Yes—a Kelvin water dropper has been miniaturised into a microfluidic device. Instead of two gravity-fed streams, the research prototype uses tiny droplet generators and electrodes to build up charge as droplets form and separate. Researchers demonstrated droplet charging and breakup in 2013, then used a later version to move liquid by electrowetting. These are high-voltage, low-current devices, not general-purpose power supplies.
How does a microfluidic Kelvin water dropper work?
A classical Kelvin water dropper uses two streams of falling water, two interconnected containers and induction electrodes. Charge on one side reinforces charge separation on the other: as water separates into droplets, the droplets carry charge that helps intensify the electric field and charge the opposite stream.

The chip-scale version keeps the same induction principle but replaces the falling streams with microfluidic droplet generators and integrated electrodes. Pneumatic pressure drives liquid through the small channels; as droplets form and pass the electrodes, they acquire charge. The electric field can also destabilise the droplets, causing them to break up through electrohydrodynamic instabilities.

What did the researchers demonstrate?
2013: charging and electrohydrodynamic breakup
The 2013 paper demonstrated that the microfluidic device could charge droplets and cause them to break up under electrohydrodynamic instabilities. The authors compared observed charge behaviour with simulations. They discussed possible uses such as converting pneumatic pressure into electrical energy and controlling droplets, capsules or cells, but those possibilities should not be confused with the demonstrated charging and breakup.

2014: a related pressure-driven ballistic design
A separate design forced water under overpressure through micropores, creating jets that broke into droplets. Electrostatic gates induced charge, and the droplets landed on metal targets where high voltage accumulated. This is a related pressure-driven energy-harvesting approach, not the same channel-and-electrode configuration as the 2013 microfluidic dropper.

2018: electrowetting
A 2018 study built and characterised microfluidic Kelvin water droppers, varying channel diameters and flow rates. The team used its best-performing device to demonstrate electrowetting—changing how liquid spreads on a dielectric surface by applying an electric field. The paper also developed an analytical model and reported that it matched observed liquid deformation.

How do the three designs differ?
| Study | Drive and geometry | Reported behaviour or output | Demonstrated endpoint |
|---|---|---|---|
| 2013 microfluidic dropper | Microfluidic droplet generators with integrated electrodes; pneumatic driving is described by the authors. | Several-picolitre droplets at a typical rate around 103 droplets per second, as reported for the prototype. A contemporary secondary report gives current on the order of 0.5 nA. | Droplet charging and electrohydrodynamic breakup. |
| 2014 ballistic derivative | Overpressure forces water through micropores to form jets and droplets; electrostatic gates induce charge. | Metal targets accumulate high voltage. The strongest demonstrated use beyond generating charge is electrowetting: electrically changing liquid behaviour on a dielectric surface. That points to potential microfluidic control applications, while the 2013 authors also discussed possible use in controlling droplets, capsules or cells. Those broader applications are proposals, not established outcomes of the cited demonstrations.

Kelvin droppers produce high voltage but very little current. The 2013 prototype’s reported current, around 0.5 nA in a contemporary secondary account, illustrates why this technology is better suited to high-voltage, low-current tasks than to powering ordinary electronics. It should not be treated as a practical general-purpose power source.
Is there a commercial chip or classroom kit?
The cited papers describe research devices built and tested by their authors. They do not establish a standard commercial microfluidic Kelvin water dropper, a currently available classroom kit or a ready-to-use product specification. A research chip’s performance depends on its geometry, flow and operating conditions, so the published prototype figures cannot be assumed for an unspecified product.
