If your order is large, the spread is wide, the quote is thin or the news is still developing, waiting for regular hours can provide broader participation and a better chance of a complete fill. You still face market risk while waiting, so this is a trade-off rather than a universal rule.
Use a pre-trade checklist
- Is the symbol eligible in the exact session you selected?
- Do you understand which venue or venues will receive the order?
- Is the displayed spread acceptable for the size you want to trade?
- Have you chosen a limit price and time in force deliberately?
- Can you tolerate a partial fill, no fill or a price that differs from the last trade?
- Have you considered news that could arrive before the next regular open?
Are extended trading hours changing?
Exchange rule filings and approvals indicate continuing interest in expanding equity trading hours. Nasdaq materials discuss pre-market, post-market and night-session concepts, and NYSE has reported SEC approval activity related to expanded hours. Schedules, eligible securities, order protections and routing arrangements can change as these proposals develop. Treat any calendar or feature shown by a broker as the operative rule for your account on the day you trade, and verify it again when the broker updates its terms.
The practical answer to “Can I buy a stock at 4:30 p.m.?”
You can if your broker offers a post-market session, the security is eligible, and the order meets the venue’s restrictions. Select the post-market session, review the live bid and ask, choose an allowed order type—often a limit order when price control is important—and set the time in force explicitly. Expect less liquidity, wider spreads, fragmented quotes and a greater chance of a partial or missing fill than during regular hours. Then reassess the position when regular trading resumes, because overnight information can change the market.
