On an eligible YouTube channel, a 24/7 livestream can earn money in three different ways: ads shown around or during the stream, one-time Super Chats and Super Stickers in live chat, and recurring channel memberships. Each feature has separate eligibility and setup requirements, and enabling monetization does not guarantee that ads will be served or that viewers will pay. A separate operational issue matters for nonstop broadcasts: a stream longer than 12 hours may not be saved as a YouTube archive.
How the three revenue features differ
| Feature | What the viewer pays for | How it works on a live stream |
|---|---|---|
| Ads | An advertising impression, when one is served | Ads may run before the stream and during it. YouTube decides whether an eligible ad slot serves an ad. |
| Super Chat and Super Stickers | A one-time paid interaction | Viewers pay to highlight a message or surface an animated sticker in live chat. |
| Channel memberships | Recurring monthly support | Members pay monthly for creator-defined perks, which can include badges and emoji. |
These are distinct mechanisms: ad revenue is not a viewer contribution, a Super Chat or Sticker is not a recurring subscription, and a membership is not a one-time live-chat purchase. Eligibility for one does not automatically qualify a channel for the others.

How ads work during a continuous livestream
Pre-roll and mid-roll controls
When a channel is monetized and monetization is enabled for a livestream, YouTube says pre-roll and display ads are turned on automatically. Mid-roll ads can be managed in three ways:
- Automatic: YouTube looks for natural breakpoints. The creator can choose low, medium, or high frequency. YouTube also describes controls intended to limit disruption for channel members, temporarily pause mid-rolls for viewers who send gifts, Super Chats, or Stickers, and snooze mid-rolls during high engagement. Automatic mid-rolls can be delayed for ten minutes through Live Control Room.
- Scheduled: Set breaks at 6, 12, 18, 24, or 30 minute intervals. An interval is a scheduling control, not a promise that every break will result in an ad.
- Manual: Insert breaks from Live Control Room when you choose. If you use manual mode but insert no mid-roll breaks, no mid-rolls are served.
YouTube states: “Ad slots are not guaranteed to serve ads.” Its ad systems decide which slots receive ads; viewers who do not receive an ad continue watching the stream, while viewers who do receive one return after the ad ends or they skip it. As a result, neither a chosen interval nor an enabled slot guarantees an impression or a fixed amount of revenue.

What YouTube has reported about automatic mid-rolls
In January 2024, YouTube reported that creators who selected live automatic mid-roll ads saw an average uplift of over 20% in in-stream ad revenue per hour compared with channels that did not, averaged across 207 countries. This is YouTube’s reported group comparison, not a forecast for an individual channel and not evidence that a 24/7 stream will achieve the same result.
Horizontal versus vertical streams
YouTube’s live-feature table lists pre-roll and mid-roll ads for horizontal livestreams, but not for the vertical live feed. The same table lists memberships and gifted memberships for both orientations. If your broadcast is designed for a mobile-first vertical feed, do not assume its ad options match a horizontal stream.
Do Super Chats and Super Stickers work on a 24-hour stream?
They can be available during a 24/7 broadcast if the channel and the particular stream meet YouTube’s requirements. A Super Chat is a paid, highlighted live-chat message; a Super Sticker is a paid animated image surfaced in live chat. These features depend on fan-funding eligibility, acceptance of the relevant commerce terms, location and channel criteria, and live chat being available. They are not general donation buttons for every viewing context.

YouTube excludes Super Chats and Super Stickers on age-restricted, unlisted, private, made-for-kids, and YouTube Giving fundraiser videos. They are also unavailable if live chat or comments are turned off.
How channel memberships work during a livestream
A membership is a recurring monthly payment for channel perks, such as badges, emoji, or other perks set by the creator. Viewers may join while watching a live stream when memberships are enabled and the channel and content qualify. Memberships are separate from Super Chats and Stickers, which are individual paid live interactions.
A channel marked made for kids cannot offer memberships. YouTube also applies channel-audience and eligible-content criteria beyond the broad fan-funding requirements, so meeting an entry threshold alone does not establish that memberships are available.

Eligibility: thresholds are only one part of the check
YouTube’s monetization table lists these channel thresholds for the features named below. They are not the complete eligibility test; location, account standing, content, the applicable contract module, and individual feature rules also matter.

| Feature group | Subscriber and activity threshold listed by YouTube |
|---|---|
| Certain fan-funding features | 500 subscribers, three public uploads in the last 90 days, and either 3,000 qualified public watch hours on long-form videos in the last 365 days or 3 million qualified Shorts views in the last 90 days. |
| Watch Page ads | 1,000 subscribers and either 4,000 qualified public watch hours on long-form videos in the last 365 days or 10 million qualified Shorts views in the last 90 days. |
Broadly, fan-funding features require joining the YouTube Partner Program, being at least 18, living in a country or region where the feature is available, accepting and complying with the applicable Commerce Product Module or legacy addendum, and turning on the feature. Check the current Earn tab and YouTube’s current feature requirements before planning around a threshold, since platform requirements and availability can change.

A made-for-kids designation has significant monetization consequences: memberships and Super Chat/Super Stickers are disabled, and personalized ads are disabled. Other stream-level restrictions can also affect feature availability. Set the audience designation accurately; do not treat a change to the setting as a workaround for eligibility rules.

Will YouTube save a 24-hour livestream?
Not reliably as a single replay. YouTube says it can automatically archive a livestream that is less than 12 hours; a stream exceeding 12 hours may not be captured at all. If preserving a replay matters, make a local recording backup and verify that your chosen broadcast workflow can record continuously. The archive limit concerns replay capture: it does not establish that a stream over 12 hours automatically loses monetization or has to be stopped at 12 hours.
Keeping a YouTube stream running without a home computer
If you want a pre-recorded video or playlist to remain live on YouTube without leaving a computer running, StreamNeo is one cloud option. It plays uploaded videos, not a camera feed, and streams to YouTube. Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live; the cloud handles looping, so your computer and home connection do not have to stay on. StreamNeo lists one flat price per slot for any uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps, with no re-encode or quality tiers, and automatic recovery if YouTube drops the stream. Each slot includes 10 GB storage, pooled across active slots, plus 24/7 looping and playlists and StreamNeo team support. The first day is free with no card; one free day is available per account. The same product is on every plan; only the billing length changes.

Quick Recap
Practical checks before relying on livestream income
- Confirm each desired feature appears as available in YouTube Studio; do not infer eligibility for ads, fan funding, and memberships from one another.
- Choose an ad mode based on how much control you want over interruptions. Automatic mode offers breakpoint selection and protective controls; scheduled mode uses a selected interval; manual mode gives direct insertion control but serves no mid-rolls unless you insert them.
- Keep expectations for ad delivery separate from ad settings: YouTube does not guarantee that an eligible slot serves an ad.
- If the stream is vertical, verify the implications for ads rather than assuming horizontal-stream capabilities carry over.
- If a 24/7 replay must exist, arrange a local recording; a single YouTube archive is not assured for a stream exceeding 12 hours.
- Review YouTube’s current rules for audience designation, eligible content, geography, and commerce terms before enabling a feature.
