A colour-changing coating could provide a visible warning that a coated fiber has been exposed to high heat, but the technology described by Empa in 2021 was a research prototype—not an established climbing-rope inspection product. Its signal addresses heat exposure, not every cause of rope damage, and the researchers reported a durability problem that could disable it.
What the coating is designed to show
The reported indicator responds to heat. Empa researchers coated PET (polyester) and Vectran fibers with a multilayer structure applied by sputtering. A silver layer reflects light, titanium nitrogen oxide helps stabilize the silver, and a 20-nanometer layer of amorphous germanium-antimony-telluride (GST) sits on top. When heated, the GST crystallizes, changing optical interference so the coated fiber’s apparent color shifts from blue to white.

That color change is a possible visual warning of prior high-temperature exposure. It is not a general-purpose detector for abrasion, cuts, chemical exposure, UV damage, stitching failures, or other kinds of deterioration. The mechanism and proposed uses are described in Empa’s January 5, 2021 release, “When damaged ropes change color”.
Does it have one temperature threshold?
No. Empa reported that the response could be tailored from 100 to 400 degrees Celsius, depending on the coating composition and fiber type. That is an adjustable research range, not a single rating that applies to every coated fiber or rope. The release does not provide a universal threshold for a climbing rope.

Is it available or certified for climbing ropes?
The 2021 release described self-diagnosing ropes for firefighters, mountaineers, and lifting applications as possible future uses. It said the research was incomplete and the team was seeking industry partners. Those proposed applications do not establish that a commercial rope using the coating exists, or that one has been certified for climbing or lifting safety.
The available sources do not establish whether the technology was commercialized after that release. They also do not provide independent field-performance results, a current product standard, or certification status. The coating should therefore be understood as a research concept, not as a substitute for an equipment maker’s instructions or established inspection procedures.

Why the warning may not last
Empa reported that the phase-change materials oxidized over a period of a few months. Once oxidized, the layer would no longer crystallize in response to heat, so it would lose its warning function. Dr. Dirk Hegemann of Empa’s Advanced Fibers lab said: “Unfortunately, the phase-change materials oxidize over the course of a few months.” This reported timescale is not a validated shelf life; the release gives no service interval or field durability specification.
Should you add a coating or paint to existing rope?
No. Do not modify load-bearing synthetic equipment with an unapproved coating, marker, or paint to try to make damage easier to see. Transport for NSW’s guidance for synthetic slings says marker or paint pen is a reason for immediate discard, and lists heat damage, chemical damage, torn stitching, and UV discoloration among discard criteria. That guidance applies to synthetic slings in its jurisdiction; it is not a universal rule for every climbing rope or location. What this means for rope users
A heat-responsive coating is a promising idea for making some thermal exposure visible, but the reported prototype does not answer the broader question of whether a rope is safe to use. Until a product’s intended use, durability, performance, and certification are established, treat the color-changing approach as research—not an inspection method. Use the rope or equipment manufacturer’s inspection guidance and remove equipment from service when its instructions or applicable rules require it.
