A Wi-Fi 7 network interface card (NIC) carries data between your computer’s network stack and a wireless link. On the way out, the operating system and driver prepare traffic for the device; MAC functions organize frames and access to the channel; the PHY encodes the transmission; and the radio and antenna send it. Incoming traffic follows the reverse route. This is a conceptual pipeline, not a universal blueprint: vendors divide tasks differently among software, firmware, and hardware.
First, what Wi-Fi 7 specifies—and what it does not
Wi-Fi 7 is based on IEEE 802.11be-2024, which defines enhancements to the wireless standard’s Media Access Control (MAC) and physical (PHY) layers. The standard describes protocol behavior and capabilities; it does not prescribe the internal block diagram of every NIC.

IEEE Standards Association describes a mode capable of a maximum throughput of at least 30 Gbit/s, measured at the MAC data service access point (SAP), for carrier frequencies between 1 and 7.250 GHz. That is a standards capability threshold at a specified measurement point—not a promise of a 30 Gbit/s application download. Application throughput is a different measurement, and depends on the devices and conditions involved.

How an outgoing packet reaches the air
Follow one piece of data as it leaves a computer for a wireless access point. The exact handoffs vary by operating system, driver model, and NIC, but the stages below show the usual roles without implying that every device executes them in precisely this order.
1. The host network stack prepares traffic
An application gives data to the operating system’s networking stack. The stack handles the host-side networking needed to send it toward its destination, and the wireless interface becomes the path out when that network is selected. The NIC does not simply transmit an application’s original data as-is: it participates in carrying traffic through the network and link layers.
2. The driver hands work to the wireless device
The wireless driver connects the operating system’s networking and wireless functions to the NIC. It arranges for traffic to be sent and communicates with the device; firmware and hardware may handle some of the subsequent work. The host connection is a separate boundary from the over-the-air Wi-Fi link.

- Wi-Fi 7 Module, Bluetooth 5.3 Compatible
- Supports high-speed wireless connections of up to 5800Mbps
- Offers up to 320MHz bandwidth support across the 2.4GHz, 5GHz, and 6GHz bands
- 4K-QAM allows for higher transmission rates, resulting in increased efficiency
- MLO (Multi-Link Operation) enables simultaneous connections on two bands
For example, a documented Wi-Fi 7 M.2 module, the WMX8202, has PCIe interface signals. That is evidence for that module design, not a claim that every Wi-Fi adapter uses PCIe or fits every M.2 slot. Module keying and physical fit, motherboard support, antenna connections, operating-system and driver support, and local regulatory constraints all matter when assessing compatibility.
3. MAC functions organize frames and channel access
The MAC layer handles link-level organization. It frames traffic for the wireless connection and manages access to the shared radio medium, along with functions such as acknowledgments and retries. Linux’s mac80211 documentation describes a useful SoftMAC example: frames passed between mac80211 and a driver generally start with the IEEE 802.11 header and include the octets sent over the air, except for the FCS, which the hardware should calculate.
That description has exceptions. Linux documents that encryption or decryption can be offloaded to hardware, and fragmentation can also be handled in hardware. Other implementations may divide these responsibilities differently between host software, firmware, and MAC hardware.

4. PHY processing makes a radio transmission
The PHY takes the transmission organized by the MAC and encodes it for the radio link. In broad terms, it turns digital information into a form that can be sent as a radio waveform. On reception, PHY processing works in reverse to recover digital data from the received signal. The PHY’s role is distinct from the MAC’s frame organization and channel-access role, even though both contribute to the wireless link.

The radio circuitry and antenna system transmit the waveform over the air. From there, the signal travels through a channel to the access point, where its own radio and protocol processing receive it. Antenna arrangement and radio configuration are implementation details: the term “Wi-Fi 7 NIC” alone does not tell you a device’s exact radio-chain design.
How incoming Wi-Fi data returns to the host
On reception, the access point’s radio transmission reaches the client’s antenna and radio. The client PHY processes the signal into digital information; MAC functions interpret the link-layer frames and handle delivery-related work; then the driver and operating system can pass network traffic up to the host stack and its destination.

Hardware or firmware may filter frames, decrypt them, reorder them, or process aggregated traffic before the driver and host networking layers receive it. The exact division depends on the NIC and driver. It is therefore more accurate to think of a coordinated path than to assume every received frame must pass through one fixed series of software steps.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Where Multi-Link Operation fits
Multi-Link Operation (MLO) belongs to MAC and link coordination: it concerns how a capable station and access point coordinate links. It does not mean that every Wi-Fi 7 NIC always transmits or receives on all bands simultaneously. Whether MLO is available, and how it behaves, depends on both ends’ capabilities and the operating mode.
Linux wireless documentation includes MLO-aware controls, and a Wi-Fi 7 technical reference from Pearson covers MLO and multi-link-device data-plane concepts. Neither fact makes simultaneous use of every band a universal property of Wi-Fi 7 equipment.

What changes from one Wi-Fi 7 NIC to another?
- Driver and MAC model: In a SoftMAC design, the host wireless stack may take a more direct role in MAC work; other implementations offload more to firmware or hardware.
- Encryption and fragmentation: These may be handled in software or offloaded to the device. Linux mac80211 explicitly documents hardware-offload exceptions.
- Queues and host communication: Queueing, notifications, and transfer mechanics depend on the interface, driver, and device. There is not one documented DMA or descriptor-ring sequence that can be assumed for all Wi-Fi 7 NICs.
- Radio and antennas: The number and arrangement of radio chains and antennas are product-specific, as are supported bands and channel configurations.
- MLO implementation: Device and access-point capabilities, plus the chosen operating mode, determine which links are coordinated and how.
- Host interface and physical fit: A bus or module format must be supported by the host; a shared label such as M.2 does not, by itself, establish compatibility.
Queue examples from other networking contexts should not be mistaken for a universal Wi-Fi receive design. For instance, Microsoft’s Virtual Machine Multiple Queues (VMMQ) documentation describes RSS-based processor distribution in its virtualized NIC context; it does not define the over-the-air receive path of every Wi-Fi 7 adapter.
How to interpret a Wi-Fi 7 speed figure
Check the measurement point before comparing numbers. IEEE’s at-least-30-Gbit/s figure is a maximum capability measured at the MAC data service access point, not an application-level result. A PHY rate, MAC-level figure, and application throughput describe different points in the path. For a meaningful comparison, also account for channel conditions and the capabilities of both the client and access point; do not treat a standards maximum as an expected everyday transfer rate.
