A self-optimising microreactor system runs a reaction, measures its output, and uses that result to choose conditions for the next run. The cycle—set conditions, react, measure, adjust—automates experimental iteration. Researchers still define the chemistry and what counts as success; the system does not independently know the desired product or guarantee a universal optimum.
How the feedback loop works
A typical platform links a flow reactor to an analytical instrument and a computer-controlled optimisation procedure. The pumps deliver reactants, the reactor carries out the chemistry, and an online or inline measurement estimates an outcome such as product yield or concentration. The software then selects conditions for another experiment based on the measurements collected so far.

- Set conditions: Pumps and other controls establish variables such as flow rate, temperature, and reactant concentration.
- Run the reaction: The feed passes through a mixer and a microreactor.
- Measure the result: An analytical instrument measures a response, such as product yield or outlet concentration.
- Choose the next experiment: An optimisation method uses the result to select new operating conditions, and the cycle repeats.
The system is only as useful as its objective and measurements. “Optimal” might mean maximising yield or production, reducing cost, or balancing multiple goals. A setup tuned to one objective may not be best for another.
What equipment does the system need?
Historical 2010 demonstration
A 2010 Chemistry World report described an MIT research team’s setup with three syringe pumps feeding reaction components into a mixer and a 140 μl microreactor. High-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) measured product yield, and a computer adjusted flow rate, temperature, reactant concentration, and related settings between cycles. These are details of that demonstration, not specifications that every microreactor must follow. Chemistry World’s 2010 report

Later platform with inline FT-IR
Fath, Kockmann, Otto, and Röder’s 2020 study paired an automated flow microreactor with inline Fourier-transform infrared (FT-IR) spectroscopy. Its measurement fed directly into the optimisation procedure. This illustrates a different way to obtain feedback; the choice of analytical method depends on the reaction and the measurement needed. Fath et al., 2020
In practical terms, the cited work shows equipment categories—feed pumps, a mixer, a microreactor, analytics, and automation—not a ready-made consumer kit. It does not specify a current pump model or establish flow-rate, pressure, materials, or connection requirements for a new application.

How optimisation approaches differ
Algorithms are not interchangeable: they can target different questions and trade-offs. The 2020 study compared a modified simplex algorithm with model-free design of experiments (DoE) for finding reaction conditions. Waldron et al.’s 2019 platform instead used model-based DoE to choose experiments for identifying kinetic models. These approaches answer different questions, so the cited studies do not establish one as universally best.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors| Approach and study | Primary objective | Measurement in the cited example | Reported campaign time or trade-off |
|---|---|---|---|
| Modified simplex; Fath et al. (2020) | Find conditions for the studied optimisation problems; the paper also considers multivariate and multi-objective optimisation. | Inline FT-IR. | The authors report solving their investigated optimisation problems within one working day. |
| Model-free DoE; Fath et al. (2020) | Find conditions for the studied optimisation problems without a kinetic model. | Inline FT-IR. | The authors report solving their investigated optimisation problems within one working day. |
| Model-based DoE; Waldron et al. (2019) | Identify kinetic models and estimate kinetic parameters. | HPLC measured outlet concentrations. | In the reported case, transient experiments took two hours versus eight hours for a steady-state campaign, but produced less precise parameter estimates. |
The durations and trade-offs in this table describe those studies, not expected runtimes for other reactions. A faster campaign may be worthwhile when speed matters more than parameter precision; when precise kinetic estimates are the goal, the reported transient approach involved a precision trade-off.

What the published results do—and do not—show
The 83% yield result
The 2010 Chemistry World report says the MIT team’s demonstrated reaction reached an 83% product yield after two days and multiple cycles. That figure belongs to that reaction and apparatus; it is not a general benchmark for self-optimising microreactors. The report is a science-news account of the demonstration, rather than the underlying paper. Chemistry World’s 2010 report
Results from the 2020 study
Fath and colleagues say the optimisation problems they investigated were solved within one working day. They also describe their platform as able to respond to process disturbances and collect kinetic data during optimisation. Those are results and capabilities reported for their platform and scenarios, not a runtime or disturbance-handling guarantee for every system. The authors conclude: “The derived autonomous platform enables multi-variate and multi-objective optimisations in real-time, constituting a modular and flexible system with high efficiency and of considerable industrial relevance.” This is the authors’ conclusion, not an independent assessment. The two-hour versus eight-hour comparison
Waldron et al. report that their transient-experiment campaign took two hours, compared with eight hours for their steady-state campaign, while yielding less precise parameter estimates in the studied case. This is a comparison for kinetic-model identification, not a measure of how quickly a different platform will optimise product yield. Waldron et al., 2019
What to consider when choosing a setup
- Define the objective: Decide whether you need to improve yield, production, cost, or a combination of outcomes.
- Match the measurement to the question: The cited examples use HPLC for yield or outlet-concentration measurements and inline FT-IR for feedback during optimisation.
- Choose the experimental strategy for the task: Condition-finding and kinetic-parameter estimation are distinct goals, with different methods and trade-offs.
- Check the physical requirements: Select pumps, reactor, analytical equipment, and connections to suit the actual flow rates, pressures, materials, and chemistry.
- Plan for disturbances and constraints: Automation may be designed to respond to changing process conditions, but capability depends on the platform and its control strategy.
The 2010 example confirms that syringe pumps can feed a microreactor, but it does not identify a current retail model or specify the requirements for another experiment. The cited studies likewise do not establish consumer availability for a complete reactor, analytics, and automation system.
