A research-stage sensor can measure magnetic-field components along the x, y and z axes. It does not sense motion directly: motion can be inferred when a magnet or other suitable target changes position relative to the sensor. The key addition is a nanoparticle guide that redirects the hard-to-detect out-of-plane field into directions the sensor can read.
What the three-axis sensor actually measures
The device is a three-axis planar Hall magnetoresistance (PHMR) sensor developed by researchers affiliated with the Korea Institute of Machinery and Materials, GyeongKuk National University and DGIST. Their paper, “Development of a Three-Axis Planar Hall Magnetoresistance Sensor Using a Superparamagnetic Nanoparticle-Based Flux Guide,” was first published in Advanced Functional Materials on 13 June 2026. The paper abstract describes measurements of magnetic-field components along x, y and z.

That distinction matters: the sensor is not an accelerometer or a conventional inertial measurement unit. To use it for motion tracking, a system needs a suitable magnetic target, a setup in which relative motion changes the field, and processing that interprets the measured changes as position or movement.

A planar PHMR sensor ordinarily responds to magnetic-field components in its plane. The researchers added a superparamagnetic nanoparticle flux guide (SPMFG) to redirect an out-of-plane z-axis field into in-plane components that the sensor array can detect.

The guide consists of magnetite (Fe₃O₄) nanoparticles in an SU-8 matrix, printed onto the sensor array. During field-assisted curing, the particles can form vertically aligned chains. Those chains provide a directionally enhanced path for magnetic flux, helping the planar sensor respond to the z-axis field.
Why particle alignment involves a trade-off
The study compares guides with randomly dispersed particles and guides with chain-aligned particles. Random configurations are described as essentially hysteresis-free, while chain alignment improves flux redirection and z-axis sensitivity but introduces a small residual hysteresis. Hysteresis means the response depends somewhat on the magnetic history of the material, a consideration for precision sensing.

The figures for the aligned configuration are reported by Jeon and colleagues in the 2026 paper abstract. They describe the researchers’ configuration, not a universal performance guarantee for other sensor designs.
How the team demonstrated force sensing
The researchers also demonstrated a force-sensing module. An elastomer holding a permanent magnet sits above the sensor; applying mechanical force changes the magnetic field that reaches it. In the reported setup, the system independently resolved normal force and shear forces along three axes. This is a laboratory demonstration of a sensing arrangement, not evidence of a finished robotic fingertip or a medical device. DGIST’s institutional record provides the article abstract.

Where motion and touch sensing could be useful
Because force can alter the field from a magnet-bearing structure, a sensor like this could support touch or force measurement when integrated with suitable mechanics. The researchers and coverage of the work also point to possible uses in motion tracking, robot joints and fingertips, robotic hands, soft robots, wearables, human-machine interfaces and medical devices. These are prospective applications, not evidence that the sensor is deployed in products or used clinically.

The results establish a laboratory approach to measuring three magnetic-field axes with a planar PHMR sensor and nanoparticle flux guide, along with a force-sensing demonstration. The sources do not establish independent validation, field trials, a retail product or a channel for purchasing the device. A figure of about 16 mW for simultaneous operation of four PHMR sensing elements appears in an Electronics For You report, but is secondary-source evidence rather than a figure independently confirmed in the primary result excerpt; it should not be treated as a verified power specification.
