A superconducting-circuit device can join small groups of microwave photons into larger, reconfigurable entangled states. In a demonstration reported on 9 October 2026, researchers used this approach to create genuine multipartite entanglement across 13 photonic qubits. It is a laboratory method for generating quantum states—not a 13-qubit general-purpose computer or a working quantum-network service.

What the superconducting circuit does

The method connects small, on-demand cluster states—groups of photons prepared with a particular pattern of quantum correlations—into larger photonic graph states. A graph state represents those correlations as links between quantum systems. Changing which links are made lets researchers reconfigure the resulting state.

The Nature Physics paper, “Deterministic and programmable fusion for the scalable generation of photonic graph states”, published on 30 September 2026, describes a superconducting-circuit device with built-in error mitigation. Its abstract presents a method for connecting small, on-demand, time-bin-encoded cluster states into larger graph states.

How photon fusion works

In the mechanism described by Phys.org, the circuit performs a quantum non-demolition parity measurement on selected photon pairs. A parity measurement reveals a property of the pair without destroying the photons. The result can link the two smaller graph states, effectively fusing them into a larger entangled state. Frequency tuning selects which photons undergo the operation.

The report characterizes the fusion as deterministic and programmable: the operation is designed to produce the connection when selected, rather than relying on a successful outcome from a probabilistic attempt. “Our main contribution is a fusion operation that is deterministic, programmable and nondestructive,” co-senior author Hongyi Zhang told Phys.org.

What the 13-photon result means

Phys.org reported that the experiment demonstrated genuine multipartite entanglement across 13 photonic qubits. These are photonic quantum systems in the generated state; the figure does not mean the team built a 13-qubit general-purpose processor. The report and journal abstract establish neither fault-tolerant computation nor quantum advantage.

Why graph states matter—and what remains unproven

Photonic graph states are studied as resources for measurement-based quantum computing and quantum communication. The report also identifies quantum error correction as a possible future relevance. These are motivations for the work, not applications demonstrated by this experiment: the available accounts do not establish a deployed network, operational error correction, or a practical scaling advantage.

The Phys.org account says the team’s next steps include improving device fidelity, photon-generation efficiency, and detector performance, as well as developing multiple detectors to enable more fusion operations and larger, higher-dimensional graph states. Those targets underscore that further engineering is needed; the experiment does not show that large-scale generation has already been achieved.

How this differs from probabilistic fusion

The Phys.org report says conventional fusion methods are probabilistic and may require repeated attempts or additional equipment. The reported approach instead uses nondestructive parity measurement and frequency selection to make the fusion operation programmable and deterministic. The available sources do not provide a direct quantitative comparison, so they do not establish a measured performance advantage or a specific reduction in hardware overhead.
