Don’t start the player automatically: check availability, expected workload, remaining games, your league’s scoring and lineup rules, and the best alternative for that roster spot.
What changes when a star returns?
There are two effects to weigh: the returning player may become available to score for your team, and the rotation may shift as the player resumes a role. A teammate who gained minutes or offensive responsibility during the absence may lose some of that opportunity. NBA.com’s fantasy guide identifies role and opportunity as important considerations and notes that injuries or coaching changes can create waiver opportunities. Reassess those temporary roles when the rotation changes; do not assume a fill-in’s earlier value will continue unchanged.

How to decide whether to start the returning player
- Check availability close to lineup lock. Use the player’s current official status for the game or scoring period. A reported return date is not the same as confirmation that the player is available.
- Look for workload information. Check reliable reporting for a minutes restriction, a missed back-to-back, or another limitation. Availability does not establish a full workload, and there is no universal first-game minutes ramp or performance level for returning stars.
- Count the games that remain. Consider how many games the player can contribute during your scoring period and when they occur. A return with only one game left may have a different lineup value from a return early in the period.
- Apply your league’s scoring rules. A player’s value depends on what your format rewards, whether categories, points, high score, or another system. Compare the returning player with alternatives using your league’s actual scoring.
- Reassess affected teammates. Consider who may lose minutes or usage as the star returns. Compare those players and the best waiver option against the returning player for the specific slot you need to fill.
- Account for lineup and roster rules. Daily changes let you respond as news develops; a weekly lock can make one uncertain game affect a longer period. Check whether an injured-reserve slot or transaction limit changes the cost of holding the player.
Daily and weekly lineups change the decision
In a daily-lineup league, you may be able to adjust closer to tipoff as availability information becomes clearer. In a weekly-lineup league, a midweek absence or uncertain workload can affect the value of the player for the whole locked period. Check your league’s lock timing before choosing between the returning player and a more reliable alternative.
How injured-player slots affect your roster
An injured-reserve slot can let you hold an injured player while adding a replacement, but platform rules differ. Yahoo’s basketball IL and IL+ guidance says a fantasy player may remain in those slots after returning to real-life play. Check your platform’s eligibility rules before making a roster move; do not assume another service handles returning players the same way.

Medical clearance is not a fantasy timetable
The NBA’s 2025–26 Concussion Policy Summary states that a player diagnosed with a concussion cannot return to full participation without restrictions for at least 48 hours after the injury and until completing the required return-to-participation process. This rule applies to concussion cases; it does not predict a fantasy player’s return date, minutes, or production for other injuries.

In its December 29, 2025 Week 11 guide, NBA.com reported that Stephon Castle averaged 20.6 points, 6.0 assists, and 4.1 rebounds since returning from injury on December 8. That is a dated report about one player and period, not a benchmark for what another star will produce after returning. Use current availability and role information for the player you are deciding on.
