HermitMQ is the Go message broker in github.com/ekhidirov/hermitmq. Its README documents three ways to get started: install a Debian package on Ubuntu or Debian (amd64), run the Docker Compose quick start, or build and run a local checkout. The available instructions are a starting point, not a complete production configuration guide.
Choose an installation path
| Path | Best suited to | Documented requirements or scope |
|---|---|---|
| Debian package | Installing the broker as a service on Ubuntu or Debian | Ubuntu or Debian on amd64; the README downloads an amd64 package. |
| Docker Compose | Trying the broker through the repository’s quick-start workflow | Clone the repository and run its Make target. The quick start says the container listens on port 9092. |
| Local development | Building and running the checkout, or trying the included producer and consumer | Go 1.25 or later, plus the repository and its Make targets. |
These are documented setup routes, not evidence that one is more suitable for production. The README excerpt does not establish broader operating-system support or production readiness.

Install the Ubuntu or Debian package
The README’s package instructions download the latest-release file named hermitmq_amd64.deb, install it with apt, and check the systemd service. Because the URL uses latest, the downloaded release can change over time; the package path is specifically for amd64.

The final command checks the service status. The cited instructions do not describe package signature verification, upgrades, rollback, or how to inspect service logs, so do not treat this short sequence as a complete package-maintenance procedure.
#1 Best Overall
- TWO PART CARBONLESS FORMS: 2-part carbonless format with a white, canary paper sequence provides an extra copy of all notes written
- SPIRAL BOUND EFFICIENCY: A neat spiral keeps your duplicates in chronological order for a permanent record of missed calls
- PROMPTS LEAD THE WAY: All the what-to-ask details are pre-printed on the page so you'll never miss critical information
- PERFECT PERFORATION: A durable perf line means your notes detach with ease while your yellow duplicates stay on the ring
- 400 SETS PER BOOK: Each book provides 400 carbonless message sets, Pack of 2
Start the Docker Compose quick start
The project README calls Compose its easiest way to run HermitMQ. From a terminal with Git and the required Docker Compose workflow available, clone the repository and start the documented stack:
git clone https://github.com/ekhidirov/hermitmq.git
cd hermitmq
make docker-up
The quick start says the container listens on port 9092 and demonstrates running a consumer and producer in separate terminal windows. When finished, stop the stack from the checkout with:
Rank #2
make docker-down
The excerpt does not explain whether the port or other defaults can be changed, nor does it establish that this quick-start configuration is appropriate for exposing a broker publicly.
Run from source for local development
The README states that local development requires Go 1.25 or later. From a terminal with Git and that Go version installed, clone the project and follow its documented commands:
git clone https://github.com/ekhidirov/hermitmq.gitcd hermitmqgo mod tidy- Optionally run the documented test target:
make test. - Start the broker with
make run.
The repository also includes example clients. In separate terminal windows, the README shows these commands:
go run cmd/consumer/main.go
go run cmd/producer/main.go
This producer-and-consumer demonstration is a basic smoke test. It is not evidence of production readiness or a capacity test.
Rank #4
- Spiral-bound book provides a permanent record of every call received or long-distance call made
- Designed for medium to large size businesses
- 2-part carbonless (white, canary paper sequence)
- 4 messages per page
- 400 sets per book
What configuration is—and is not—documented
The available README material describes initial launch paths but does not provide a complete configuration reference. It does not establish configuration-file names, environment variables, listener settings, persistence-directory options, authentication or authorization controls, TLS settings, backup and restore procedures, or service-hardening steps. In particular, the quick-start mention of port 9092 does not by itself explain how to configure or secure a deployment.
Recommended Free Tools
HermitMQ’s documentation describes a topic-partition model, with partitions mapped to physical .wal and .idx files under a hermitmq-data directory. It also describes at-least-once delivery and durable consumer offsets in a specially compacted __consumer_offsets topic. Those are project documentation claims; the excerpt does not explain tuning, recovery, or operational procedures for these mechanisms.
How to read the project’s performance figures
The HermitMQ README reports the figures below in its 2026 project documentation. They are project-reported results, not independently reproduced guarantees. Its excerpt identifies Apple M1 hardware and local runs of make stress-consumer and make stress-producer for the throughput claim, but does not give a full workload definition, repeated-run distribution, or independent comparison.
| Project-reported figure | Context given by the README |
|---|---|
| 3,452 MB/s (about 3.4 GB/s) maximum throughput | README attributes the benchmark hardware to an Apple M1 and says it was tested locally with make stress-consumer and make stress-producer. |
| About 2,000,000 messages per second | Reported using a 100-message batching strategy. |
| 1,000,000 messages in 335 ms | Reported with 10 concurrent producers. |
| 2 allocations per operation | Reported by the project; the excerpt gives no further workload or measurement details. |
These figures are not directly comparable with results from other brokers without matching hardware, workload, methodology, and measurement conditions.
Quick Recap
Practical choice
- For a quick trial using the repository’s documented workflow, use Docker Compose.
- For code changes and a local run, use the Go 1.25-or-later development path.
- For a package-based service on Ubuntu or Debian amd64, follow the .deb instructions and verify the systemd service status.
