There is now an official LEGO PlayStation set: LEGO model 72306, based on the original console and controller. The key difference is status and certainty: the official set has published specifications and licensed game details, while a PlayStation-inspired fan build is an individual design whose features, parts, and availability must be checked with its creator.
What is the official LEGO PlayStation set?
LEGO announced set 72306 on September 3, 2026, calling it the first-ever LEGO PlayStation set. LEGO announced general availability for October 4, following LEGO Insiders early access on October 1. Its announced suggested retail prices were $179.99 in the United States, £139.99 in the United Kingdom, and €159.99 in the euro area. Those are announcement prices, not a guarantee of current stock or what a seller charges; check the LEGO product listing for current availability and regional pricing.

The adult display model is based on the original PlayStation console and its first controller, recreated at near 1:1 scale. It contains 1,911 pieces, is rated for ages 18+, and measures about 26 cm (10.5 inches) wide. The console has functional Open and Power buttons, and the controller plugs into it. Hidden inside are removable buildable scenes referencing Gran Turismo and Ape Escape, originally released in 1997 and 1999, respectively. LEGO and PlayStation describe the design and details in their announcement and PlayStation post.
Official set vs. fan-inspired build
“PlayStation-inspired” describes a subject or design influence, not an official relationship. A fan-made MOC (short for “my own creation”) may be a finished model, a digital design, instructions, or a parts package. Check the individual creator’s page to establish what is actually offered; do not assume it is licensed, sold by LEGO, or approved by Sony.

Which option suits you?
Choose the official set for a defined collector’s build
Set 72306 is the straightforward choice if you want a LEGO-released PlayStation model with a fixed piece count, published dimensions, a controller, interactive buttons, and two game-themed scenes. Its 18+ guidance and display-focused design make it an adult-oriented gift or collection piece.
Choose a fan build for a particular custom design
A fan project may be the better fit when you have found a specific interpretation that matches your preferred console version, scale, or display idea. Compare the actual instructions and parts offer before committing. There is no reliable category-wide claim that fan builds are cheaper, easier to assemble, more accurate, or more customizable than the official set.

How LEGO Ideas relates to fan builds
LEGO Ideas is a defined submission and review program, not a label for every fan creation. LEGO says an idea that reaches 10,000 supporters, or is selected through a challenge, may be considered for production as an official set; support alone does not guarantee selection. LEGO customer support says review can take several months. See LEGO Ideas and its customer-support explanation.
One PlayStation-store extra to check
PlayStation’s product page says a 276-piece LEGO Astro Bot build is included at no extra cost with purchases made directly through PlayStation, while stocks last. This is a seller-specific offer, not an advertised bonus for every retailer; check the PlayStation Direct product page for its current terms and availability.
