Adaptive noise cancellation (ANC) uses microphones and processing to reduce some outside sound, while transparency mode captures and plays outside sound through the headphones. An adaptive feature adjusts cancellation, ambient sound, or their balance as conditions change. Neither feature guarantees silence or works independently of the headphones’ physical fit.
How does active noise cancellation work?
Microphones pick up sound around or inside the headphones. Their electronics process that signal and drive the speakers to produce an opposing signal, called anti-noise. At the ear, the original sound and anti-noise combine, reducing some of the sound the wearer hears. ANC is an electronic layer, not a physical vacuum or a promise of silence.

Implementations differ. For example, Bang & Olufsen says the Beocom Portal uses an outward-facing microphone for feed-forward ANC to measure incoming sound and suppress mid-to-upper frequencies. Internal microphones provide feedback ANC: they sense sound from the speaker as well as lower-to-mid-frequency ambient noise, and the system generates anti-noise in response. B&O says the model’s adaptive feature analyzes the surroundings and selects a suitable cancellation algorithm as background noise changes. This is a description of that product, not a universal account of how every headphone works. Bang & Olufsen’s Beocom Portal explanation
What is the difference between ANC and transparency mode?
ANC reduces some outside sound
ANC processes microphone input to reduce sound reaching the listener. It works alongside passive isolation: ear cups, cushions, and ear tips physically block some sound before the electronics handle the rest. B&O says the Beocom Portal’s memory-foam and leather ear pads help block high-frequency sound. B&O’s product explanation

Transparency plays outside sound through the headphones
Transparency mode captures ambient sound with microphones and reproduces it through the headphone speakers, so the wearer can hear more of the environment without removing the headphones. The microphone arrangement and processing vary by model; there is no single circuit design that applies to every transparency mode. Apple describes its AirPods Transparency mode as letting outside sound in. Apple’s guide to AirPods ANC and Transparency modes
What does “adaptive” mean?
“Adaptive” is a feature label, not one standardized design. Apple says Adaptive Audio for supported AirPods blends ANC and Transparency according to changing noise conditions, and lets users adjust how much ambient sound is allowed. B&O describes adaptive ANC selecting a cancellation algorithm as surroundings change. Sony’s May 2025 announcement describes the WH-1000XM6’s Auto Ambient Sound as adapting in real time to balance music and outside sound, alongside an Adaptive NC Optimiser that adjusts noise cancellation. - Block the World, Keep the Music: Four built-in mics work together to filter out background noise — whether you're in a packed office, on a crowded commute, or moving through a busy street — so every beat comes through clean and clear. (Not available in AUX-in mode.)
- Two Ways to Hear More: BassUp technology delivers deep, punchy bass and crisp highs in wireless mode — then step it up further by plugging in the included AUX cable to unlock Hi‑Res certified audio for studio-level clarity.
- 40 Hours. 5-Minute Top-Up: With ANC on, a single charge keeps you listening through days of commutes and long-haul flights. Running low? Just 5 minutes plugged in gives you 4 more hours — so you're never stuck waiting.
- Two Devices, Zero Hassle: Stay connected to your laptop and phone at the same time. Audio switches automatically to whichever device needs you — so a call never interrupts your flow, and getting back to your playlist is just as easy. Designed for commuters and remote workers who move smoothly between work and personal listening throughout the day.
- Your Sound, Your Rules: The soundcore app puts everything at your fingertips — dials your ideal EQ with presets or build your own, flip between ANC, Normal, and Transparency modes on the fly, or wind down with built-in white noise. One app, total control.
These examples use adaptation for different behaviors. Check what the specific model changes—cancellation strength, ambient sound, or the mix—rather than assuming two products with “adaptive” in their names behave alike.

Physical fit affects passive isolation and the sound reaching the ear, so a poor seal can weaken the overall listening experience. What can interfere with ANC or transparency?
- A loose or unsuitable seal: Check the fit guidance for the exact model; Apple provides fit or acoustic-seal checks for some AirPods.
- Blocked microphones: Apple warns that covered or obstructed external microphones can cause squeals, chirps, feedback, or other performance problems. Keep microphone openings clear and consult the model’s troubleshooting steps if the sound persists. Apple’s ANC troubleshooting guide
- Model and software differences: Available modes and controls can depend on the headphone model and connected-device software. Apple lists supported AirPods models and software-dependent features in its documentation. Apple’s Adaptive Audio guide
How should you compare headphones with these modes?
Compare the practical details that affect everyday use rather than relying on the word “adaptive” or a microphone count alone:
- Over-ear versus in-ear design, and whether the fit feels secure.
- Available ANC modes and adjustable cancellation levels.
- Transparency or ambient-sound controls and what they change.
- The exact behavior described as adaptive for that model.
- Compatibility requirements and whether the manufacturer offers a fit test.
Sony stated that the WH-1000XM6 has 12 microphones, 1.5 times the number in the WH-1000XM5. Those are Sony’s model specifications, not an independent measure of noise-cancellation performance. The cited manufacturer information does not provide controlled cross-brand figures for cancellation effectiveness, so microphone counts and feature labels alone cannot establish which headphones cancel more noise.
